York St Nicholas Fayre & Historic Harrogate

From a morning pickup in your local area, we travel to the annual St Nicholas Fayre in York, one of the most popular festive markets in the country. Like stepping into a scene from a Dickens’ tale, the lively Victorian market stalls sell everything from local produce to traditional gifts and crafts. Treat yourself to delicious food, fresh from the farmers’ market, or indulge in a cup of warming mulled wine. Later on, we continue to the hotel for check in and our overnight stay.

York St Nicholas Fayre & Historic Harrogate

After breakfast at the hotel, we head to the elegant Victorian spa town of Harrogate, located in the heart of scenic Yorkshire and full of festive cheer. Notable sights include the Royal Pump Room and the Grade II listed Royal Hall, and don’t miss the attractive Montpellier Quarter with its pedestrianised streets lined with 19th-century buildings. A festive treat in the iconic Bettys Tea Room is a must too! Afterwards, we re-join the coach for our return journey home.

On day 2, after breakfast, travel to elegant Harrogate, where you’ll enjoy an unhurried visit to the spa town’s highlights. Your driver will point out the Royal Pump Room and the Grade II listed Royal Hall en route before you stroll the Montpellier Quarter with its handsome 19th-century facades, boutiques and galleries. Seasonal decorations and the aroma of roasted coffee and winter spices set a convivial tone.

Harrogate flourished on the fame of its sulphur springs in the 18th and 19th centuries, drawing visitors to take the waters and promenade through parks like the Valley Gardens. Use your free time to soak in the spa-town atmosphere, admire ornate shopfronts and perhaps step into a cosy café, before we re-join the coach for the homeward journey.

Following your time at the market on day 1, continue to a comfortable JG3/JG4-standard hotel for an overnight stay. Check in, unwind in the lounge or bar, and enjoy a free evening to relax at your own pace. The hotel’s welcoming spaces provide a calm counterpoint to the bustle of the festive streets.

Morning begins with a hearty breakfast in the hotel restaurant, from hot dishes to lighter continental choices, setting you up for the day’s visit to Harrogate. It’s a simple, well-earned pause in the journey that adds comfort and ease to the short festive escape.

On day 2 in Harrogate, treat yourself to festive afternoon tea at Bettys Tea Room, an icon of Yorkshire hospitality. Settle into refined, art-deco surroundings as tiers arrive with delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream, and jewel-like pastries, all paired with Bettys’ signature blends or rich hot chocolate.

Founded in 1919 by Swiss confectioner Frederick Belmont, Bettys blends continental craft with Yorkshire warmth. It’s a cherished ritual that captures the town’s genteel pace. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour (subject to local availability); your Tour Team can advise on timings and the best way to make the most of your visit.

During your free time on day 1, you may step inside York Minster, one of Europe’s great Gothic cathedrals. Walk beneath the soaring nave, study the medieval artistry of the Great East Window, and listen for the hush of the echoing cathedral nave. If time and conditions allow, you can climb the Central Tower for skyline views across the city walls and snaking lanes.

The Minster’s intricate stonework and stained glass tell stories of faith, guilds and kings, crafted by generations of medieval masons and glaziers. It’s a powerful counterpoint to the market’s bustle, a place to pause for photos and reflection. Entry and tower climb are at additional cost and bookable on tour, with timed admission subject to availability.

While in Harrogate on day 2, delve into spa-town heritage with a visit to the Royal Pump Room Museum, built beside the town’s famous sulphur springs. Exhibits reveal Victorian and Edwardian spa cures, elegant social rituals, and the fashions that made Harrogate a byword for health and refinement.

Stand by the old wellhead and imagine visitors arriving to “take the waters,” then explore displays of period costumes, advertisements and medical curiosities. It’s a compact, engaging window onto the culture that shaped the town you see today. Museum admission is at additional cost and bookable on tour, and your Tour Team can help with current opening times.

On day 1, arrive in historic York for the city’s beloved St Nicholas Fayre. Wander the festive lanes as you browse the chalet-style stalls along Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, pausing to sample spiced mulled wine, Yorkshire cheeses and handcrafted gifts. Slip down to The Shambles and the Shambles Market for seasonal treats while street musicians add a warm winter soundtrack. Enjoy time to enjoy a free afternoon exploring at your own pace.

The fair takes its name from St Nicholas, patron of gift-giving, and echoes York’s medieval trading heritage. As you stroll, glimpses of York Minster rise above the rooftops, a reminder of the city’s long story from Roman Eboracum to a medieval mercantile city. Expect glowing lights, the scent of cinnamon, and moments to pause for photos and reflection before rejoining the coach.
