Additional information

Discover Yellowstone’s cold-season ecology as you join a focused talk with a representative from Yellowstone Forever in the gateway town of Gardiner. Learn how bison, elk, wolves and smaller mammals conserve energy, move across snow and locate shelter when temperatures drop well below freezing.

Through images and discussion, explore behaviors and adaptations that keep life moving through the park’s harshest months. This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER experience directly supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land and deepens appreciation for Yellowstone’s delicate winter balance.

Explore the open valley floors and timbered slopes of Lamar Valley with a specialist naturalist, where frosted meadows and river corridors provide prime habitat for winter wildlife. Scan ridgelines and creek bottoms as you use spotting scopes to look for bison, elk, pronghorn, coyotes and, with luck, distant wolf packs.

Hear how the reintroduction of wolves reshaped grazing patterns and vegetation, restoring balance to the northern range. Engage with Yellowstone’s predator–prey dynamics in a landscape hushed by snow and punctuated by curling breath in the cold air.

Travel deep into the park aboard a specially equipped vehicle as you travel by over-snow coach to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Step out at rim viewpoints where the river cuts through volcanic rock, and watch the Lower Falls plume of mist lift into frigid air as you pause for photos and reflection.

Hear how geothermal heat mingles with sub-zero temperatures to rim the canyon with ice. Learn about the Yellowstone Caldera’s geology and how steam, frost and light transform this dramatic gorge into a stark winter tableau.

Walk carefully maintained paths to watch Old Faithful propel a white column into the cold sky, then follow the Upper Geyser Basin boardwalks past steaming pools, sinter cones and hissing vents. Feel the contrast as steam rises into sub-zero air while you stay on designated routes through this fragile geothermal ground.

Gain insight into the plumbing beneath the basin and how silica-rich waters build cones and terraces. In winter, the basin’s colors sharpen against snow, and sound carries—geysers roar and crackle in the crisp stillness.

Visit the cascading Mammoth Hot Springs terraces, where mineral-rich water sculpts travertine into steps and ledges. Wander viewpoints near formations such as Minerva Terrace, watching rising steam in sub-zero air drift across a palette of ochres and whites set against dark lodgepole pines.

Understand how hot water dissolves limestone below ground and deposits it at the surface, building fluid architecture that shifts month to month. In winter, these living sculptures feel otherworldly—quiet, warm-toned and laced with delicate ice fringes.

Choose your pace around Old Faithful: strap on snowshoes for a gentle exploration, follow groomed cross-country ski trails through forest openings, or stay cozy indoors to enjoy hot chocolate by the fire. Each option reveals a different side of the geyser basin’s winter character.

Routes follow established corridors near thermal features and open glades where heat shapes snowpack and air. Whether you snowshoe Old Faithful at an easy rhythm or watch flakes sift past lodge windows, the basin’s quiet intensifies the sense of place.

Settle into Montana hospitality as you meet your Travel Director and small group for a relaxed welcome dinner in downtown Bozeman. Trade first impressions of snowy ridgelines and rivers while sampling regional flavors shaped by ranching country and Rocky Mountain seasons.

Bozeman’s rail-era heritage and contemporary food scene combine in warm, wood-accented spaces. This convivial start helps establish the easy, small-group rhythm that will carry through your days exploring Yellowstone’s winter landscapes.

Gather one final time for a final dinner in Bozeman, raising a glass to shared moments from Lamar Valley to Old Faithful. Swap stories of steam-clouded boardwalks, quiet forests and wide, white meadows as the journey’s highlights take shape in conversation.

The evening celebrates camaraderie forged in the cold clarity of Yellowstone’s winter. Local Montana flavors and friendly service provide a fitting close before journeys home.
