Trafalgar

Meet your fellow travellers and Driver Guide over dinner at Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi. This hosted gathering offers a chance to get acquainted with your small group while sharing a meal in one of the city’s best-known dining venues.

Carnivore is known for its charcoal-roasted meats, served in a lively, informal setting. The evening brings everyone together before the wildlife experiences across Kenya begin.

Visit a working coffee and tea estate in Kerugoya, on the foothills of Mount Kenya. During this locally hosted Be My Guest experience, learn how the crops are grown and processed, then taste estate-grown tea and coffee alongside local cuisine.

The family home dates from 1962 and belonged to Geoffrey Kariithi, who served in Kenya’s first independence government. Its setting connects the region’s agricultural traditions with a personal chapter of modern Kenyan history.

Watch wildlife from The Ark Lodge in Aberdare National Park, where four viewing areas overlook a floodlit waterhole and salt lick. Look for animals arriving to drink and observe the birdlife around the lodge.

Inspired by the shape of Noah’s Ark, this lodge makes wildlife observation part of the stay. The viewing areas offer a different perspective from a game drive: a place to settle in and see what emerges from the surrounding forest.

Explore Samburu National Reserve by 4×4 on game drives through acacia woodland, open grassland and the country beside the Ewaso Nyiro River. Search for wildlife with your Driver Guide, including members of the ‘Samburu Special Five’, such as Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe.

Samburu’s dry northern landscape differs markedly from Kenya’s greener highlands. Morning and late-afternoon drives offer changing light and fresh opportunities to observe animals moving through the reserve.

Walk with a local ranger along the edge of Samburu National Reserve, following a trail towards the meeting of the Ewaso Nyiro and Isiolo rivers. Learn to notice the plants, tracks and smaller signs of life that are easy to miss from a vehicle.

In this dry landscape, river water supports wildlife along the banks. Keep watch for birds, antelopes and crocodiles while your ranger explains how the waterways shape the surrounding habitat.

Visit Ol Pejeta Conservancy to learn about its anti-poaching work and the protection of endangered species. Discover why this not-for-profit reserve is a significant sanctuary for black rhinos, and see the landscape in which its conservation teams work.

This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® experience places wildlife viewing in a wider context: the continuing effort needed to protect animals and their habitat. The visit supports the conservancy’s work and the goal of safeguarding life on land.

Visit Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary within Ol Pejeta Conservancy to see its resident orphaned and rescued chimpanzees. Observe these social animals and learn why they require a protected home.

The sanctuary offers a distinct conservation encounter within a safari region better known for its rhinos and other large mammals. Seeing the chimpanzees brings attention to the needs of animals rescued from difficult circumstances and the care involved in providing refuge.

View Thomson’s Falls at Nyahururu, where the Ewaso Narok River drops into a wooded gorge. Pause at the viewpoint to take photographs and hear the rush of water against the valley walls.

The falls offer a striking change of scenery among Kenya’s safari landscapes. Mist rising from the gorge and the steep green slopes make this a worthwhile named landmark stop rather than a routine break in the journey.

Join an afternoon game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park, scanning the lakeshore for birds and the surrounding habitat for lions and leopards. Flamingos may be seen at the water’s edge, although their numbers vary with conditions.

Set in Kenya’s Rift Valley, the park brings lake, woodland and grassland into one wildlife-viewing area. Its birdlife is a particular draw, while a guided drive helps you look beyond the shoreline for animals sheltering in the vegetation.

Explore the Maasai Mara by 4×4 on morning and afternoon game drives across its plains and rolling hills. Search for the Big Five with your Driver Guide, and visit your lodge’s watering hole, where pods of hippos can often be seen.

The Mara’s broad horizons make it possible to observe wildlife moving through a landscape of grassland and scattered trees. Each drive offers a different view of the reserve; sightings depend on where the animals roam.

Visit a Maasai village in the Maasai Mara region for a guided introduction to community life. Meet local people, see a demonstration of the warriors’ jumping dance and try traditional bush hunting skills.

The encounter offers an opportunity to learn directly from your hosts about daily practices and traditions. It adds a human perspective to time spent in the reserve, connecting the landscape with a community whose heritage is closely associated with the Mara.

Explore UNESCO-listed Stone Town with a Local Specialist, walking its narrow lanes past intricately carved Zanzibar doors. Visit sites identified on the tour, including the former slave market, the House of Wonders, the Sultan’s Palace Museum and the Old Arab Fort.

The historic centre reflects centuries of trade and cultural exchange along the Swahili coast. Its buildings and public spaces also hold difficult histories, making a locally guided walk a meaningful way to understand Zanzibar beyond its beaches.

Tour a Zanzibar shamba, or spice farm, with a local guide. Smell and taste spices, herbs and fruits while learning how they are cultivated and used in island cooking and everyday life.

Zanzibar’s reputation as the ‘Spice Island’ grew from a long history of cultivation and Indian Ocean trade. Experiencing the plants where they grow gives that history a tangible dimension, from the scent of leaves and bark to the flavours associated with the island.

Sail aboard a traditional dhow on a full-day cruise from a Zanzibar fishing village. Pause at a sandbank to swim or snorkel in the Indian Ocean, using the equipment provided, and look for colourful fish beneath the surface.

A traditional Zanzibar seafood lunch is part of the outing, pairing time on the water with local flavours. This Optional Experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; sea conditions and wildlife sightings may vary.
