Spend a day on safari in Hluhluwe National Park, Africa’s oldest proclaimed reserve (1895). Traverse rolling hills and riverine valleys in search of the Big Five, with particular focus on the park’s celebrated white rhinos.

Hear the story of Operation Rhino and how dedicated conservation reversed a species’ decline. Cheetah on ridgelines, giraffe among fever trees, and raptors riding thermals add to a rich, ever-changing wildlife tableau.

Cruise Lake St Lucia within the UNESCO World Heritage–listed iSimangaliso Wetland Park, gliding past reed beds and mangroves alive with birdlife. Watch pods of hippos and crocodiles as African fish eagles call overhead.

Guides explain the estuary’s shifting sandbars, seasonal salinity, and its role as a nursery for countless species. Calm waters and close-up wildlife viewing reveal the quiet intricacies of this exceptional protected ecosystem.

Stop along storied Route 62 for a guided Cape Brandy tasting that charts the spirit’s origins in the 17th century. Explore grape selection, pot-still technique, and barrel maturation that produce amber complexity.

Swirl glasses to release heady aromas of dried fruit and oak, then sip to appreciate balance and length. This convivial tasting illuminates a South African classic with deep roots in Winelands craft and culture.

Tour a working ostrich farm in the Klein Karoo by tractor-trailer, learning how these remarkable birds are raised for feathers, leather, and meat. Meet different breeds, including South African Black, Zimbabwean Blue, and Kenyan (Maasai) ostrich.

Visit the hatchery to see giant eggs and downy chicks, and hear how the boom-and-bust feather trade shaped Oudtshoorn’s fortunes. This hands-on experience blends quirky encounters with agricultural heritage under vast Karoo skies.

Follow a shaded path in Tsitsikamma National Park to the famed Big Tree, an ancient Outeniqua yellowwood towering above a cathedral of indigenous forest. Ferns, mosses, and bird calls accompany this gentle, soul-stilling stroll.

Interpretive boards explain the Afromontane ecosystem and the tree’s estimated 800-year lifespan. The cool, dappled light and resinous scents make a contemplative counterpoint to the coast’s dramatic cliffs and surf.

Explore Storms River Mouth, where dark waters meet the Indian Ocean beneath steep, forested cliffs. Walk wooden pathways to cliffside viewpoints and listen to thundering breakers surge over black rock.

The scene reveals the Garden Route at its most elemental—restless seas, wind-bent fynbos, and circling seabirds. Keep a camera ready for swirling foam patterns, rugged headlands, and shafts of light cutting through spray.

Set out in open 4x4s for a sunset game drive in Addo Elephant National Park, when golden light washes over spekboom thickets and open plains. Scan for elephant herds, buffalo silhouettes, and prowling predators.

Pause at a scenic spot to clink sundowner drinks as dusk deepens and the bush chorus swells. Guides interpret tracks, behaviors, and ecology in a park founded in 1931 to protect its last elephants—now a thriving population.

Rise early for a dawn game drive when cool air and soft light heighten wildlife activity. Follow fresh lion and hyena tracks while elephants fan out to feed among aromatic Portulacaria afra (spekboom) thickets.

Birdsong carries over amber grass as kudu, zebra, and warthog emerge onto sun-warmed clearings. Guides share insights into Addo’s mosaic of habitats and the fine balance that sustains the Big Five.

Head out again for an afternoon game drive that capitalizes on lengthening shadows and cooling temperatures. Settle in for waterhole vigils as elephants rumble in to drink and buffalo churn the shallows.

With guides tuned to seasonal movements and recent sightings, your chances of encounters rise across varied terrain—from open savannah to dense thicket. Each loop reveals different dramas unfolding in Addo’s wild theatre.

Embark on a guided whale-watching cruise to seek southern right whales in Walker Bay (typically June–October). Skippers position respectfully for natural encounters—blows, breaching and tail-slapping—with interpretive commentary on migration and behavior.

Outside peak season, a marine safari focuses on dolphins, seals, and coastal birds. This is an optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour; departures are weather-dependent for safety and sighting quality.

Trace South Africa’s recent past on a powerful city journey: view Mandela’s statue at City Hall, explore the District Six Museum, and meet artisans in community hubs before visiting Langa Township with a local guide.

In the afternoon, ferry to Robben Island to reflect on imprisonment and resilience within sight of Table Mountain. This is an optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour; the ferry is weather-dependent.

Join an evening of rhythm and flavor beginning with interactive djembe drumming, led by master percussionists. Settle in for a 14-dish pan-African tasting menu served sharing-style, with aromas of berbere, peri-peri, and Cape Malay spice.

Between courses, performers weave storytelling and dance through the dining room, celebrating the continent’s diversity. This is an optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour.

Explore the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on a guided walk across immaculate lawns and fynbos beds hugging the slopes of Table Mountain. Stroll shaded paths alive with proteas, ericas, and cycads, framed by dramatic sandstone buttresses.

Ascend to the historic Cape Point lighthouse for far-reaching views where powerful ocean currents churn below. Pause for photos and reflection as the peninsula’s dramatic geology and maritime lore unfold around you.

Wander the oak-shaded streets of Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second-oldest town. Admire whitewashed Cape Dutch gables, graceful churches, and handsome university buildings that speak to three centuries of Winelands history and scholarship.

With cafés spilling onto pavements and galleries tucked into gracious homesteads, the town blends academic energy with pastoral charm. Your walk highlights architectural details, local craftsmanship, and the valley setting that has nurtured viticulture since the 1600s.

Step into vaulted cellars at historic Blaauwklippen Wine Estate for a guided look at barrel rooms and blending traditions. Learn how soils, slopes, and climate shape the character of the Cape terroir across classic and contemporary cultivars.

Conclude with a curated cellar tour and tasting, comparing styles and vintages while surrounded by mountain vistas and manicured vines. Notes of fynbos, stone fruit, and spice bring the Winelands to life in the glass.

Visit the Stony Point Nature Reserve at Betty’s Bay, one of the world’s largest breeding sites for African penguins. Follow a raised boardwalk skirting wave-lashed rocks to watch bustling colonies waddle, preen, and plunge into foaming surf.

Interpretive signs reveal the reserve’s fragile ecology and the area’s past as an old whaling station. Cormorants nest on kelp-draped outcrops, while the scent of salt and sea spray fills the air along this protected shoreline.

Walk sections of the renowned Hermanus Cliff Path, tracing sandstone bluffs and pocket beaches with turquoise water below. In season, it’s famed for land-based whale watching as southern rights cruise close to shore.

Pause at viewpoints to scan the horizon, breathe the salt-tinged air, and admire fynbos clinging to the cliffs. Cafés, craft studios, and oceanfront promenades lend the town a leisurely rhythm between sea and mountains.

Raise a glass at a hosted welcome gathering to meet your Tour Director and travelling companions. Enjoy a relaxed welcome drink as the outline of Table Mountain slips into evening light and you settle into Cape Town’s coastal rhythm.

Share first impressions, ask questions about the journey ahead, and soak in the city mood from a stylish hotel lounge. This convivial start builds camaraderie and sets the tone for South Africa’s generous hospitality throughout your tour.
