Itinerary
Whitby Regatta & Historic York
From a morning pickup in your local area we travel by coach to York, where we enjoy some free time at leisure to explore. One highlight is York Minster, the largest Gothic Cathedral north of the Alps and a spectacular masterpiece featuring stunning stained glass. Don’t miss the famous Betty’s English Tea Rooms too, plus the cobbled streets of The Shambles (Europe’s oldest shopping street) and Stonegate, with its many oak-beamed shops, pubs and cafés. Later, we check into our hotel in time for dinner.
Historic York Visit: Minster Quarter & The Shambles
Explore historic York on an included city visit, with time to wander the Minster Quarter, see the soaring towers of York Minster, stroll The Shambles and Stonegate, and trace the medieval city walls for sweeping views. Pause at Betty’s Tea Rooms or browse independent bookshops and chocolatiers near the River Ouse.
Discover layers of history from Roman Eboracum and Viking Jorvik to Georgian elegance. Look for intricate stained glass, guild halls and timber-framed fronts, and pause for photos and reflection beneath the cathedral’s shadow.
Whitby Regatta Day on the North Sea Coast
Experience the Whitby Regatta on an included coastal excursion, as rowing crews slice across the harbour. Take in views from West Cliff and harbour piers, sample classic fish and chips, and enjoy the carnival atmosphere of fairground rides and vintage car displays.
Set in a town shaped by whaling, jet carving and Captain Cook’s voyages, this is among Britain’s oldest sea regattas, documented since at least the 1840s. Climb the 199 Steps to St Mary’s Church and look toward Whitby Abbey, or stay waterside for a fireworks finale if scheduled.
