Day 6
Lake Bohinj and Savica Waterfall
The obvious introductory walk to the Bohinj area and one which should not be missed. This is a simple walk on level, mostly good paths but with short sections of tree roots and rocks towards the far end of the north (better) shore. It can be combined with the Savica Waterfall route and – particularly if that combination should prove too long – you can return from Ukanc by bus or boat. To add to the variety, swimmers may indulge themselves as the lake’s waters are warm in summer.

Additional information
Lake Bohinj Circuit & Savica Waterfall
On day 6, trace the shoreline of Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest glacial lake, where mirror-still water reflects the rocky flanks of Pršivec and Vogel. Follow the quieter north shore, weaving between roots and lakeside boulders, before continuing towards Ukanc and the stepped forest path to Slap Savica, the vaulted source of the Sava Bohinjka.
Return along the opposite shore or enjoy a free afternoon by the stone bridge and the frescoed Church of St John the Baptist in Ribcev Laz. The curve of the lake and the hush of spruce give a sense of sanctuary, while Savica’s cave-like cascade tells the geological story of Bohinj’s hidden karst beneath the Julian Alps.
Mostnica Gorge & Planina Voje Pastures
On day 7, set out from Ribcev Laz towards Stara Fužina to follow the sculpted chutes and emerald bowls of the Mostnica Gorge. Cross Devil’s Bridge and continue along the river, where water has carved whimsical curves through pale limestone, before the valley opens into the meadows of Planina Voje.
Alpine huts and hayracks frame views back to Triglav’s ramparts as you stroll to a shaded waterfall at the head of the valley. This gentle ascent reveals Bohinj’s pastoral heritage — summer pasturing, wooden granaries and the slow pace of mountain life — before you return through forest with the river’s echo as your companion.
Scenic Hop on the Historic Bohinj Railway
On day 5, your route can include a short segment on the Bohinj Railway, the 1906 Habsburg-era line linking Gorizia with Jesenice via stone viaducts and the long Bohinj tunnel. Settle by the window for a swift traverse beneath Jelovica forests and river valleys, connecting the Soca region with Bohinj.
This atmospheric ride adds a dash of rail heritage and a pause for photos and reflection without extra walking. The local ticket (approximately €4) is not included and is payable locally; it is an optional add-on arranged on tour and subject to timetable and operational conditions.
Plužna Village, Virje Waterfall & Glijun Spring
On day 3, ascend into the foothills northwest of Bovec through beech and hornbeam to the hamlet of Plužna, where wooden barns and hay meadows open to mountain views. Continue to the emerald veil of Slap Virje, a broad, moss-fringed cascade that tumbles into a clear pool — a refreshing spot to linger on warm days.
Follow the murmuring channel to the Glijun Spring, where icy water gushes from limestone cliffs at the base of Kanin. This landscape of karst, aqueducts and old pastures offers a gentle introduction to the valley’s rhythms — the scent of pine, the ring of cowbells, and the constant presence of the Julian Alps.
Bovec Basin Walk & Walk of Peace via Ravelnik Museum
On day 2, set out from Bovec to explore the surrounding basin of forests and pastures, crossing the aquamarine Soca River where rafts and kayaks often flash by. Follow a quieter lane towards Kal-Koritnica, then join the Walk of Peace, a memorial trail linking sites from the First World War’s Isonzo Front. The route returns to town via the Ravelnik Outdoor Museum, a hillside dotted with trenches and dugouts.
Here you can pause for photos and reflection among preserved positions that once faced the Julian Alps. Learn how these slopes became a front line between 1915 and 1917, and how the valley’s serene meadows and spruce woods now shelter the memories of a turbulent past within Triglav National Park.
Soca Trail: Trenta to Bovec & Great Soca Gorge
On day 4, a transfer brings you upstream to Trenta to join the Soca Trail (Pot Soce), a classic riverside path in Triglav National Park. Walk through spruce forest and wildflower meadows, crossing pedestrian suspension bridges as the river slips from broad pools into chutes and rapids.
Soon the valley narrows into the Great Soca Gorge, where water carves turquoise channels only a few metres wide beneath polished limestone. The path threads past farms and chapels, with constant views to Mangart and the Kanin massif. It’s a day to pause for photos and reflection, following a river whose colour and clarity have become a symbol of the Slovenian Alps.
Boka Waterfall & Soca Valley to Trnovo
On day 5, leave Bovec through pastures and larch to a viewpoint over Slap Boka, among Slovenia’s tallest waterfalls, plunging in stages down a limestone wall. Rejoin the valley track to cross the Soca River, passing Log Cezsoški and stretches where you can watch rafters dance through waves from the span of a suspension bridge.
The route continues beside gravel bars and alder woods towards Trnovo ob Soci, where the valley broadens and mountain silhouettes soften. Expect the scents of river mint and wet stone, and views opening towards the lower Soca. Later, you’re transferred to Ribcev Laz on Lake Bohinj for the next chapter of your journey.
Lake Bohinj Boat Crossing (Ukanc to Ribcev Laz)
During day 6, after visiting Slap Savica and reaching Ukanc, you may choose to board the electric tourist boat for a serene glide across Lake Bohinj back to Ribcev Laz. Watch the sunset over the lagoon-like shallows as forested slopes and high ridgelines slip by in near silence.
This is a relaxing way to shorten the walking loop and soak in the lakeside atmosphere, with time to wander the old stone bridge and the frescoed church at journey’s end. This experience is at additional cost and is bookable on tour; departures operate regularly in season, weather permitting.
