Our week begins at Hotel Il Quercieto in Dorgali, a Sardinian hill town known for its mountainous scenery and close proximity to the coast.Around 6pm, say ciao to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead. Your tour leader then ensures a big welcome over our first group dinner.Want more time in Sardinia? Secure pre-tour hotel nights through your sales representative.

Meals: Dinner

We start with an orientation walk, talking an old path that winds around Monte Tului (3,005ft/916m) and offers some of the best views of the Gulf of Orosei to one side, and the mountainous interior around Dorgali on the other. The walk should take around five hours.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Enjoy sweeping views on a drive above the Flumineddu Valley, before arriving at Gorropu Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of Europe. Its narrow, vertical walls reach 1,640ft (500m), making it the deepest natural gorge in Europe. Appreciate all its glory on our walk, which takes around six hours. There is a chance to paddle in the river, if conditions allow. This evening, there is the opportunity to enjoy dinner in a restaurant in Dorgali centre – payable locally.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch

Today we learn more about the Nuragic people, considered the most accomplished yet mysterious civilisation in the Mediterranean. We start with a drive to the Giants Tomb, a megalithic grave site from the Bronze Age, before visiting the Serra Orrios archaeological complex, home to a fascinating collection of stone hut ruins.

We then have time for a quick coffee stop before driving to Cala Orsala. This is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, surrounded by rocks, pinewoods and lush Mediterranean scrub. We have lunch on the beach (weather permitting). Next up is a visit to the Grotta Ispinigoli, a cave home to the longest stalactite-stalagmite column in Europe. We finish the day in style, heading to a winery (cantina) for a tasting and short talk about the local wines.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Today is free to explore the archaeological sites of the Dorgali region, take an optional self-guided walk or simply relax by the beach and enjoy the leisurely Sardinian lifestyle. Horse riding can also be arranged (the price and all details to be agreed locally with the hotel). Alternatively, take an optional boat trip to the Bue Marino Grotto (weather permitting).

Meals: Breakfast

Today we visit the mysterious Nuragic village of Tiscali – not much is known about its origins, nor the people who lived there. It seems to have been populated before the Nuragic era but archaeologists put its main period of activity between the second and first centuries BCE. The dwellings are virtually invisible until you are at the vast cavity in which they are built. This has led some to postulate that people returned here to hide from the Romans.

We also visit Su Gologone, described as a natural masterpiece, where karst has been sculpted by rushing water as it exits the gorge. The water is tinged green or blue, depending on the angle of the sun, and an astonishing 130 gallons (500 litres) of water per second comes crashing out of the chasm into this mini oasis.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

We start the day with a boat trip to Cala Luna, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Here there will be time to explore the large caves and, as this is a popular spot for rock climbing, we may get to see some enthusiasts put their skills to the test. The walk back to Cala Gonone taks us through a vast forest and along deep gulleys, with occasional views of the coast. At the end of the walk at Cala Gonone we will have time for a very welcome drink and the opportunity for a swim before we return to Dorgali.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Our Sardinia trip comes to an end after breakfast. Say a fond farewell to Hotel Il Quercieto, before beginning your return journey home. Alternatively, speak to your sales representative to extend your adventure and spend more time exploring Sardinia.

Popular Sardinian specialities include roast suckling pig, excellent seafood dishes, and local wines, such as vermentino, nuragus, cannonau and monica. Mirto, which is made from the leaves of the myrtle plant, is Sardinia’s after-dinner liqueur.

Although meals mostly consist of meat/fish, the hotel staff endeavour to meet specific dietary requirements. Please advise us before departure so the hotel has sufficient time to prepare.

Saddle up for a guided horse ride through holm-oak woods and open scrub, with steady views to the limestone ridges that ring Dorgali.

This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour via the hotel. Suitable for most abilities with helmets provided; weather and trail conditions determine the final route.

Arrive in Dorgali and meet your tour leader and fellow walkers at Hotel Il Querceto for a friendly briefing and welcome dinner showcasing Sardinian flavours. Share plans for the week over seasonal antipasti, handmade pasta and local cheeses, paired with pours of Cannonau.

This relaxed evening captures Dorgali’s warm hospitality, with insights on trail conditions, safety and regional culture. Expect a convivial mood and introductions that set a confident, supportive pace for the hikes ahead.

Join a guided ridge walk along an old shepherds’ path skirting Monte Tului, with broad panoramas over the Gulf of Orosei and the rugged Supramonte. This opening hike sets your footing on Sardinia’s limestone terrain and winds through scented maquis.

Tread juniper- and rosemary-lined paths as your leader interprets the area’s geology and pastoral heritage, pointing out ancient mule tracks and endemic flora. Photostops abound across wind-carved ridgelines and sea-facing viewpoints.

Hike Gola di Gorropu, where soaring limestone walls funnel into a boulder-strewn corridor often cited among Europe’s deepest canyons. Pick your way over polished stones and sandy beds beneath cliffs that tower hundreds of metres overhead.

Pause by the Flumineddu River to cool tired feet with a paddle when conditions allow. Your leader highlights karst formations, golden eagles and rare saxifrages, inviting quiet moments to appreciate the gorge’s profound natural hush.

Explore a Bronze Age Giants’ Tomb before continuing to the Serra Orrios archaeological complex, a plateau dotted with hut foundations and sanctuaries that map a vanished world in stone.

Unpack the realm of the Nuragic civilization as your leader explains clan life, megalithic rituals and dry-stone engineering. Circular dwellings and sacred precincts reveal a Mediterranean culture that thrived long before Rome.

Settle at Cala Orsala, a sheltered cove of pale sand framed by pinewoods and tawny rock, to enjoy a relaxed picnic on the beach as the water shifts through bands of turquoise and cobalt.

Swim in clear shallows, breathe the scent of myrtle and rosemary, and absorb the easy coastal rhythm between hikes. This interlude showcases Sardinia’s unspoiled shores on the Orosei coast.

Step inside Grotta Ispinigoli to witness a soaring calcite column uniting stalactite and stalagmite in a vast subterranean hall often likened to an underground cathedral.

Cool cavern air, rhythmic drips and mineral bands chart Sardinia’s karst formations over millennia. Your guide illuminates geology and lore as you gaze up at nature’s monumental stone sculpture.

Visit a local cantina to sample regional wines, with generous pours of Cannonau alongside Vermentino and Monica as your host explains terroir, altitude and sea breezes shaping each vintage.

Pair sips with pecorino and paper-thin pane carasau, learning how traditional methods endure on family estates. This relaxed tasting maps the flavours of central-eastern Sardinia in the glass.

Hike to Tiscali, a hidden Nuragic village concealed within a vast collapse-dolina cave on Monte Tiscali and invisible until you enter its yawning opening.

Pick your way among stone dwellings and cisterns as your leader shares theories of a community seeking refuge from Roman expansion. Expect airy views across the wild Lanaitho Valley between rocky scrambles and shaded paths.

Visit Su Gologone, a powerful spring where emerald water wells from a limestone chasm to form a tranquil pool shaded by oleander and framed by pale rock.

Hear how artists and pilgrims were drawn to this source, and pause for photos as ripples mirror the Supramonte cliffs. The vivid colour shifts with sunlight and season, lending the scene a meditative calm.

Take a boat to Cala Luna and step onto a pale crescent beach punctuated by vast sea caves that open like natural apses beside the shore.

Trace a coastal walk to Cala Gonone through forests and gulleys, with sudden balconies over the Gulf of Orosei. Round off with a refreshing swim or a celebratory drink on the seafront.

Board a boat to Grotta del Bue Marino to explore vast sea caves famed for glittering stalactites, clear waters and stories of once-resident monk seals.

This excursion is at additional cost, bookable on tour and weather permitting. Sail along dramatic cliffs, step into cool chambers and admire the play of light on sculpted rock.
