Trek the GR20 of Corsica route map

Our adventure begins in Conca, a one-time shepherd village among forested hills, and the southern start point of the GR20. There’s time to settle into our accommodation this afternoon.

Around 7pm, say salute to your tour leader and fellow travellers, where we gather as a group to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead during a welcome briefing. Your tour leader then ensures a big welcome over dinner together.

Meals: Dinner

The first hiking day is tough, a good introduction to the pace and challenge ahead. The trail leads uphill from Conca, following an ancient herders’ route through a rocky landscape of granite blocks and pines. The route continues to the Paliri refuge, then crosses the Finosa col before arriving at the hamlet of Bavella, below the Bavella Needles, great granite spikes that create a rocky ridge. We spend the night in dorms, resting after a challenging first day.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Before dawn, we take the Alpine Variant trail, which leads steeply uphill before passing the base of several granite pinnacles. Plunge into the valley before following an easy route through woods towards the Asinao refuge, before heading steeply up to the magnificent ridgeline of Monte Alcudina.

We then leave the high ground and head down towards the Cuscionu plateau, the largest on the island. We sleep in dorms at a shepherds’ cabin on the edge of the plateau.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Pick up the trail on the plateau and cross the open green pasture with streams and little water holes. We then make our way uphill through an old forest of dwarf oak trees up to the Col de l’Agnone. From here, we start one of the best ridge hikes in Corsica; it is very exposed, the trail is tricky and you may find it difficult to imagine that there’s a way through. A real adventure!

The trail runs back and forth over the ridge, before we drop to the village of Cozzano, a hive of activity in the heart of the mountains.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

From the refuge, continue along a ridge separating the valley of Taravo and the village of Fiumorbu, after which the trail plunges towards the Col de Laparo. We pass the GR refuge, Prati, where we can stop to enjoy rooftop views of the island. It is sometimes possible to see the Italian islands of Elba and Montecristo. The descent winds rapidly, in and out of the forest, to our destination at the Col de Verde.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

The trail rolls gently today and mainly contours through a forest of lariccio pine trees, a symbol of the island. Today’s hike traverses the flanks of the dominating mountain, Monte Renosu. We continue to Bocca Palmente; on a clear day, the views are exceptional, the looming massifs of the Monte d’Oro and the Rotondu towering above. Drop down into a thick forest of pine and beech trees for a relaxing descent, the trail loops back and forth down to Vizzavona, the midway point of the GR20.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Today we start the northern section of the GR20. We typically embark on a steady ascent to the Brêche de Muratellu, taking the path running alongside the Cascade des Anglais up to Muratellu, affording stunning views of the Monte Rotondu. This high-level route follows the ridge, via the summit of Pinzi Corbini to Petra Piana refuge. This is a short but challenging ridge section, steep and exposed.

Due to bad weather or other factors, it may be required to take an alternative lower valley walk, which heads directly to Petra Piana. The alternative route follows a variation of the northern Mare a Mare trail through Vivario Forest. A pleasant path eventually joins the GR20 at the Tolla footbridge, before continuing up the beautiful Manganellu Valley alongside the stream. Along the way, you’ll pass magnificent natural pools that offer inviting spots for a refreshing swim, as well as the nearby shepherds’ huts of Tolla and Gialgo. A final climb leads to a small pass at the head of the valley, followed by the Petra Piana mountain hut, nestled at the foot of Monte Rotondu.

Tonight we camp near the Petra Piana refuge without access to our bags.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

From Petra Piana, a short uphill section takes us to the high ridge above the refuge. The trail is rocky, almost lunar in ambiance. You pass a mountain col and continue the high route. The views are spectacular with Corte, the one-time capital of the island, in the distance and a series of wonderful glacier lakes to discover. From the small clearing above Lake Capitello, we plunge downhill to Manganu refuge on the edge of the Camputile plateau. We camp tonight without access to our bags.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Go gently uphill, a relaxing walk through beech woods and across the green spongy turf to Lac de Nino, where we have a snack and relax on the lake’s banks. This glacier lake is in a sheltered spot, surrounded by spongy peat, with runnels of water and wells, ideal grazing ground for ponies and other animals in summer.

We drop down at the Col St Pierre to join a flat horseshoe-shaped trail to Castel di Vergio, a small ski station. At our hotel, we are reunited with our bags and a chance to refresh our backpacks.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

The GR20 follows the Golu torrent stream up the valley towards its source. Midway up the valley, the route crosses the torrent, a good place to relax on smooth sunbaked rocks and swim (if you’re feeling brave).

The trail leaves the valley floor and heads up to the ridgeline. From here, there are clear views of the west coast villages. The Ciottulu di i Mori refuge, the highest in Corsica, is situated between two daunting mountains: Tafanatu and Paglia Orba. From the refuge, the GR20 falls steeply downhill to Vallone. We camp tonight without access to our bags.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Today is a tough, high-altitude mountain hike. Make your way uphill progressively to the foothills of Monte Cinto, the highest summit on the island. The climb is steep, rocky and slow. After a couple of hours, we arrive at Bocca Crucetta, a ridge that leads to the Pointe des Eboulis; at 8,560ft (2,610m), this is the highest point on the GR20 and the view is spectacular.

From here, the path plunges to a small lake on the other side. The trail continues downhill, the scree and rocks giving way to a river and woods as we approach the old ski station of Haut Asco and we are reunited with our bags.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

From the ski station, a superb ascent takes us to Bocca di Stagnu at the foot of the Muvrella peak. From Lake Muvrella, the view over Calvi bay is incredible. From here, we head down to the refuge at Carrozzu, which is surrounded by box trees and enjoys great sunsets. We camp here without access to our bags.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

The first part of our hike is spectacular, as we enter a semi-circle of high mountains known as the Cirque de Bonifatu. The trail works around its edge offering panoramic views of the highest Corsican peaks.

The second half of our day sees us crossing an easier basin area dotted with woodland before arriving at the beautifully situated refuge at Orto di Pobbiu, where we camp without access to our bags.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Our final hiking day is varied and spectacular, from granite mountains to thick dense forests and low-level maquis scrub. The views over the coastline and the Balagne region are superb before we arrive at the bustling village of Calenzana, which is a hive of activity with GR20 hikers. There will be time for high fives and a photo or two to celebrate an incredible achievement, before we catch our transfer (two hours) to Bastia and a meal tonight where we can celebrate our achievements.

Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Our adventure ends after breakfast, and we begin our return journeys home. The airport is just a 20-minute walk from the hotel, and taxis are available upon request. Speak to your sales representative if you’d like to extend your stay.

Join a fully guided trek on the GR20, walking the quieter south-to-north direction with the sun mostly at your back. Your International Mountain Leader manages route-finding, weather calls, and group pacing on Corsica’s famously technical granite pathways and airy ridgelines.

Gain confidence on scrambly sections, learn footwork tips for boulder fields, and pause for photos and reflection at high passes. Trail insights cover local geology, flora like laricio pine, and culture shaped by centuries of pastoral life.

Tackle the celebrated Alpine Variant beneath the Aiguilles de Bavella, where blade-like granite pinnacles rise over fragrant pine woods. The approach weaves over sun-baked slabs and under crags, with rugged scenery that defines the GR20’s southern stages.

Trace the route past the Paliri refuge and across the Finosa col, moving through Corsica’s sculpted granite playground. Expect hands-on trail moments and sweeping vistas that set the tone for the island’s mountainous heart.

Climb to the wind-brushed crest of Monte Alcudina, a commanding 2,134m summit on the GR20’s southern high ground. The ridge offers far horizons across the island’s granite backbone and down to the Tyrrhenian shimmer.

Descend to the pastoral Cuscionu plateau, where turf is pocked with emerald pozzines and springs. The gentle openness contrasts with rocky heights, and summer grazing herds hint at centuries of transhumance tradition in these upland meadows.

Follow a sky-line path past the Refuge de Prati, where the island lies like a relief map at your feet. In crisp conditions you may glimpse distant Tuscan isles, Elba and Montecristo, floating beyond the Corsican coast.

From these airy crests, descend through aromatic pine to the Col de Verde. The terrain shifts from exposed ridge to forested switchbacks, offering varied footing and a rich sense of Corsica’s vertical diversity.

Contour beneath the flanks of Monte Renosu through stands of laricio pine, Corsica’s stately endemic. The trail rolls along historic spines, yielding big-shouldered views that put the central massifs in striking relief.

Reach Bocca Palmente for panoramas over the granite domes of Monte d’Oro and Monte Rotondu, then descend into cool mixed woodland to Vizzavona. The change from high mountain to forested valley feels like a deep exhale mid-route.

Follow a lively mountain path alongside the Cascade des Anglais, where clear torrents bead into rock basins. Smooth granite shelves and pine shade make it a classic GR20 waterside interlude.

Dip weary feet in the cool mountain water, listen to the echo of falls, and breathe resin-scented air. This stretch blends playful scrambling with tranquil pauses, showcasing Corsica’s union of stone and stream.

Gain a rocky crest above the Restonica headwaters for a rare, elevated view of Lake Capitello and its sibling, Lake Melo. The path threads a stark, near-lunar rockscape where granite blocks and scree crown the skyline.

From this eagle’s perch the lakes lie like dark mirrors in a cirque sculpted by ice. The setting reveals the GR20’s raw geology—hard, ancient stone softened by glacial legacy and wind.

Stroll into the high pastures surrounding Lac de Nino, where water meanders through spongey lawns and spring-fed hollows. The broad Camputile plateau invites an easier cadence amid green turf and wind-frayed grass.

Look for grazing horses and the classic GR20 pozzines—peaty pockets that shine like coins in the basin. It’s a serene counterpart to the route’s rougher ridges, with room to sit, snack, and watch clouds skim the peaks.

Trace the bright thread of the Golu torrent upstream, where water-smoothed slabs and plunge pools tempt a bracing swim. The path then climbs to a high balcony with views rolling to Corsica’s western villages.

Pass the island’s highest hut, the Ciottulu di i Mori refuge, tucked between Capu Tafunatu and Paglia Orba. Granite towers close around the trail, framing a stage of big mountains and sparkling river stone.

Climb from Bocca Crucetta over shattered scree to the GR20’s pinnacle at Pointe des Eboulis (2,610m). The ascent is steep and steady, rewarding grit with a jaw-dropping sweep over Corsica’s central spine.

Gaze across the vast Monte Cinto massif, island high point at 2,706m, before the route plunges to alpine tarns and resin-scented forest. It’s the trek’s defining pause for photos and reflection at the literal top of the trail.

Ascend to jewel-like Lake Muvrella and the airy Bocca di Stagnu, where a vast blue arc of Calvi Bay curves along the horizon. The contrast of sea and summits is pure Corsica.

Negotiate the famed Spasimata footbridge and polished granite slabs on the way to Carrozzu–Ortu di u Piobbu. This stage mixes playful exposure with camera-ready vistas, stitching mountain drama to a maritime panorama.

Skirt the rim of the Cirque de Bonifatu, a semi-circle of serrated summits cupping forested valleys. The balcony-style trail undulates across slabs and ledges, opening long views to Corsica’s highest cluster of peaks.

Granite architecture, sunlit ridges, and breezy cols create a rhythm of stride, scramble, and pause for photos and reflection. It’s a grandstand seat on the island’s most dramatic amphitheatre of rock.

Make the final descent toward Calenzana, with the coast and the villages of the Balagne region unfolding below. The scenery shifts from high granite to maquis-scented slopes of myrtle, cistus, and rosemary.

Arrive among lively cafés and hikers’ chatter, where a modest square becomes a finish-line arena. Celebrate with teammates, capture a last summit pose, and savor the arc traced across Corsica’s mountains to the sea.

Experience life in Corsican refuges and bergeries, sleeping in simple dorms or two-person tents set among pines and granite outcrops. Evenings revolve around steaming bowls, charcuterie, and hearty communal dinners that fuel the next day’s climb.

Learn the rhythms of high-mountain hospitality—guardians’ stories, weather lore, and the camaraderie of trekkers sharing maps and plans. The echo of wind on the ridge often becomes the night’s lullaby.

Taste the island through its produce with a curated sampling of Corsican cheeses and charcuterie paired to local wines. Expect brocciu-style cheeses, lonzu or prisuttu, and sun-burnished reds from Patrimonio or Ajaccio appellations.

Your tour leader can arrange this optional tasting during a hotel night on the route. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to local availability.

Explore the atmospheric lanes of the Terra Nova quarter on a guided stroll to the Bastia Citadel. Lantern-lit alleys, Genoese-era walls, and harbor views at sunset frame a gentle coastal finale to your mountain journey.

This optional walking tour is at additional cost and bookable on tour on your final evening in Bastia, subject to timing and guide availability.

Gather in Conca to meet your International Mountain Leader and your fellow trekkers for a thorough welcome briefing. Hear how the route unfolds south to north, what terrain to expect, and how luggage transfers and refuge nights work on Corsica’s iconic trail.

Share a convivial dinner featuring hearty Corsican fare and discuss pacing, safety, and daily trail etiquette. The briefing sets a supportive team spirit and aligns expectations for the rugged granite spine you’re about to cross.
