Edinburgh Tattoo & the Ayrshire Coast
After breakfast, we head to Edinburgh, where there’s free time to enjoy a bite to eat before making your way to the castle to take your seat for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The show brings together musicians and performers from every part of the world for a fabulous display of international culture – it’s always an incredible spectacle! After the performance, we travel back to our hotel.
Edinburgh Tattoo & the Ayrshire Coast
We explore the Ayrshire Coast and make our first stop at the popular seaside resort of Ayr. This little town boasts a charming seafront with an esplanade, long sandy beach and many fine Georgian and Victorian buildings. Our next stop is Troon, which overlooks the Isle of Arran and offers stunning, sandy beaches, which featured in the popular historical series Outlander, and a wealth of charming independent cafés and unique boutiques.
Edinburgh Tattoo & the Ayrshire Coast
On our way home, we enjoy a stop at the marriage capital of the world, Gretna Green. In this famous village lies the original spot where young eloping couples would marry ‘over the anvil’ at the Blacksmiths Shop.
Gretna Green & the Famous Blacksmiths Shop
Visit Gretna Green to visit the Famous Blacksmiths Shop, long celebrated as the marriage capital of the world. Discover how runaway couples would marry ‘over the anvil’ in swift ceremonies that sidestepped England’s stricter laws—a cross-border tradition woven into local folklore.
Explore exhibits that trace romantic escapades from the 18th century onward and hear tales of ‘anvil priests’ who forged unions at a moment’s notice. Time permitting, pause for photos and reflection by the anvil—a symbol of vows sealed in hot metal.
Ayrshire Coast: Ayr & Troon Seaside Visit
Explore the Ayrshire coast with time in Ayr and Troon. In Ayr, stroll the seafront to walk the esplanade and its long sandy beach, backed by Georgian and Victorian facades. In Troon, wander by the harbour and enjoy views to the Isle of Arran from wide, wind-brushed sands.
This Clyde coast outing pairs genteel architecture with big-sky horizons. Ayr recalls its resort heyday; Troon is synonymous with championship links and sea air. Pause for photos and reflection as gulls wheel over the Firth of Clyde.
Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Evening Performance
Experience the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo with a reserved seat for the evening performance on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade. Watch massed pipes and drums, precision drill teams, and international bands play against the soaring ramparts, illuminated by synchronised lights and fireworks.
Since 1950, this open-air spectacle has honoured Scottish military heritage and global culture. Expect stirring anthems, Highland dancers, and the lone piper’s haunting finale above the city—an emotional close to a night of ceremony and colour.
