We explore the Ayrshire Coast and make our first stop at the popular seaside resort of Ayr. This little town boasts a charming seafront with an esplanade, long sandy beach and many fine Georgian and Victorian buildings. Our next stop is Troon, which overlooks the Isle of Arran and offers stunning, sandy beaches, which featured in the popular historical series Outlander, and a wealth of charming independent cafés and unique boutiques.

On our way home, we enjoy a stop at the marriage capital of the world, Gretna Green. In this famous village lies the original spot where young eloping couples would marry ‘over the anvil’ at the Blacksmiths Shop.

Discover the Ayrshire shoreline in the classic seaside towns of Ayr and Troon. Amble the long sandy beach and esplanade, admire genteel Georgian and Victorian architecture, and feel the salt-tinged breeze roll in from the Firth of Clyde.

Savour harbour panoramas with views to the Isle of Arran, note links to championship golf at Royal Troon, and spot stretches of sand seen in the historical series Outlander. Expect a relaxed coastal mood—sea birds, bracing air, and time to pause for photographs.

Visit Gretna Green, the storied border village famed for runaway romances. Pause at the historic Blacksmiths Shop precinct to see the symbolic anvil and hear how young couples would marry ‘over the anvil’ beneath the forge’s beams. Coaches and carriages once rattled in from England, seeking swift vows.

Learn how England’s 1754 laws drove elopers north, while Scotland’s simpler rules enabled declarations before witnesses. The tradition endures today, making this compact stop rich in social history and sentimental lore.

Explore the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, pausing in the villages of Luss and Balloch. Wander flower-trimmed lanes, stroll the pier, and admire mirror-bright waters set against heathered slopes and the broad shoulder of Ben Lomond.

Absorb stories of clan islands, glacial geology, and Gaelic place-names that shaped Scotland’s heartland. The day centres on gentle lakeside moments—photographs by the beach at Luss, and wide-angle views from Balloch—capturing the calm rhythm and soft light of Highland scenery.

Experience the pageantry of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo as you take your reserved seat on the cobbled Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. Giant projections wash the ancient stone, the arena glows, and anticipation builds under the open sky for an open-air spectacle unlike any other.

Thrill to the massed pipes and drums, precision marching bands, and Highland dancers alongside international performers. Expect stirring anthems, a lone piper, and fireworks edging the ramparts in an outdoor, all-weather performance that celebrates Scotland’s military heritage and global connections.
