Sail the Gulf of Tigullio on a scenic boat from Rapallo to elegant Santa Margherita Ligure, where palm-lined promenades front Liberty-style villas. Continue across the bay to Portofino, its pastel-hued harbour ringed by fishermen’s houses, boutiques and bobbing yachts beneath wooded hillsides.

Stroll the quay, climb to Castello Brown for sweeping views, or linger over gelato on the piazzetta. Short crossings reveal green headlands and lighthouse-topped points shaping this refined stretch of the Italian Riviera.

Explore Genoa, the storied Ligurian port, by weaving through the shadowy caruggi alleyways to Piazza De Ferrari and grand Via Garibaldi. Admire the UNESCO-listed Palazzi dei Rolli, facades that speak of mercantile power and Baroque artistry rooted in the city’s maritime heyday.

Head to the revitalised Porto Antico, reimagined by Renzo Piano, where arcades, docks and sea breezes frame cafés and street life. Pause for photos and reflection, or sample warm, olive-oil-rich focaccia fresh from the counter.

Gather with fellow travellers and meet your Tour Manager over a relaxed welcome drink at Hotel Scandinavia, a short stroll from the sands of Marina di Massa on the Tuscan coast. Hear practical tips for making the most of the week.

Your Tour Manager outlines included excursions, optional choices and local customs, from beach etiquette to the evening passeggiata. A concise briefing that sets expectations, answers questions and establishes a convivial tone for your Italian stay.

Savour a traditional Tuscan dinner in the hotel restaurant, featuring seasonal antipasti, rustic country soups and slow-cooked meats scented with rosemary and olive oil. Glasses of local wines complement produce-led flavours shaped by the nearby Apuan foothills and coastal farms.

Learn how cucina povera celebrates quality ingredients and time-honoured technique, with handmade pasta and grilled vegetables at centre stage. Conclude sweetly with cantucci with Vin Santo, toasting the region’s generous food culture among new travel companions.

Visit the Piazza dei Miracoli to admire the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Romanesque Cathedral and the circular Baptistery set on emerald lawns. Study marble arcades and gentle tilts as your camera frames classic angles of this celebrated ensemble.

Continue to Lucca, encircled by the Renaissance walls of Lucca, to stroll Via Fillungo and the oval Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. This optional excursion is at additional cost (£45pp) and bookable on tour, with time for a coffee or gelato.

Join a boat and cruise the Cinque Terre from La Spezia along rugged headlands toward Liguria’s cliff-clinging villages. Disembark to explore the beach-fringed lanes of Monterosso al Mare and the tiny harbor of Vernazza, where pastel facades stack above fishing boats and wave-washed rocks facing the open sea.

Understand how this protected coastline balances ancient agriculture with modern conservation as vine and olive terraces stripe the slopes. Return to La Spezia by regional train, skirting stone-built hamlets and sea-level tunnels that reveal a different perspective on the Riviera’s dramatic geology.
