Insight Vacations

Gather for dinner in a traditional boma setting at your Serengeti camp. Share a meal with your small group beside the fire, with the sounds of the surrounding bush lending the evening its atmosphere.

A boma is a style of enclosed gathering space long used across East Africa. Its circular layout creates an intimate setting for conversation and offers a distinctive way to experience the Serengeti beyond the hours spent watching wildlife.

Explore Gibb’s Farm near Karatu, a working coffee estate on the fertile slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands. Tour its gardens and growing areas, where coffee, fruit, vegetables and herbs contribute to the food prepared on the property.

Enjoy a farm-to-table lunch shaped by the estate’s produce. Founded in the 1920s, Gibb’s Farm offers a perspective on the region’s agricultural heritage and the connection between its highland soil and local cuisine.

Meet members of the Hadzabe community near Lake Eyasi and learn about skills tied to hunting, gathering and detailed knowledge of the surrounding bush. Discover aspects of food preparation and daily life, hear their distinctive click language and, if the opportunity arises, try archery.

The visit takes place in the Great Rift Valley landscape that has long sustained the community. It offers a chance to listen and learn directly from your hosts rather than view their traditions from a distance.

Meet the Datoga near Lake Eyasi, a pastoral community with longstanding cattle-keeping and metalworking traditions. Learn how blacksmithing skills are practised and passed on, and explore their place in everyday life in northern Tanzania.

Set against the dry landscapes of the Great Rift Valley, this community visit reveals a way of life distinct from that of the neighbouring Hadzabe. Conversation and demonstrations bring the Datoga’s craft heritage into focus.

Choose to walk through a Karatu village with your Driver Guide and learn about the communities, markets and farming that shape life in the Ngorongoro Highlands. See an inhabited rural landscape rather than a park or viewpoint.

Karatu is a hub for the surrounding agricultural area, with people and produce moving through its local markets. This is one of two included Trafalgar Choice activities, offering a grounded look at everyday life beyond the safari reserves.

Descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a guided game drive across the floor of the world’s largest intact, unfilled volcanic caldera. Search for wildlife around its grasslands and water sources, with the steep crater walls forming a dramatic natural backdrop.

Pause for a picnic lunch on the crater floor, surrounded by this distinctive landscape. Year-round water and grazing support a high concentration of animals, making the crater an exceptional setting for observing wildlife within a compact area.

Travel on guided game drives through Serengeti National Park, scanning open plains, rocky kopjes and river lines for lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra and antelope. Wildlife sightings vary with the season and the movement of animals in search of water and grazing.

The park takes its name from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning “wide endless plains”. Time in the safari vehicle lets you observe how different habitats support one of Africa’s richest wildlife ecosystems.

Visit a Zanzibar herb and spice farm for a closer look at crops associated with the island’s Indian Ocean trade. Discover the scents and uses of cloves, cardamom and other spices in the place where they are grown.

Zanzibar’s reputation as a spice-producing island reflects centuries of commerce linking East Africa with Arabia and beyond. The farm visit connects those trading histories to the plants, aromas and flavours that remain part of local cuisine.

Join local women at Mama’s of Zanzibar for a hands-on cooking lesson. Work with local ingredients and traditional methods to prepare dishes centred on Swahili flavours, then sit down together to share the meal you have made.

Zanzibari cooking reflects the island’s long connections across the Indian Ocean. Preparing food alongside your hosts offers a personal introduction to those influences and to the hospitality behind dishes served in local homes.

Choose to tour the working coffee plantation at Lake Duluti Lodge near Arusha. Learn about coffee growing in the fertile highlands beneath Mount Meru, with the lodge’s grounds and nearby volcanic crater lake providing the setting.

Coffee has long been an important crop in northern Tanzania. This optional visit offers a closer look at the agricultural landscape surrounding your lodge. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour; participation is not required.

Sail along Zanzibar’s coast by traditional dhow and snorkel in the warm Indian Ocean waters. From the boat, take in the reef-fringed shoreline; beneath the surface, look for marine life among the coastal reefs.

Dhows are closely tied to the seafaring traditions that connected Zanzibar with ports across the Indian Ocean. This optional experience combines that maritime heritage with time in the water. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to conditions and availability.

Visit Shanga in Arusha, a social enterprise that trains and employs Tanzanians with disabilities. Walk through its workshops to see weaving, glassblowing, beading, paper making and metalwork, including pieces fashioned from recycled materials.

Meet the makers behind the crafts and learn how practical skills and meaningful employment support the local community. The visit offers a close look at contemporary Tanzanian creativity and a project rooted in opportunity.

Explore Tarangire National Park on guided game drives through open savannah and riverine woodland. Look for elephant herds beneath ancient baobabs, and enjoy a private breakfast in the bush amid the sounds of the waking landscape.

Tarangire’s river draws wildlife across the park, particularly in the dry season. In the cooler late-afternoon hours, pause for a sundowner in the wilderness as the falling light changes the colours of the grassland.

Choose a Swahili lesson with a Local Specialist to get acquainted with a language spoken across Tanzania and much of East Africa. Practise useful words and expressions while learning how language helps connect communities across the region.

This is one of two included Trafalgar Choice activities offered near Karatu. The lesson adds a personal cultural dimension to the journey, giving you a chance to engage more confidently with the greetings heard in daily life.

Explore UNESCO-listed Stone Town with a Local Specialist, moving through market streets and among landmarks shaped by Zanzibar’s Swahili, Arab, Indian and European connections. See the House of Wonders and visit the Sultan’s Palace Museum and Old Arab Fort.

Built in 1883 for Sultan Barghash, the House of Wonders became known for its early electricity and lift. The fort, built in 1699, recalls an older chapter of the island’s history amid Stone Town’s busy lanes and seafront.

Choose to visit a Maasai village near Tarangire for an introduction to local traditions and community life. The visit offers an opportunity to learn from residents about a culture closely associated with the landscapes of northern Tanzania.

Maasai communities maintain deep ties to cattle keeping and the region’s grasslands, while daily life continues to evolve. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; ask your Driver Guide for details and availability.

Head out on an optional sunset cruise off Zanzibar and view the island’s coastline from the water as daylight fades over the Indian Ocean. The changing light offers a different perspective on the shore beyond Stone Town’s streets and seafront.

Centuries of maritime trade have shaped Zanzibar’s culture and waterfront. This cruise is a leisurely way to experience its ocean setting. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to availability.
