Additional information

Steaming through Scenic Shropshire & Severn Valley Railway

For our first excursion, we start the day by taking a charming trip on the Severn Valley Railway for a heritage train journey from Kidderminster to the ancient town of Bridgnorth. The train meanders its way along the picturesque Severn Valley, passing sleepy towns and villages along the way. After a lovely journey, we spend some free time in Bridgnorth, notable for its many black and white buildings. The town is divided into two distinct areas: High Town and Low Town, connected by the unique cliff railway. High Town offers stunning views of the River Severn and features historic landmarks such as St. Mary’s Church and Bridgnorth Castle ruins, which lean at a greater angle than the Tower of Pisa! Low Town, situated along the river, was once a bustling port and retains its charming riverside appeal, with plenty of eateries on offer to treat yourself.

Today we make our way to Ludlow, famous for its market which has taken place for over 900 years. There’s plenty of time to explore the stalls and find yourself a hidden gem or an interesting hand-crafted gift – it’s the perfect place to shop for presents.

Steaming through Scenic Shropshire & Severn Valley Railway

We travel to Shrewsbury, a fine medieval market town packed with timber-framed black and white buildings, a maze of narrow alleys and cobbled streets. Here we board our boat for a scenic cruise along the River Severn as it loops around the town. We enjoy light refreshments while we take in the beautiful views and learn about the town’s unique history from our captain’s commentary.

Cruise the River Severn on a gentle loop around Shrewsbury, sipping tea, coffee and biscuits as green banks, church spires and mellow brick glide past. Settle on deck for shifting views of The Quarry and the Dingle, with the captain’s commentary bringing sights to life.

From the water, appreciate the town’s half-timbered skyline, red sandstone castle and crossings of Welsh Bridge and English Bridge. This is the birthplace of Charles Darwin; stories of merchants, river trade and history add texture as the Severn curls beneath willow and alder.

Explore Ludlow Market in Castle Square, a tradition trading for over 900 years beside the walls of Ludlow Castle. Browse stalls laden with artisan cheeses, breads, preserves and local crafts, or pick up hand-thrown pottery and woollens while buskers and bell chimes set a lively Shropshire soundtrack.

Framed by black-and-white timber fronts, Georgian facades and soaring tower of St Laurence’s Church, the square captures the food-loving spirit of the Welsh Marches. Chat with producers, compare seasonal finds and taste what makes Ludlow renowned among chefs and slow-food fans across Britain.

Board a vintage steam train for a heritage steam journey on the Severn Valley Railway from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth. Settle into varnished carriages as countryside slips by, the whistle echoes across fields, and river views break through wooded cuttings. Spot the Victoria Bridge spanning the Severn.

This preserved line showcases Victorian-era stations and classic signal boxes as it threads the Wyre Forest and follows the river’s bends. In Bridgnorth, wander between High Town and Low Town and pause by the leaning castle remains on the red sandstone ridge.
