Secrets of Slovenia Self-Guided Cycling route map

Arrive at your 4 star hotel on the promenade of Lake Bled. Enjoy some of the hotel facilities before heading into Bled for dinner.

Today’s ride takes you on a circular route from Bled passing through pretty Slovene villages. There is an optional detour to visit Grad Kamen Castle. The route then brings you back into Bled along the shores of the Lake.

Meals: Breakfast

An early start today with a scenic train journey along one of the most picturesque railway lines in the area with 28 tunnels, five galleries and 68 bridges. Your cycle route starts in Kanal and soon you’ll be joining a newly built cycle path, following the emerald crystal clear Soča river to the sun-kissed wine country, Goriška Brda. The local wines and culinary delights will help you get your strength back after a lovely trip.

Meals: Breakfast

You’ll spend the day exploring the Brda wine growing region. Following the so-called ‘peach’ route you will be cycling through the charming landscape covered with vineyards, orchards and olive groves. Cycling through small hilltop villages and past renaissance manors will tempt you for lunch with a view.

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, we take you (45 min transfer) to the village of Štanjel. Štanjel is a place of countless unique stories, where you’ll become acquainted with stonemason Karst architecture. This region is the home of Teran ruby wine and tasty air-dried Karst prosciutto. Your destination for today is Lipica – home of the famous Lipizzaner white horses. Extend your day by cycling to the Škocjan caves, considered to be one of the most beautiful underground gems and a UNESCO World heritage site.

Meals: Breakfast,Dinner

Before you set off, take the opportunity of a guided tour of Lipica Stud farm, a unique green estate home to the white Lipizzaner horses. Once you set off cycling the scenery changes as you leave the Karst region behind and the view opens up to the Adriatic sea. You’ll head into Italy for a short time today and join the famous Parenzana coastal trail which runs on the former narrow-gauge between the Italian city Trieste and Poreč in Croatia. Your final two nights are spent on the coast in the medieval town of Koper, linked to the Venetian republic until the end of the 18th Century.

Meals: Breakfast

The Parenzana trail runs along the coast, takes a turn among vineyards and partly runs through tunnels. It will take you through Portorož, a lively tourist town with sandy beach, to Piran. This worldly town, which developed under the influence of Venice, is considered to be one of the most authentic and most photogenic towns on the Adriatic coast. Return to Koper.

Slovenia’s cuisine reflects its rich heritage. Neighbours Austria, Italy and Hungary influence most dishes on the menu. In the mountains, Austrian style salamis (klobasa) prevail. You’ll often find them seasoning the hearty soups served in the Alpine huts. Kruha juha is the best – you get to eat the bowl too as it’s made out of bread! The Hungarian influence is seen in the spicy meat dishes.  Pleskavica (steak with herbs and paprika) is a good one to try.  On the coast, you’ll find Italian fayre, like rizota (risotto) with fresh mussels or zkilofri (Slovenian ravioli). And if you are still hungry, indulge yourself in a slice of potica (a creamy Swiss roll with walnuts).

Slovenia has been making wine since pre-Roman times, and boasts the oldest vine in the world, that has grown for four centuries. In the Vipava Valley, the stone villages are full of velbani hrami (vaulted wine cellars) where you can taste Teran (a heavy red best drunk with the local prsut or ham) or Rebula (a dry, crisp white). In the mountains look out for the bewildering variety of schnapps made from wormwood, blueberries, honey and even pine needles!

Explore the rolling ridges of Goriška Brda, Slovenia’s ‘Tuscany’, pedalling between terraced vineyards, peach orchards and olive groves. Climb to the panoramic platform of the slender Gonjace Tower and gaze across a patchwork of green slopes stitched with dry-stone walls and cypress.

Stone villages such as Šmartno and Dobrovo reveal Renaissance manors and rural chapels, their courtyards scented with herbs. Local cellars prize white Rebula and elegant blends; even without a tasting, the winemaking heritage shapes the landscape and the welcome you encounter.

Visit the karst stronghold of Štanjel, famed for stonemason craft and honey-coloured lanes. Wander to Fabiani’s terraced Ferrari Garden, set over a rain-catching cistern, before riding across open limestone to Lipica, where pale meadows and oak woods herald the stud-farm estate.

This is Teran wine and pršut country, shaped by the bora wind and porous rock. Traditional karst architecture—arched portals, thick walls, slate roofs—sets a distinctive tone as you cross a landscape unlike any other in Slovenia.

Join the Parenzana, a former narrow-gauge railway reborn as a coastal cycleway. Tunnels and viaducts carry you above olive groves and salt-white flats, with widening views toward the Gulf of Trieste and the Adriatic coast.

The route slips briefly into Italy before curving back to Slovenia’s shore. Finish amid Koper’s Venetian Old Town, where bell towers and loggias recall centuries under the Serenissima.

Pedal the Slovenian Riviera between Koper and the seafront promenades of Portorož and Piran, skirting the salt pans of Secovlje and tiny fishing harbours. Gentle gradients invite unhurried riding and wide-angle photos of sailboats, bell towers and terracotta roofs above a calm bay.

In Piran, Venetian Gothic facades frame Tartini Square while St George’s Church crowns the headland. Linger by the water or climb for coastal panoramas before following the shoreline back toward Koper.

Meet your local representative in Bled for a professional bike fitting and route briefing. Saddles, brakes and e-bike settings are adjusted to your preference while the Headwater navigation app is demonstrated, ensuring confident turn-by-turn guidance on dedicated paths and quiet backroads.

Receive insider tips on road rules, coffee-stop villages and weather patterns across the Alps and coast. It is a practical, safety-first session that sets you up for smooth days in the saddle.

Detour from the Bled loop to Grad Kamen Castle above Begunje na Gorenjskem, climbing through beech forest to a romantic ruin perched beneath the Jelovica plateau. Explore curtain walls and a keep with outlooks over the Radovljica Plain before freewheeling back toward the lakeside.

Once held by the Lambergh family, the fortress guarded mountain routes for centuries. This optional visit is at additional cost where applicable and bookable on tour.

Join a guided tour of the Lipica Stud Farm, walking among ancient trees and whitewashed stables as trainers work with the Lipizzaner horses. Visit the historic core and training arena to learn how selective breeding and classical schooling shape these athletic animals.

Founded in 1580 to supply the Habsburg court, Lipica shares bloodlines with Vienna’s Spanish Riding School. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Visit the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the Reka River thunders through a vast subterranean canyon. Walk safe pathways and the dramatic Cerkvenik Bridge suspended above the chasm, with echoing caverns, dripping formations and a cool mineral breeze.

The caves are a textbook example of karst geology and hydrology, revered by scientists and travellers alike. This optional excursion is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Step into vaulted cellars in Goriška Brda to sample regional wines with local nibbles. Expect crisp Rebula, aromatic whites and supple reds poured by small producers who explain terroir, maceration and the traditions that define this cross-border wine country.

Tastings highlight centuries of viticulture shaped by Mediterranean sun and Alpine breezes. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Cycle the shoreline of Lake Bled on quiet roads and lakeside paths, pausing at viewpoints over Bled Island and clifftop Bled Castle. Gentle gradients and picture-book villages make this an easy warm-up ride, with reflections of forested slopes rippling across the emerald water.

Glacial Bled sits beneath the Julian Alps and Karawanks, long favoured by Habsburg nobility and modern-day hikers. Expect the soft ring of church bells across the lake and cafés serving the local kremšnita pastry—a serene introduction to Slovenia’s alpine scenery.

Board the Bohinj Railway for a spectacular ride from alpine valleys toward the Soca. This early 20th-century engineering feat dives through 28 tunnels, five galleries and 68 bridges, revealing sudden vistas of limestone peaks, river gorges and pastoral hamlets from your carriage window.

The line once linked Central Europe to the Adriatic; today it is a scenic prelude to your cycling days. Watch for pale stone arches and forested cuttings that frame the emerald Soca River, a preview of the colours that define western Slovenia.

Follow a newly built cycle path as it traces the emerald Soca River from Kanal toward sun-kissed hills. Smooth surfaces and gentle gradients make space for pure scenery: hanging footbridges, translucent pools and boulder-strewn bends where white water flashes beneath beech and pine.

This valley bore the brunt of the Isonzo Front of the First World War; stone wayside shrines and small museums testify quietly to that past. Today it is a place of colour and clarity, leading you naturally into Goriška Brda’s vineyards.
