Steeped in history, York is one of England’s most fascinating cities. Enjoy free time to explore its medieval streets, wander through the famous Shambles with its quirky timber-framed buildings, or take a walk along the ancient city walls. At the heart of the city stands the magnificent York Minster, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, while the city’s cafés, shops and attractions offer plenty to discover at your own pace.
Full Day
Whitby Harbour, Abbey Views & 199 Steps
Discover Whitby’s historic harbour, where fishing boats sway below cliff-top ruins and salt air threads the lanes. Browse jet workshops and seaside shops, or watch gulls wheel above the piers as waves break against the harbour mouth.
Climb the storied 199 Steps to St Mary’s Church and gaze across to Whitby Abbey, the dramatic ruin that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Maritime tales of Captain Cook and whaling echo through this atmospheric port, offering superb photo opportunities across the North Sea.
Evening Entertainment at the Grand Hotel, Scarborough
Unwind with light evening entertainment at the Grand Hotel, Scarborough’s Victorian landmark overlooking South Bay. Settle into the lounge or ballroom for live vocals, quizzes or cabaret, and enjoy a sociable, relaxed atmosphere after days exploring the coast and moors.
This seaside tradition reflects the resort’s heyday of spa concerts and music halls, adding a gentle note of camaraderie to your stay. Expect simple, good-humoured performances that suit the setting and the season.
Historic York: Minster, Shambles & City Walls
Explore York on an optional excursion to York (additional cost, bookable on tour). Wander the crooked lanes of The Shambles, peek into independent boutiques and tearooms, and follow the River Ouse beneath medieval bridges.
Admire the soaring Gothic of York Minster from the square, or choose to step inside. Walk sections of the ancient city walls between gatehouses, and consider visits such as the JORVIK Viking Centre to deepen the city’s layered history.
Goathland Village on the North York Moors
Visit Goathland village, ringed by heather-clad moors and known as Aidensfield in Heartbeat filming locations. Stroll to the 19th-century station, recognisable as Harry Potter’s Hogsmeade Station, and breathe the clean upland air.
Time slows on the expansive open moorland: sheep graze the green, stone cottages cluster around a tiny green, and views roll toward deep valleys. It is an atmospheric snapshot of rural Yorkshire shaped by railways, weather and tradition.
Pickering Market Town & Heritage Railway Gateway
Explore the market town of Pickering, gateway to the North York Moors. Wander the Market Place and stone cottages, and pause at the heritage station where the North Yorkshire Moors Railway breathes steam into the air.
Glance up to Pickering Castle, a Norman sentinel over Ryedale, or step inside St Peter & St Paul’s to view rare medieval wall paintings. This visit mixes village life with living railway heritage, ideal for photos and a feel for how the moors shaped local trade.
