The lovely 13th-century Minster is well worth a visit, renowned for its medieval stone carvings and pretty stained glass, and there is also a range of lovely boutiques, cafés and pubs. For the perfect mix of town and coast, we then make our way to the charming seaside town of Hornsea. Browse the shops for some famous Hornsea pottery, enjoy a stroll on the Blue Flag beach or admire the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire, home to a whole host of bird species.
Scarborough, Heartbeat Country & York
Our first visit today takes us to the pretty village of Goathland, hidden away in the stunning North York Moors National Park. The village has attracted visitors since the 19th century. Still, Goathland’s popularity has soared since its appearance as Aidensfield in the hit TV series Heartbeat and its role in the Harry Potter films.
Next we travel to the charming coastal town of Whitby, famed for its connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and for its striking jet jewellery. Wander around the busy harbour before tackling the climb up to the atmospheric ruined abbey perched on the cliffs. Whitby was also once the home of the famous explorer Captain Cook, who lived here as an apprentice and is now immortalised as a local hero with a museum dedicated to his life and accomplishments and an impressive statue that looks out to sea.

The historic city of York awaits. Highlights include the beautiful York Minster, the JORVIK Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum, or you may like to wander around the ancient walls which surround the city before heading to the charming ‘Shambles’, a warren of narrow lanes and overhanging buildings dating back to medieval times.

There is plenty to see and do here with its sandy beaches, wonderful promenade and picturesque, bustling harbour as well as the Old Town, full of quaint shops and cafés. Next stop is the quaint resort of Filey, full of olde-worlde charm and boasting a five-mile stretch of sandy beach as well as some of the most spectacular sea views on the Yorkshire coast.

Beverley Minster & Hornsea Seaside
Discover historic Beverley, pausing at the soaring Gothic of Beverley Minster, renowned for medieval stone carvings and stained glass. Amble through cobbled lanes lined with market stalls, Georgian facades and inviting cafés in one of Yorkshire’s most characterful market towns and independent boutiques to browse.
At Hornsea, stroll the Blue Flag beach and promenade, or seek wildlife at Hornsea Mere, Yorkshire’s largest freshwater lake. Call into shops celebrating Hornsea pottery heritage while sea air and gentle surf underline the town’s unhurried charm and coastal views.
York City Highlights: Minster, Shambles & City Walls
Explore the walled city of York, from York Minster’s intricate Gothic stonework to the crooked timber-framed shops of The Shambles. Walk segments of the medieval city walls for elevated views across rooftops and lanes that chart layers of history from Roman Eboracum to Viking Jorvik.
Choose time for personal discoveries, perhaps the immersive JORVIK Viking Centre or the vast National Railway Museum, both centrally located. Pause beneath the Minster’s stained glass, sample a Yorkshire fat rascal, and let church bells and street buskers set the city’s distinctive rhythm.
Bridlington & Filey Seaside Resorts
Experience Yorkshire coast charm at Bridlington, where harbour and promenades frame wide sands backed by historic terraces. Wander the Old Town’s Georgian streets or linger for fish and chips as gulls wheel above and boats nod against the quay. Sea breezes set an easy pace.
Filey offers Filey’s five-mile sandy beach and the nature-rich headland of Filey Brigg, a favorite with seabirds and photographers. This excursion is at additional cost (currently £16pp) and is bookable on tour, offering a relaxed day focused on coastal views and traditional resort atmosphere.
Goathland ‘Heartbeat Country’ & Whitby Abbey Clifftop
Explore the moorland village of Goathland in the North York Moors National Park, a star turn as Heartbeat’s Aidensfield. Stroll past stone cottages and the village green, and see Goathland Station on the heritage North Yorkshire Moors Railway, famed for appearances in the Harry Potter films.
Whitby offers a harbour and a climb up the 199 Steps to the cliff-top ruins of Whitby Abbey, whose stark arches shaped Bram Stoker’s Gothic vision. Browse jet jewellery or trace Captain Cook’s story as sea breezes and North Sea panoramas frame the town.
