Insight Vacations

Meet your Travel Director and fellow small-group travellers over dinner with drinks in Lima. This hosted gathering offers a relaxed introduction to the people sharing your journey through Peru.

Conversation turns naturally to the country’s coastal capital, where colonial history and contemporary food culture meet. It is a chance to settle into the group before exploring the landscapes and traditions beyond the city.

Explore Lima’s colonial heart with a Local Specialist, taking in the Cathedral of Lima, Government Palace, Archbishop’s Palace and City Hall. Hear how the city became the centre of Spanish administration in South America.

These civic and religious landmarks stand around the historic centre’s grand squares, where ornate facades preserve the scale and ambition of the viceregal capital. Your guide brings context to the architecture and to the layers of Peruvian history behind it.

Visit Casa Aliaga, a historic Lima mansion associated with the same family for 17 generations. Explore an enduring private residence that offers a more intimate perspective on the city’s colonial heritage than its monumental public squares.

Founded in the early years of Spanish Lima, the house reflects centuries of changing domestic life and architectural taste. Its long family history gives this visit a distinctive human dimension within the capital’s historic centre.

Discover Museo Larco’s pre-Columbian collection with a Local Specialist in Lima’s Pueblo Libre district. Examine objects that illuminate the beliefs, artistry and daily lives of Peru’s ancient cultures, with expert guidance to help interpret what you see.

Enjoy regional Peruvian dishes at Café del Museo Larco, set in an 18th-century garden on the museum grounds. Bougainvillea-covered terraces and the setting of a former viceregal estate make lunch a complement to the cultural visit.

Take in the Sacred Valley’s Andean scenery on a sightseeing journey through the region surrounding Cusco. Pause at viewpoints to photograph steep mountainsides and the broad valley that has long supported communities along the Urubamba River.

The landscape provides a first look at the relationship between terrain, agriculture and settlement in the Inca heartland. This experience centres on the valley’s scenery and planned photo stops rather than the practical journey between destinations.

Visit the Maras Salt Mines with a Local Specialist and look across thousands of shallow pools stepping down a Sacred Valley hillside. Learn how mineral-rich spring water is channelled into the terraces and salt is harvested as it evaporates.

Used since pre-Inca times and still worked today, the pale, geometric pools reveal a practice sustained across generations. Their striking pattern is also a practical response to the valley’s water, sun and steep terrain.

Explore Moray’s concentric terraces on a high plateau northwest of Cusco. See how the circular depressions descend in carefully built levels, creating a striking example of Inca engineering in the Sacred Valley.

The site is widely believed to have helped the Incas study how crops responded to different conditions. Its changing elevations and sheltered terraces offer insight into the agricultural knowledge that helped sustain communities across varied Andean landscapes.

Meet a traditional Quechua weaver near Laguna Piuray for a private presentation of Andean textile techniques. Watch the craft at close range and learn how patterns, colours and methods carry meaning within local communities.

Textiles in the Andes can express personal and regional identity as well as practical skill. This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® visit connects you with a living tradition and directly supports the local weaver sharing her knowledge.

Experience a pachamanca lunch beside Laguna Piuray, with food cooked in the earth using hot stones. Local musicians accompany the meal, bringing the sounds of the Andes to this lakeside gathering.

Try playing the zampoña, a traditional Andean panpipe, with guidance from the musicians. The hands-on workshop adds a musical connection to a meal rooted in communal cooking practices and the region’s relationship with the land.

Explore the Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo with a Local Specialist, examining monumental terraces and stonework above a town whose surviving streets still follow an Inca layout. The site’s scale reveals the importance of this Sacred Valley settlement.

Visit a family home in the old town to hear about daily life in the village. The personal encounter complements the archaeological visit, connecting Ollantaytambo’s celebrated past with the community living among its historic streets.

Travel towards Machu Picchu Pueblo aboard IncaRail’s The Prime, enjoying an Andean-inspired tasting made with local ingredients and live music on board. Spacious seating provides a comfortable setting for the experience.

Watch the scenery change as the route follows the valley towards the cloud forest. The food and music make this more than a rail connection, offering a taste of regional culture while the mountain landscape unfolds outside.

Explore Machu Picchu with a Local Specialist in a small group. Walk among the 15th-century citadel’s precisely fitted stone walls and learn about its architecture, ceremonial spaces and dramatic setting high above the Urubamba Valley.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves evidence of Inca engineering amid cloud-forest peaks. The itinerary also provides time to experience Machu Picchu again at your own pace, with your Travel Director available to answer questions.

Walk through Cusco’s historic centre with a Local Specialist, visiting Plaza Mayor and seeing the celebrated 12-Angled Stone and Koricancha, once the Inca Empire’s most important temple.

Once the imperial capital, Cusco still reveals Inca masonry alongside Spanish colonial buildings. The walking tour helps you read those layers in the city’s streets, from the precision of its stonework to the public square at its heart.

Visit the Cusco Planetarium after hours to explore the southern sky through dome projections and stories of Inca constellations. Local Specialists explain the place of astronomy in Andean culture.

Learn how people interpreted patterns in the night sky and related them to life on earth. The visit includes telescope observation when conditions permit, giving this cultural introduction the possibility of a direct look at the stars above Cusco.

Explore the Inca sites above Cusco: Tambomachay, Puka Pukara and Qenqo, alongside Sacsayhuaman’s monumental zigzag walls. See how ceremonial spaces and imposing stonework occupy the hills overlooking the former imperial capital.

Each site offers a different perspective on Inca building and the landscape around Cusco. At Sacsayhuaman, immense, closely fitted stones make the skill of its builders especially tangible against the city below.

Choose to explore Cusco’s San Pedro Market with a Local Specialist. Browse stalls of colourful produce, regional grains and ingredients used in everyday Andean cooking while gaining an insight into the city’s food traditions.

Select essential food items to donate to a local community. This hands-on choice connects the market’s lively atmosphere with a practical contribution to families in need. It is one of two included activities offered at this point in the tour.

Choose to step inside Cusco Cathedral with a Local Specialist on Plaza de Armas. Admire gilded altars, carved woodwork and religious paintings, including a distinctly Peruvian interpretation of The Last Supper.

Built between 1560 and 1664 on the site of an Inca palace, the cathedral brings colonial art and Andean history into the same space. This is one of two included activities offered as a choice; the alternative is a San Pedro Market visit.

Join your fellow small-group travellers for dinner at Inka Grill in Cusco. Share conversation over Peruvian dishes described in the tour’s dining programme, from ceviche palteado to quinotto and ají de gallina.

The hosted meal is an opportunity to reflect together on the Andes and the places explored across Peru. Its local menu gives the gathering a sense of place beyond a standard hotel dinner.

Meet a local fisherman in Paracas and hear how small-scale fishing supports families on Peru’s south coast. Learn about working life at sea and the knowledge passed between generations.

This personal exchange explores the pressures traditional fishing communities face from industrial fleets. It offers a grounded perspective on Paracas beyond its beaches and wildlife, revealing how closely livelihoods and local identity remain tied to the ocean.

Visit Hacienda La Caravedo in the Ica region to learn how pisco is made and taste Peru’s national spirit. Discover traditional production methods at a distillery established in 1684.

Ica’s grape-growing landscape has long been associated with pisco. The visit connects the drink in your glass to the region’s agricultural and distilling heritage, while offering insight into the estate’s contemporary approach to production.

Explore a small museum in the Ica area displaying mummies, ceramics, textiles, fossils and other artefacts. See objects associated with the Inca and earlier cultures of the region.

The collections add human and historical context to Peru’s south-coast landscapes. Burial remains and everyday objects provide different ways to consider the beliefs, craftsmanship and lives of communities that shaped this part of the country over many centuries.

Visit Hacienda San José in Chincha, a 17th-century estate on Peru’s Afro-Peruvian south coast. See its historic house, baroque chapel and underground tunnels while learning about the estate’s past.

The visit addresses the role the hacienda played in Peru’s colonial-era slave economy. Its preserved spaces offer a setting for understanding this difficult history and its place in the wider story of the region.

Choose an Optional Experience at ChocoMuseo in Cusco to learn about cacao and the chocolate-making process. Discover how the raw ingredient becomes the chocolate enjoyed today.

This activity offers a food-focused alternative during your time in the city, with a closer look at an ingredient with deep roots in the Americas. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour; the precise activities offered will be confirmed locally.

Choose an Optional Experience to Rainbow Mountain for a journey into the high-altitude Andean landscape beyond Cusco. View the mountain’s bands of colour, formed by mineral-rich geological layers, against the surrounding peaks.

The excursion offers a landscape-focused alternative to exploring the city, with scenery markedly different from the Sacred Valley. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour; local conditions and the tour team will determine the practical details.
