Discover how the region’s vineyards and farming traditions shape its food and wine culture. With time to discuss the wines as you taste, this is a closer introduction to Mudgee than a simple cellar-door stop.
Nyngan Historic Railway Station Museum
Explore the museum in Nyngan’s historic railway station and uncover stories of pioneering life in inland New South Wales. The former station provides a fitting setting for learning about a town shaped by travel, trade and the demands of life far from the coast.
Rail connections helped regional communities move people and goods across long distances. This visit puts the surrounding outback landscape in human context through the experiences of those who settled and worked here.
Cobar Museum
Discover Cobar’s mining history at the Cobar Museum, where the town’s past offers insight into the people and industries of western New South Wales. Explore the story of a community closely tied to mineral discoveries and the work of extracting them.
Mining has long shaped Cobar’s identity, from its working landscape to its local heritage. The museum visit makes those connections tangible, giving you a deeper understanding of outback life beyond the mines themselves.
Fort Bourke Hill Lookout
Look out across Cobar’s Open Cut Mine from Fort Bourke Hill Lookout. The elevated vantage point reveals the scale of mining in this part of New South Wales, with the excavation set against a broad outback horizon.
See how industry has transformed the landscape around a town with a longstanding mining legacy. This scenic stop gives a visual perspective on the scale of the work described in Cobar’s local history.
White Cliffs Working Opal Mine
Descend into a working opal mine at White Cliffs, Australia’s oldest commercial opal field. Walk among the historic diggings and learn how miners continue to search for gemstones in this remote corner of New South Wales.
White Cliffs is especially known for white opal. Seeing the underground workings brings the town’s mining heritage into focus. The visit involves a descent of approximately 13.5 metres and walking along an unsealed path.
Broken Hill Guided Heritage Walk
Walk through Broken Hill with a guide and discover the Victorian and Art Deco architecture of this far-western city. Learn how a remote mining settlement grew into a place recognised for its heritage, art and distinctive outback character.
The streets tell a story that extends beyond the mines: civic ambition, changing fortunes and a creative community all have a place here. A guided walk helps connect the city’s buildings with the people who shaped them.
Broken Hill City Art Gallery
Visit Broken Hill City Art Gallery, the oldest regional art gallery in New South Wales. Explore an artistic side of a city often defined by its mining history and see why Broken Hill is also known as a centre for outback culture.
The gallery offers a different way to engage with the region: through the perspectives and creative work it brings together. It is a worthwhile counterpoint to the city’s industrial landmarks and heritage streets.
Living Desert Sculptures at Sunset
View the 12 sandstone sculptures at Broken Hill’s Living Desert and Sculptures site, set high above the surrounding country. Take in the artworks and expansive views towards the Barrier Ranges in the changing light of evening.
The sculpted stone and open landscape create a setting unlike a conventional gallery. As sunset shifts the colours of the outback, there is time to appreciate both the artists’ work and the scale of the country around it.
Silverton Heritage Streets & Gaol Museum
Explore the heritage streets of Silverton, a former silver-mining settlement near Broken Hill, and visit the Silverton Gaol & Historical Museum. Wander through a town whose surviving buildings evoke its busy mining past.
Inside the former gaol, discover colonial artefacts, early mining equipment and stories of outback pioneers. Together, the streets and museum reveal how this once-thriving settlement became the quiet, character-filled place visitors encounter today.

Shear Outback Live Shearing Experience
Watch a live shearing demonstration at Shear Outback and learn the language and working traditions of the shearing shed. The experience offers a close-up look at the skill behind an industry central to Australia’s pastoral history.
