Contiki

Ride the Fjellheisen cable car to the granite ledge of Mount Storsteinen, 421 metres above sea level, for sweeping views over Tromsøya, the Arctic Cathedral and the silvery Tromsøysundet strait. Under the polar night’s blue glow, crisp air and snow-cloaked peaks frame a perfect vantage for photos and quiet contemplation.

Known as the Gateway to the Arctic, Tromsø launched generations of polar expeditions; this panorama shows the city’s island setting and surrounding summits like Tromsdalstinden. Weather permitting, it’s a superb lookout for twilight colours and potential auroral arcs, typically scheduled early in the tour.

Board the Hurtigruten coastal ship and cruise Norway’s wild coast, threading between headlands and fjords while you rotate between deck strolls, the panoramic lounge and the sauna. As darkness gathers, watch for the Northern Lights rippling above snowy ridgelines with the Barents Sea as your foreground.

Operating since 1893, this working voyage links remote harbours and fishing communities. Sail through Magerøysundet and past the sculpted Finnkirka sea-cliff shrine, scan for sea eagles, and feel the cadence of everyday coastal life from a warm window seat or the open deck.

Glide silently on a hybrid-electric boat through ice-edged fjords and narrow straits around Tromsø, with low engine noise revealing the creak of ice and calls of seabirds. Scan the water for humpback whales and orcas, and the skerries for seals and white-tailed eagles.

The winter herring migration draws apex predators close to shore, creating prime viewing from warm indoor lounges and wind-protected decks. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; routes adapt to wildlife movements and conditions for responsible encounters.

Journey to the North Cape across windswept Magerøya to reach the Nordkapp plateau at 71°N and stand beside the globe monument above 307-metre cliffs. When skies open, the Barents Sea stretches steel-grey to the horizon and the Arctic air bites with exhilarating clarity.

Explore North Cape Hall’s exhibits, panoramic cinema and tiny cliff-side chapel while learning about early visitors who braved this headland. In winter, road convoys run when conditions permit. This excursion is subject to availability, at additional cost, and bookable on tour from Honningsvåg.

Mush a team of eager huskies through snow-draped forests and frozen fens near Kirkenes, riding two to a sled as the runners hiss over compacted snow. With guidance from an expert musher, settle under reindeer skins and feel the sled surge with each spirited pull.

Dog sledding has long been a lifeline in Finnmark; today it offers an intimate, low-impact way to experience Arctic stillness. Expect time to greet the dogs and warm up with hot berry juice after your glide. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Visit a Sápmi camp outside Tromsø to feed reindeer by hand and hear stories of seasonal herding before you gather in a lavvu (traditional tent) with a hot drink. Hosts share daily rhythms shaped by Arctic light, snow and migration.

Learn about joik singing, duodji handicrafts and the cross-border homeland of the Sámi across northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER experience supports local livelihoods; it is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Steam in a wood-fired sauna beside the fjord before taking a polar plunge via safe ladders into the near-freezing sea. Alternating heat and chill floods the senses—cheeks flush, breath quickens, and mountain silhouettes sharpen in the crisp air.

Embracing friluftsliv—life in the open air—is a Norwegian winter ritual. Facilities include towels, heated changing rooms and staff oversight to keep things comfortable and safe. This invigorating experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour in Tromsø.
