Northumberland, Hadrian’s Wall, Holy Island & Alnwick Castle
We start with a visit to the historic Holy Island of Lindisfarne, lying just a few miles off the Northumberland coast. Only accessible twice a day at low tide, this beautifully unspoilt island is where Christianity first took hold in Britain and is also home to a picturesque 16th-century castle and an array of wildlife. Featured in the hugely popular TV series Downton Abbey and still home to the Duke of Northumberland and his family, our next stop of Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England. The lavish State Rooms contain an eclectic array of furniture, ceramics and art collected by the Percy family for over 700 years.

Hadrian’s Wall Panoramic Drive & Chesters Roman Fort
Trace the Roman frontier on a guided tour of Hadrian’s Wall, travelling the scenic Military Road past rugged crags and open moorland. Pause at vantage points to imagine legionaries on patrol before continuing to Chesters Roman Fort, beautifully set above the River North Tyne and famed as the best-preserved Roman cavalry fort in Britain.
Discover the fort’s bathhouse foundations, barracks outlines and commanding gateways that anchored the empire’s edge after AD 122. The on-site museum’s inscriptions and altar stones illuminate daily life of soldiers posted far from home, bringing the Wall’s strategic purpose and human stories into vivid focus.
Holy Island of Lindisfarne Tidal Crossing & Heritage Walk
Cross the causeway at low tide to Holy Island of Lindisfarne, where sea and sky frame a landscape steeped in early Christian tradition. Wander the windswept harbour, view the evocative ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, and take in the coastal silhouette of Lindisfarne Castle perched on its whinstone outcrop.
Hear how monks founded a monastery here in 635, producing the famed Lindisfarne Gospels before Viking raids reshaped the island’s story. The shoreline teems with seabirds and salt-tinged air, offering time to reflect amid shifting sands and centuries of devotion.
Alnwick Castle State Rooms & Noble Heritage
Explore Alnwick Castle, the second largest inhabited castle in England and ancestral seat of the Percy family. Step into the lavish State Rooms to admire gilded ceilings, fine art and porcelain assembled by the Dukes of Northumberland over seven centuries.
Outside, imposing battlements recall borderland power struggles, while film connections—most famously to Harry Potter and Downton Abbey—add a modern cultural layer. The blend of living heritage and cinematic familiarity makes this a rare chance to experience a working noble residence with deep roots in English history.
Durham City Exploration & Cathedral Close
Discover the UNESCO ensemble of Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle crowning a wooded peninsula above the River Wear. Stroll cobbled lanes lined with collegiate buildings, independent shops and café doorways that open to views across looping bridges.
Admire the cathedral’s towering Romanesque nave and tranquil cloisters—settings that have inspired pilgrims and scholars for centuries. This experience is offered at additional cost and is bookable on tour; you’ll have time to explore the historic heart at your own pace, with optional entry to sights as you choose.
