Insight Vacations

Visit Woodstock’s historic village before exploring Billings Farm and Museum, a working dairy farm devoted to Vermont’s agricultural heritage. See Jersey cows and step inside the restored 1890 farmhouse to learn about family life and farm work.

Woodstock’s village streets and the farm’s barns place rural history in a living landscape. Exhibits on butter-making, animal care and seasonal routines show how farming communities adapted their work to New England’s changing year.

Meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers over a hosted dinner at your Boston hotel. It is an opportunity to settle in, share introductions and hear more about the landscapes and communities that shape New England.

Boston provides a fitting setting for the gathering: a city where colonial streets, working waterfronts and neighbourhood food traditions sit close together. The dinner is included as a social experience, rather than simply a meal.

Explore Boston with your Travel Director, following part of the red-brick Freedom Trail through streets associated with the American Revolution. See Boston Common and other historic sights, including the Old Corner Bookstore and the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown.

Take in the contrasting character of Back Bay and the North End, Boston’s Little Italy. The guided experience connects the city’s revolutionary landmarks with the neighbourhoods that continue to give it its distinctive street life.

Choose a visit to the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge as one of two included Berkshires experiences. Study original sketches and paintings in a collection that includes familiar images created for The Saturday Evening Post, alongside changing exhibitions of American illustration.

Rockwell’s carefully observed scenes capture humour, aspiration and everyday life in 20th-century America. This is an included choice, not an additional-cost excursion; travellers select it instead of the guided Chesterwood visit.

Choose a guided tour of Chesterwood in Stockbridge as one of two included Berkshires experiences. Explore the summer home, studio and grounds of Daniel Chester French, whose best-known work is the seated Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial.

See where French developed monumental figures, surrounded by plaster studies and the tools of his craft. His studio’s movable floor helped him assess sculpture in natural light. This is an included choice, not an additional-cost excursion; travellers select it instead of the Norman Rockwell Museum.

Browse the Vermont Country Store in Weston, where shelves bring together traditional household goods and regional foods. Look for Vermont cheeses, maple treats and the store’s nostalgic assortment of sweets and pantry staples.

The visit offers a glimpse of the state’s general-store tradition: places that have long served as both practical shops and community gathering points. It is a chance to encounter Vermont flavours and old-fashioned retail character in a small village setting.

Visit Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks near Montpelier to learn how sap tapped from maple trees is boiled into syrup. Taste sugar on snow: warm syrup poured over snow or shaved ice until it thickens into a chewy, maple-rich treat.

Maple sugaring is a longstanding Vermont tradition tied to the late-winter thaw. The tasting reveals the syrup’s deep caramel flavour and the playful custom of serving the sweet treat with a doughnut and pickle.

Tour von Trapp Brewing at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe and learn how the family brought Austrian-style lager traditions to Vermont. Enjoy an Alpine-inspired dinner paired with a lager brewed on site.

The lodge was established by the von Trapp family, whose story inspired The Sound of Music, after they left Austria. Against a Green Mountains backdrop, the experience connects their family history with the malt-led flavours and food traditions they carried to a new home.

Walk the fields of Bread & Butter Farm in Shelburne with your hosts, following paths through cultivated ground, woodland, pasture and marshland. Learn how regenerative farming practices support the land, and gather herbs and blooms connected to the day’s meal.

Chef Tessa, a seventh-generation Vermonter, shares the local traditions behind seasonal sourcing. A farm-to-table lunch by Blossom Whole Food Kitchen gives the visit a tangible finish, bringing the working landscape directly to the plate.

Travel the Kancamagus Scenic Byway through New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest. This 34.5-mile stretch of Route 112 follows the Swift River and climbs towards Kancamagus Pass, with views of granite streambeds and hillsides coloured by autumn maples.

With no commercial development along the route, the focus stays on river, rock and mountain forest. The journey is a scenic experience in its own right, revealing the scale and varied colours of the White Mountains.

Explore New England’s autumn ecology with a local naturalist near North Conway. Listen for calls in the trees, scan the canopy and learn how regional plants and wildlife respond as temperatures fall and the seasons change.

This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® experience looks beyond the colour of the foliage to the living systems beneath it. The visit supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land, linking close observation of the landscape with its conservation.

Explore Crawford Notch’s mountain scenery, where steep White Mountain slopes frame the route. Stop for photographs at Silver Cascade, whose water runs down Mount Jackson beside Route 302, and take in the valley views from Bretton Woods.

Look towards Mount Washington, the Northeast’s highest peak at 6,288 feet. Its summit may stand sharply above the neighbouring ridges or vanish into cloud, giving this scenic outing a vivid sense of the region’s changeable mountain weather.

Walk with your Travel Director to Diana’s Baths in the White Mountain National Forest near North Conway. Follow an easy-paced trail through the trees to a series of small waterfalls and rounded pools formed by Lucy Brook.

Listen as the sound of running water grows clearer and watch it slip over smooth stone from one basin to another. The site combines a gentle woodland walk with a close-up view of the streams that shape the White Mountains.

Follow Kennebunkport’s coastal roads towards Ocean Avenue, where Atlantic views open between the pines. See surf break against dark granite, watch for working lobster boats and pass Walker’s Point, the rocky-headland summer retreat of former President George H. W. Bush.

The outing presents a distinctive stretch of southern Maine coast, where fishing activity, weathered rock and shoreline homes occupy the same view. Its appeal lies in observing the working waterfront alongside the open sea.

Walk Portland’s Old Port, following brick streets downhill towards Commercial Street and the harbour. See boats beside wooden piers and working wharves, where ropes, fishing gear and the movement of the tide remain part of the waterfront scene.

The district’s historic streets sit close to an active port, making this more than a picturesque harbour visit. It offers a chance to experience Maine’s maritime character in the everyday sights and sounds of the city.

Enjoy a Maine lobster dinner in Portland, cracking the steamed shell and dipping the tender meat into melted butter. Share the meal with fellow travellers over a regional speciality closely associated with the state’s fishing communities.

Lobster is woven into the identity of Maine’s coast, from the boats in its harbours to the tables where the catch is served. The hands-on ritual of opening the shell makes this a distinctly local dining experience, not simply an included dinner.
