Full Day

Lake Lucerne & the Beautiful Swiss Alps

This morning, we take a short scenic drive along the road that hugs the northern shore of Lake Lucerne and spend some free time in the lakeside resort town of Brunnen, a lovely spot for a waterfront stroll or a bite to eat before we return to Weggis for an afternoon at leisure. In Weggis, you may like to visit the hotel spa, perhaps enjoy an extended boat trip, swim or sunbathe at Lido Weggis or just soak up the beautiful scenery.

Alternatively, join our optional afternoon excursion to breathtaking Stanserhorn. Our journey starts in Stans with a ride on a nostalgic funicular, followed by the world’s first open-top cable car to the summit of the Stanserhorn. Once here, admire the stunning views over Lake Lucerne and countless alpine peaks, then perhaps enjoy a Swiss dish at the revolving restaurant before we make our way back down.

Lake Lucerne & the Beautiful Swiss Alps

Our coach takes us directly to Lucerne railway station, where we board the famous Luzern-Interlaken Express for an exciting ride through impressive landscapes, lush valleys, aquamarine lakes and the quintessential villages of the Bernese Oberland.

On arrival in Interlaken, nestled between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun and set against towering peaks, we have free time to explore the resort and find lunch at leisure. Watch the paragliders here, stroll along the Hoheweg promenade, lined with shops, restaurants and cafés, or you may like to enjoy the funicular ride to Harder Kulm to for panoramic views.

Next, we journey to Lauterbrunnen, a small village in a truly breathtaking glacial valley setting. The coach can go no further, so while our luggage transfer to hotel is handled, we have a little time in Lauterbrunnen to see the village centre. For an easy but iconic photo spot, head to the Staubbach Falls viewpoint, which captures the town’s charming church, the surrounding dramatic peaks, verdant valley floor and the cascading Staubbach waterfall itself, the highest free-falling waterfall in Switzerland. Our journey from here to the car-free village of Wengen is by cog-wheel railway – it may only be a 15-minute journey but the stunning panoramas of the valley below are mesmerising (if you can, choose a seat on the right side for the best views).

Lake Lucerne & the Beautiful Swiss Alps

Spend the day as you please in Wengen, browsing the shops or admiring the spectacular scenery at the town’s best viewpoint – St Bernard’s Church. Or for the more adventurous, make the most of Wengen’s gateway to a whole alpine playground. There is so much to choose from: travel to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe for breathtaking views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks (pre-booking required), catch the stunning train to Kleine Scheidegg and discover beautiful hiking options such as the Panorama Trail, enjoy further exploration of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, including the Trummelbach Falls (a series of cascades entirely hidden inside a mountain!) or at the end of the valley, visit Murren to ascend to the summit of James Bond-famous Schiltorn or Gimmelwald to experience an authentic Swiss village where time seems to have stood still.

Lake Lucerne & the Beautiful Swiss Alps

Our day begins with a short scenic gondola ride from Wengen to Männlichen, known for its awe-inspiring panoramic views of the Lauterbrunnen valley and the surrounding peaks, including the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. As well as the scenery, admire the vibrant alpine flowers that adorn the area at this time of year, choose to stroll to 1.2km-hike to the Männlichen Summit, known as the Royal Walk, or enjoy some refreshments at the café.

From here, we catch another gondola on the other side of the mountain to pretty Grindelwald, surrounded by towering peaks of the Bernese Oberland region. Enjoy some free time in this authentically Swiss village, with its traditional chalets and cosy cafés, visit the impressive Gletscherschlucht (Glacier Gorge) or you may like to catch the cable car to one of the country’s most popular attractions, the First Mountain, home to a thrilling cliff walk. Later, the coach takes us back to Lauterbrunnen so we can once again catch the cog-wheel railway to Wengen.

Lake Lucerne & the Beautiful Swiss Alps

Choose to spend the day as you please, soaking up the fresh air in Wengen, or join our optional  excursion to discover more of this beautiful region. After catching the cog-wheel railway down to the valley floor, our coach takes us to Bern, Switzerland’s beautiful UNESCO-listed capital city. Stroll the Old Town and explore the labyrinth of medieval covered arcades filled with unique cellar shops and cafés, but be sure to time your visit to the 13th-century astronomical Zytglogge clock tower to see its mechanical show on the hour, every hour – with suitably Swiss efficiency! There is lots more to see, including Bern Minster, the Swiss Parliament building, the Einstein Museum (housed in his former home) and the enchanting oasis of the Rose Garden.

Next is Thun, a gorgeous little spot with a historic Old Town, unique boutiques and vibrant town squares. Situated where the turquoise waters River Aare meet the expansive Lake Thun, strolling the waterways across covered wooden bridges here is a real delight. Another highlight is Thun Castle, a 12th-century fortress perched on a hill, offering far-reaching views and housing a museum charting the region’s history.

Lake Lucerne & the Beautiful Swiss Alps

We begin our journey home, enjoying the lovely scenery along the way to our overnight hotel in France, where dinner is included.

Lake Lucerne & the Beautiful Swiss Alps

After breakfast, we check out of the hotel and head to Calais for our journey home on LeShuttle.

Explore Colmar’s historic Old Town, where timber-framed houses, cobbled lanes and flower-lined canals reflect the character of France’s Alsace region. Wander towards La Petite Venise, the picturesque canal-side quarter, or browse the streets around the town’s market.

Colmar’s architecture bears traces of its French and German heritage, from medieval merchants’ houses to richly decorated Renaissance facades. This included stop offers time to appreciate those details and sample local specialities at your own pace.

Cross Lake Lucerne by public boat from Weggis to the city of Lucerne, with mountain slopes and waterfront buildings framing the approach. Once ashore, explore the Old Town independently and walk across the Chapel Bridge, the city’s restored 14th-century wooden landmark.

Painted facades and small squares give Lucerne’s historic centre its distinctive character, while the lake remains close at hand. The included boat crossing makes the journey part of the experience; time in the city is yours to shape.

Follow a scenic drive along Lake Lucerne’s northern shore, where the road traces the water beneath wooded hills and mountain ridges. Stop in Brunnen, a lakeside resort town with a waterfront promenade and views across the lake.

Brunnen sits near the meeting of Lake Lucerne’s waterways, giving its shoreline a broad alpine backdrop. This included outing pairs the changing views from the coach with time to stroll by the water or explore the town independently.

Ride the Luzern–Interlaken Express through central Switzerland, passing lakes, green valleys and villages beneath the Bernese Oberland peaks. This included rail journey offers a close-up view of the landscape from the comfort of the train.

The route links Lucerne with Interlaken across a changing sequence of mountain and waterside scenery. Look out for aquamarine lakes and steep alpine slopes as the train winds towards the resort town between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun.

Explore Interlaken, the alpine resort set between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. Walk the Hoheweg promenade, browse its shops and cafés, or watch paragliders descend against a backdrop of high peaks.

Interlaken has long been a gateway to the Bernese Oberland, and its broad open spaces make the mountain setting easy to appreciate. This included visit gives you independent time in the town; activities such as the Harder Kulm funicular are personal choices, not part of the excursion.

Visit Lauterbrunnen, a village on the floor of a glacial valley enclosed by sheer cliffs and alpine peaks. Explore the village centre and seek out a view of Staubbach Falls, which drops dramatically from the rock face above.

The waterfall’s fine spray and the valley’s steep walls make this one of the Bernese Oberland’s most recognisable scenes. This included stop offers time to take in the setting and photograph the falls; it does not include entry to other valley attractions.

Climb by cogwheel railway from Lauterbrunnen to the car-free mountain village of Wengen. During the short ascent, watch the valley floor recede as the train curves above meadows and beneath the surrounding peaks.

Rail access is part of what gives Wengen its peaceful character: the village sits high above the road network, overlooking the Lauterbrunnen Valley. This included journey is both a distinctive way to reach Wengen and a chance to enjoy wide valley panoramas along the way.

Ride the gondola from Wengen to Männlichen for expansive views across the Lauterbrunnen Valley and towards the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. At the top, take time to admire the mountain panorama and, in season, the alpine flowers.

Männlichen’s elevated position makes it a natural viewpoint in the Bernese Oberland. Travellers who fancy a walk can follow the short Royal Walk towards the summit, while others can enjoy the scenery from around the gondola station.

Descend by gondola towards Grindelwald and explore this mountain village independently. Traditional chalets, cafés and a dramatic ring of peaks give its streets a distinctly Bernese Oberland setting.

Grindelwald lies beneath the north face of the Eiger and has a long history as a base for alpine exploration. The included gondola journey and village visit let you experience that landscape from above and at street level; attractions such as Glacier Gorge or Grindelwald First are not included.

Ascend Stanserhorn on an optional excursion that pairs a nostalgic funicular from Stans with the open-top CabriO cable car. At the summit, take in views over Lake Lucerne and a sweep of alpine peaks, with time to enjoy the mountain surroundings.

The open upper deck brings fresh mountain air and unobstructed views to the cable-car ride. This excursion costs £79 per person in addition to the tour price and is bookable on tour; food and drinks at the summit are personal expenses.

Discover two contrasting Swiss towns on an optional excursion to Bern and Thun. In Bern, explore the UNESCO-listed Old Town’s covered arcades and look for the medieval Zytglogge clock tower. In Thun, stroll beside the Aare and through the historic centre beneath its hilltop castle.

Bern’s sandstone streets reflect centuries as Switzerland’s capital, while Thun’s bridges and waterways connect it to Lake Thun. The excursion costs £29 per person in addition to the tour price and is bookable on tour; attraction entry is not stated as included.
