Additional information

Explore Lake Naivasha by boat, watching for hippos surfacing in the freshwater and African fish eagles overhead. From the water, take in the lake’s birdlife and the acacia-lined shores of the Great Rift Valley.

Naivasha’s watery habitat offers a change of perspective from a vehicle-based safari. Keep your eyes on the shoreline and sky as well as the water: the appeal lies in observing wildlife within a living lakeside landscape.

Visit a Maasai village near the Maasai Mara and meet members of the community. Learn about customs and daily life, including the long-standing importance of cattle, and hear about the jumping dance associated with Maasai ceremonial tradition.

This hosted encounter offers a cultural perspective on a region often viewed primarily through its wildlife. It is an opportunity to listen to local voices and gain a closer understanding of the community’s traditions and life in the Rift Valley.

Explore Ol Pejeta Conservancy after dark on an optional night game drive. Return to the wildlife habitat with a guide for a different view of the bush, listening for activity and watching for animals that become more active at night.

Darkness changes the familiar grassland and woodland into a landscape experienced through sound and focused sightings. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; sightings depend on wildlife movement and cannot be guaranteed.

Search for wildlife on a game drive through Nairobi National Park, where grassland and acacia bush lie remarkably close to the Kenyan capital. Watch for animals moving across the plains, with the city skyline sometimes visible beyond them.

Established in 1946, the park protects a distinctive patch of savannah on Nairobi’s doorstep. Its contrast of open habitat and urban backdrop makes this a striking introduction to Kenya’s wildlife and the challenges of conserving it near a growing city.

  • 8 Dinner (D)
  • 8 Breakfast (B)
  • 7 Lunch (L)
  • Maasai Mara National Reserve: Visit a Maasai village for a closer look at one of East Africa’s best-known pastoral communities, whose traditions have long been tied to cattle, seasonal movement and life across the Rift Valley. As you meet members of the community, you’ll learn more about customs, daily life and the jumping dance associated with Maasai ceremonial tradition.

Insight Vacations

  • Top-rated dining, from farm-to-table to local restaurants
  • Coach and 4 x 4 safari vehicle travel
  • Premium regional accommodation

Meet your Driver Guide and fellow small-group travellers over dinner in Nairobi. This hosted gathering offers a chance to get acquainted and hear about the wildlife landscapes and conservation work at the heart of your Kenya journey.

In a capital that serves as a gateway to East Africa’s safari country, the conversation is part of the experience: share your interests, ask questions and begin to discover the places you will explore together.

Watch rescued elephant calves at their midday milk feed and mud bath at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi nursery, often called the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. Hear the individual stories of the young elephants as keepers introduce them.

Set within Nairobi National Park, the nursery is part of a wider programme that cares for orphaned elephants with the aim of returning them to the wild. Seeing the calves at close range brings the patience and practical work of wildlife rehabilitation into focus.

Dine in the gardens of Karen Blixen Garden and Cottages in Nairobi’s Karen district, close to the former home of the writer whose years in Kenya inspired Out of Africa. The garden setting gives this hosted lunch a connection to the area’s literary history.

Hear more about Blixen’s coffee farm and the colonial-era story of this part of Nairobi. The meal offers time to consider the people and history behind a place known internationally through her writing.

Visit the Karen Blixen Museum, housed in the Nairobi home where the Danish writer lived while managing a coffee farm. Explore the property associated with her account of life in Kenya, later published as Out of Africa.

The house and its setting offer a tangible view of Blixen’s years here, while also opening a window onto the complex colonial history surrounding her story. It is a literary landmark rooted in a real landscape and a particular period of Kenyan history.

Take in the landmarks of central Nairobi, including the Parliament Buildings, Kenyatta Avenue, Government Square and the Kenyatta International Convention Centre. The sightseeing route also passes City Market and University Way, revealing several sides of the capital beyond its safari gateway reputation.

Look out for the mix of civic buildings, commercial streets and everyday activity that shapes Nairobi’s centre. This orientation provides a broader sense of the city’s role as Kenya’s political, cultural and economic hub.

Enjoy a three-course farm-to-table dinner at Shamba Cafe in Nairobi’s Loresho district. Dine in the gardens of a working farm, where herbs, vegetables and flowers are grown on site and help shape the menu.

The setting offers a quieter perspective on the capital: planted beds and garden paths replace the bustle of its central streets. This is a dining experience built around the produce and atmosphere of its immediate surroundings.

Explore Ol Pejeta Conservancy on an afternoon game drive through open grassland and acacia woodland, searching for plains game, birdlife and some of the reserve’s rarer species. Pause for a sundowner in the bush as softer light spreads across the Laikipia landscape.

With views towards Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta is known for its wildlife protection work, including rhino conservation. The drive pairs the anticipation of a safari with a chance to take in the scale and stillness of the conservancy.

Meet Najin and Fatu at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the world’s last two northern white rhinos. Hear from a ranger about their arrival in Kenya in 2009 and the round-the-clock protection that supports their care.

The visit brings an urgent conservation story into sharp focus. Learn how scientific efforts are seeking a future for the subspecies, while seeing the animals at the centre of that work. This experience supports the protection of life on land.

Visit Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Ol Pejeta Conservancy to see chimpanzees rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. It is the only place in Kenya where these great apes can be seen, making the visit a distinct part of the conservancy’s wildlife story.

Opened in 1993 with the help of Dr Jane Goodall, the sanctuary provides long-term refuge and care. Its work highlights a different side of conservation from a game drive: the sustained commitment needed to protect individual animals.

Enjoy a farm-to-table lunch at Ranch House Bistro beside Lake Naivasha. Taste dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, including produce from the property’s own farm, in a setting close to the water.

Papyrus-fringed shores and abundant birdlife give this part of the Great Rift Valley a gentler character than the open safari plains. The lunch makes that lakeside setting part of the dining experience, with local produce at the centre of the table.

Walk with a guide on Crescent Island, choosing an on-foot wildlife experience beside Lake Naivasha. Look for zebra, giraffe and antelope moving across its open grassland, with the lake and Rift Valley scenery around you.

Exploring at walking pace changes how you notice the landscape: animal tracks, movement and distance become more immediate than they are from a safari vehicle. This is one of two included Insight Choice activities at Lake Naivasha.

Join a guided birdwatching walk through the acacia-dotted grounds of Naivasha Sopa Lodge. Look for fish eagles, pelicans, kingfishers, herons and cormorants among the species drawn to the Lake Naivasha environment.

Birding on foot encourages a closer look at the colours, calls and movements of the lodge’s wildlife-rich setting. The walk is one of two included Insight Choice activities, offering a bird-focused alternative to the guided Crescent Island wildlife walk.

Search for wildlife on game drives across the Maasai Mara, including an afternoon drive and morning and afternoon exploration. Travel through wide grasslands and riverine forest, watching for big cats, plains game and members of the Big Five.

The Mara River helps shape this celebrated ecosystem, whose varied habitats support a rich concentration of species. Changing light and repeated drives offer different opportunities to observe animal behaviour, from activity across the open plains to movement near the trees.

Dine at a private bush barbecue in the Maasai Mara, reserved for your small group. Enjoy an open-air meal after dark, with firelight around the table and the sounds of the reserve carrying through the evening.

Rather than a standard camp dinner, this hosted meal places the Mara’s night-time atmosphere at the heart of the experience. The setting invites you to linger over food and conversation while the surrounding landscape takes on a different character.

Ride on horseback through the grounds of Naivasha Sopa Lodge for an optional way to explore its spacious lakeside setting. Travel at an unhurried pace through a landscape where giraffe, waterbuck and monkeys are often seen.

Horseback travel offers a different perspective on the lodge’s wildlife-rich grounds and acacia-dotted scenery. Animal sightings remain unpredictable, but the ride is an opportunity to experience the surroundings beyond the lodge paths. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Explore Hell’s Gate National Park on an optional excursion from Lake Naivasha. Discover a Rift Valley landscape known for dramatic cliffs, volcanic formations and routes suited to walking and cycling.

The park’s geology offers a striking contrast to Naivasha’s calm freshwater shores, with rock faces and open scenery revealing the forces that shaped this part of Kenya. Specific activities depend on the excursion arrangements. This visit is at additional cost and bookable on tour.
