Additional information

Visit the Karen Blixen Museum in the former home of the Danish author whose years in Kenya inspired Out of Africa. Explore the house and its setting, and learn about Blixen’s coffee farm and life in this part of Nairobi.

Lunch in the gardens of Karen Blixen Garden and Cottages extends the visit beyond the museum. The leafy surroundings offer space to consider both Blixen’s literary legacy and the colonial history within which her story unfolded.

Search for wildlife on an afternoon game drive through Ol Pejeta Conservancy’s open grassland and acacia woodland. Look out for plains game, birdlife and the species protected in this Laikipia landscape, with views towards Mount Kenya when conditions are clear.

Pause for a sundowner in the bush as softer light falls across the conservancy. Ol Pejeta is home to the Big Five and a major black rhino sanctuary, making the drive an introduction to both its wildlife and conservation work.

Explore Lake Naivasha by boat, watching for hippos at the water’s surface and birds along the shore. African fish eagles may circle overhead as the boat moves across this freshwater lake in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley.

Acacia woodland and papyrus-fringed edges frame a wildlife experience different from a game drive on the plains. Viewing the lake from the water brings its resident animals and rich birdlife into focus at close range.

Head into Ol Pejeta Conservancy on a night game drive for a different view of its wildlife-rich plains and woodland. Explore after dark, when the landscape changes character and there is a chance to look for animals active outside daylight hours.

This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour. It complements the included afternoon drive by revealing the conservancy under night skies, with sightings dependent on wildlife movements and conditions.

  • 11 Dinner (D)
  • 11 Breakfast (B)
  • 8 Lunch (L)
  • Maasai Mara National Reserve: Visit a Maasai village for a closer look at one of East Africa’s best-known pastoral communities, whose traditions have long been tied to cattle, seasonal movement and life across the Rift Valley. As you meet members of the community, you’ll learn more about customs, daily life and the jumping dance associated with Maasai ceremonial tradition.

Insight Vacations

  • Top-rated dining, from farm-to-table to local restaurants
  • 4 & 5-star stays
  • Coach, 4 x 4 safari vehicle travel, and select flights

Meet your Driver Guide and fellow small group travellers over dinner in Nairobi. This hosted gathering offers a chance to get acquainted and hear about the wildlife landscapes and coastal traditions that feature in the journey.

Kenya’s capital is a meeting point for travellers heading to the country’s conservancies and national reserves. Sharing a table here gives the group a relaxed introduction before the safari begins.

Explore Nairobi National Park on a game drive, following tracks through grassland and acacia bush in search of wildlife. The park’s open plains offer a striking sight: animals moving through a protected landscape with the capital’s skyline in the distance.

Established in 1946, it was Kenya’s first national park. Its proximity to central Nairobi makes this a distinctive introduction to safari, bringing the contrast between a busy modern city and wild habitat sharply into view.

Watch orphaned elephants gather for their midday milk feed and mud bath at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi nursery. Hear the stories of individual calves as keepers explain the care they receive and the challenges that brought them to the nursery.

Founded by Daphne Sheldrick, the trust is known for its work rescuing and rehabilitating young elephants. Seeing the calves at close range gives this conservation visit a personal dimension while revealing the long-term commitment involved in their care.

See the landmarks at the centre of Nairobi on a city sightseeing tour. Take in the Parliament Buildings, Kenyatta Avenue, Government Square, the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, City Market and University Way.

These streets bring together civic institutions, commerce and everyday city life. The tour provides a broader picture of Kenya’s capital beyond its safari gateway role, from its government quarter to the activity around its central market.

Dine on a three-course farm-to-table menu at Shamba Cafe in Nairobi’s Loresho district. Set in the gardens of a working farm, the cafe grows herbs, vegetables and flowers on site, bringing the source of some ingredients into view.

Enjoy an evening meal surrounded by greenery on the edge of the capital. The garden setting and produce-led approach offer a distinct contrast to Nairobi’s busy centre and a closer connection to the ingredients on the table.

Visit Najin and Fatu, the world’s last two northern white rhinos, at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Hear their story from a ranger and learn about the security, veterinary care and scientific efforts focused on the subspecies’ future.

The rhinos arrived in Kenya in 2009 and live under round-the-clock protection. This close conservation encounter makes the stakes of species loss tangible, while showing how Ol Pejeta’s work brings together rangers, researchers and long-term animal care.

Visit Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary within Ol Pejeta Conservancy to see chimpanzees rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Learn why the sanctuary provides ongoing refuge and care for animals that cannot simply be returned to the wild.

Opened in 1993 with support from the Jane Goodall Institute, Sweetwaters is the only place in Kenya where chimpanzees can be seen. Its work reveals a different side of the conservancy’s mission alongside its protection of native wildlife.

Enjoy a farm-to-table lunch beside Lake Naivasha at Ranch House Bistro. Dishes feature locally sourced ingredients, including produce from the property’s own farm, served in a setting close to the Rift Valley lake.

Naivasha’s papyrus-edged waters and abundant birdlife give the meal a strong sense of place. It is a chance to slow down over regional produce while experiencing a quieter, greener side of Kenya’s wildlife landscape.

Walk with a guide on Crescent Island, choosing an on-foot wildlife experience as your included Lake Naivasha activity. Look for zebra, giraffe and antelope roaming the island’s open grassland, with views across the lake and surrounding Rift Valley scenery.

Without the frame of a safari vehicle, the pace and perspective change: tracks, grazing animals and the shape of the landscape become easier to notice. This is one of two included Insight Choice activities; the alternative is a guided lodge birdwatching walk.

Join a guided birdwatching walk through the acacia-dotted grounds of Naivasha Sopa Lodge. Scan for African fish eagles, pelicans, kingfishers, herons and cormorants drawn to the lake environment.

Lake Naivasha is one of Kenya’s notable birding areas, and a walk offers time to observe its species without rushing between sightings. This is one of two included Insight Choice activities; the alternative is a guided wildlife walk on Crescent Island.

Explore the Maasai Mara on afternoon and morning game drives across open grasslands and through areas of riverine forest. Watch for big cats, plains game and members of the Big Five in one of Kenya’s best-known wildlife reserves.

The Mara River and the reserve’s varied habitats support a remarkable concentration of animals. Drives at different times of day offer changing light and wildlife activity, from warm colour across the plains to movement around the waterways and woodland.

Visit a Maasai village near the Maasai Mara and meet members of this East African pastoral community. Learn about customs, daily life and the importance of cattle, and see the jumping dance associated with Maasai ceremonial tradition.

Maasai culture has long been connected to the landscapes of the Rift Valley. Meeting community members adds a human perspective to the safari region, offering insight into traditions maintained alongside the changes of contemporary life.

Dine at a private bush barbecue reserved for your small group in the Maasai Mara. Take your seat outdoors for an evening meal, with firelight illuminating the gathering and the sounds of the reserve carrying through the darkness.

The setting makes this more than a standard camp dinner. Eating in the open air places the group within the landscape explored on safari, creating time to share sightings and absorb the Mara’s atmosphere after dark.

Explore UNESCO-listed Stone Town with a Local Expert, moving through market streets to seafront landmarks. See the House of Wonders and visit the Sultan’s Palace Museum and the Old Arab Fort while learning how trade shaped Zanzibar’s historic centre.

Swahili, Arab, Indian and European influences appear in the town’s architecture and winding lanes. Built in 1699, the fort is Stone Town’s oldest building; the nineteenth-century House of Wonders recalls the era of Zanzibar’s sultans.

Visit a Zanzibar herb and spice farm for a closer look at the plants behind the island’s trading history and cuisine. Discover ingredients such as cloves and cardamom in the place where they grow, connecting familiar aromas with their tropical setting.

Spices helped make Zanzibar an important Indian Ocean trading centre. This visit brings that history beyond Stone Town’s buildings and markets, showing how cultivation continues to shape the island’s flavours and identity.

Cook alongside local women at Mama’s of Zanzibar in a hands-on lesson centred on traditional Swahili cuisine. Work with local ingredients and established methods to help prepare a meal, then sit down with your hosts to share what you have made.

Zanzibari cooking reflects the island’s Indian Ocean connections and its long history of spice cultivation. Preparing dishes together offers a personal way to encounter those flavours and experience local hospitality beyond a restaurant meal.

Ride on horseback through the grounds of Naivasha Sopa Lodge, taking in its spacious, wildlife-rich setting at an unhurried pace. Giraffe, waterbuck and monkeys are often seen around the lodge, though any encounter depends on where the animals are at the time.

The ride offers a different perspective from a vehicle or lakeside boat, with the Rift Valley’s open air and greenery all around. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Explore Hell’s Gate National Park near Lake Naivasha, a landscape known for steep cliffs, volcanic formations and trails used for walking and cycling. The park’s dramatic geology offers a marked contrast to the lake’s calm water and papyrus-lined shore.

Part of the Great Rift Valley, Hell’s Gate reveals the forces that shaped this region in its rock faces and rugged terrain. This optional excursion is at additional cost and bookable on tour; the precise activities can be confirmed locally.

Take a sunset cruise off Zanzibar and view the island’s coast from the water as evening light settles over the Indian Ocean. The changing colours and sea breeze offer a scenic counterpoint to Stone Town’s busy lanes and historic buildings.

Zanzibar’s identity has been shaped by maritime trade for centuries, making a coastal cruise a fitting way to experience its seafaring setting. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Sail along Zanzibar’s coast by traditional dhow and snorkel in Indian Ocean waters. From the boat, take in the reef-fringed shoreline; in the water, look for marine life around the island’s coastal habitats.

Dhows have long been part of travel and trade along the Swahili coast. This outing combines that maritime tradition with time to explore below the surface. It is an optional experience at additional cost and bookable on tour.
