Additional information

Visit a Maasai village near the Maasai Mara to meet community members and learn about traditions they choose to share with visitors. Conversation offers a more personal understanding of the people whose homeland surrounds the reserve.

Maasai communities maintain cultural practices while living in a changing modern landscape. Approach the visit as an opportunity to listen and learn directly from your hosts. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Opt for a game drive through Nairobi National Park aboard an overland truck, looking for wildlife around the park’s grasslands and waterholes. The Nairobi skyline beyond the savannah makes this a distinctive introduction to Kenya’s wildlife.

Few national parks sit so close to a capital city. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; sightings vary, but the contrast between open habitat and urban backdrop is part of its appeal.

Choose an additional game drive in the Maasai Mara for more time searching its grasslands for big cats, elephants and grazing wildlife. Each outing brings different possibilities as animals move through the reserve.

The Mara’s broad horizons make even a quiet drive rewarding, while fresh tracks or changing light can reveal a scene missed on an earlier outing. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Take on a white-water rafting adventure in Sagana, working with your raft crew as you navigate the river’s moving water. It is a hands-on way to experience the area’s adventure-sports setting.

Sagana is a popular base for river activities in central Kenya, offering a change of pace from the tour’s wildlife drives. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; participation depends on local conditions and operator requirements.

Try rock climbing in Sagana for an active challenge that puts balance, focus and technique to work. Make your way up a climbing route and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing the landscape from a new vantage point.

The activity adds a different kind of outdoor adventure to a Kenya safari, trading wildlife-spotting for time on the rock. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to local availability and operator requirements.

Take aim with an archery session in Sagana, testing your concentration as you practise drawing, aiming and releasing at a target. It is an approachable way to add a little friendly competition to your time at the riverside adventure base.

Unlike the faster-paced activities available here, archery rewards a steady stance and a measured approach. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to local availability and operator requirements.

Visit Mirror of Hope in Nairobi’s Kibera neighbourhood and meet the team working with local women and children. Hear about their community-led initiatives and the people behind them.

This hosted visit offers a perspective on Nairobi beyond its familiar safari gateway role. It is an opportunity to listen to local voices and learn about the work taking place in one of the city’s best-known neighbourhoods.

Explore the Maasai Mara National Reserve on game drives, scanning its open grasslands for lions, cheetahs, elephants and grazing herds. A picnic lunch in the wild gives you time to take in the landscape between wildlife sightings.

The reserve’s rolling plains support a remarkable concentration of animals. Depending on the season and where the herds are moving, you may also witness part of the Great Migration; wildlife encounters are never guaranteed.

Search for wildlife on a game drive across Amboseli’s plains, keeping watch for elephants, including the exceptionally large-tusked animals for which the area is known. On clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro rises beyond the savannah, creating one of Kenya’s most recognisable safari scenes.

Amboseli’s open terrain offers wide views of animals moving through the landscape. Bring your camera for the chance to frame an elephant against the mountain, while remembering that clear skies and sightings depend on conditions.

Head into Amboseli National Park on an early-morning game drive for another chance to spot its celebrated elephants and other wildlife. Watch the plains as the day begins, with the possibility of seeing animals moving through the cooler morning air.

Amboseli is especially associated with its long-studied elephant families and vast views towards Kilimanjaro. This final wildlife outing offers a different light and atmosphere from an afternoon drive, though sightings and mountain views remain dependent on nature and weather.

Visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery in Nairobi to watch young elephants play and bathe while hearing about their rescue and rehabilitation. It is a chance to see the animals’ individual personalities at close range.

The trust is known for its work caring for orphaned elephants and preparing them for a return to the wild. This optional visit is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to availability and the nursery’s visiting arrangements.

Clip in for a zip-line experience in Sagana and glide through the air at the area’s adventure base. The ride offers a brief rush and a fresh perspective on the surrounding landscape.

Zip-lining is one of several active options available during the stay in central Kenya, well suited to travellers looking for a thrill away from the safari vehicle. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to local availability and operator requirements.
