Additional information

Take a boat safari on Lake Naivasha, moving across freshwater habitat known for resident hippos and abundant birds. Watch for hippos surfacing nearby and African fish eagles circling above the water.

Set in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, the lake offers a wildlife perspective quite different from a vehicle-based game drive. Acacia-lined shores, papyrus and the calls of waterbirds make the journey as much about the lake’s atmosphere as its animals.

Explore Tarangire National Park on game drives through savannah and riverine woodland, including cooler morning hours and the softer light of late afternoon. Watch for elephant herds and other wildlife among the park’s distinctive baobab trees.

The Tarangire River draws animals through this landscape, particularly in the dry season. A bush sundowner offers time to take in the changing light and sounds of the park away from camp.

Explore Nairobi National Park on a game drive, following tracks through grassland and acacia bush with the capital’s skyline visible beyond the reserve. Look for giraffe, zebra, antelope and other wildlife in this striking meeting of city and savannah.

Established in 1946, the park protects a stretch of open habitat immediately beside Nairobi. Its proximity to the city makes this a distinctive introduction to Kenya’s wildlife and the conservation challenges of an expanding capital.

Visit the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi National Park to watch orphaned elephants arrive for their midday milk feed and mud bath. Hear their individual stories as keepers explain the care each young elephant receives.

The visit offers a close look at a long-running Kenyan wildlife conservation programme. Watching the elephants interact with their keepers gives meaning to the patient work involved in rescuing and raising vulnerable animals.

Visit the Karen Blixen Museum, housed in the former home of the Danish author whose years in Kenya inspired Out of Africa. Explore the house and its setting to learn about Blixen’s coffee farm and life in colonial-era Nairobi.

Enjoy lunch in the gardens of nearby Karen Blixen Garden and Cottages. The leafy surroundings offer a setting for reflecting on the area’s literary associations and the more complex history behind Blixen’s account of Kenya.

See Nairobi’s civic and commercial landmarks on a sightseeing drive through the capital. Take in the Parliament Buildings, Kenyatta Avenue, Government Square and the Kenya International Convention Center, alongside City Market and University Way.

These streets reveal a city shaped by government, trade and education. The contrast between formal civic buildings and the activity around the market offers a broader view of Nairobi beyond its role as a safari gateway.

Taste a three-course farm-to-table dinner at Shamba Cafe in Nairobi’s Loresho district. Dine in the gardens of a working farm, where herbs, vegetables and flowers grow on site and help shape the menu.

The garden setting brings the source of the food into view. It is a distinctive way to experience Nairobi’s dining scene, with freshly grown produce and a quieter, green atmosphere on the edge of the capital.

Explore Ol Pejeta Conservancy on a late-afternoon game drive through open grassland and acacia woodland. Look for plains game, birds and the larger wildlife protected in this Laikipia conservancy, with views towards Mount Kenya when conditions are clear.

Pause for a sundowner in the bush as softer light settles over the landscape. Ol Pejeta’s work with rhinos and other threatened species makes wildlife viewing here inseparable from its conservation story.

Meet Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos, at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. A ranger shares their story and explains the protection and scientific work focused on the subspecies’ future.

The two rhinos arrived in Kenya in 2009 and remain under intensive care. Coming face to face with them makes the scale of the conservation challenge tangible and shows how Ol Pejeta combines daily wildlife protection with research.

Visit Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary within Ol Pejeta Conservancy to see chimpanzees rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Learn why they need long-term refuge and how the sanctuary cares for them.

Opened in 1993 with the help of Dr. Jane Goodall, it is the only place in Kenya where chimpanzees can be seen. The visit reveals a different aspect of Ol Pejeta’s work: sustained care for animals unable to return to the wild.

Enjoy a farm-to-table lunch beside Lake Naivasha at Ranch House Bistro. Taste dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, including produce from the property’s own farm, in a setting close to the water.

Naivasha’s papyrus-fringed shore and birdlife lend the meal a distinct Rift Valley character. The emphasis on nearby produce makes this more than a stop for lunch: it connects the dining experience to the fertile landscape around the lake.

Choose a guided wildlife walk on Crescent Island, stepping onto its open grassland beside Lake Naivasha. Look for zebra, giraffe and antelope roaming freely, and experience the landscape on foot rather than from a safari vehicle.

Views across the lake and surrounding Rift Valley add to the sense of space. This is one of two included activities offered at Naivasha; travellers select this walk or the guided birdwatching walk at Naivasha Sopa Lodge.

Choose a guided birdwatching walk through the acacia-dotted grounds of Naivasha Sopa Lodge. Scan the trees and lakeside environment for fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, pelicans and cormorants.

Lake Naivasha’s freshwater habitat makes it a notable birding area, while the lodge grounds offer a gentler way to explore on foot. This is one of two included activities offered at Naivasha; travellers select this walk or the Crescent Island wildlife walk.

Explore the Maasai Mara National Reserve on game drives across broad grasslands and stretches of riverine forest. Morning and afternoon outings create opportunities to look for big cats, plains game and members of the Big Five as wildlife activity changes with the light.

The Mara River and its surrounding habitat support the reserve’s rich concentration of species. Time spent watching from the vehicle reveals the scale of this landscape and the relationships between its predators, grazers and waterways.

Dine at a private bush barbecue in the Maasai Mara, reserved for your small group and served outdoors after dark. Gather around the firelight for a meal accompanied by the sounds of the surrounding reserve.

Eating in the open air changes the feel of a safari evening: the landscape remains present even when it is no longer visible. The private setting offers space for conversation and shared impressions of the Mara’s wildlife.

Visit a Maasai village in the Maasai Mara and meet community members to learn about daily life and customs. Hear about the longstanding importance of cattle and the jumping dance associated with Maasai ceremonial tradition.

The encounter adds a human perspective to a landscape often viewed primarily through its wildlife. Learning directly from local people offers insight into the pastoral traditions that continue to shape communities across this part of East Africa.

Walk through a coffee plantation near Arusha and learn how the crop is grown on fertile land below Mount Meru. Explore the estate with an introduction to planting, growing conditions and the role of coffee in the region.

Coffee has long been part of northern Tanzania’s agricultural life. Seeing the plants where they grow connects a familiar drink to the soil, climate and work behind one of the area’s established crops.

Visit Shanga in Arusha, a social enterprise that trains and employs Tanzanians with disabilities. Walk through its workshops to see weaving, glassblowing, beading, paper making and metalwork, including crafts produced with recycled materials.

The visit highlights the skills behind each piece and the value of meaningful employment. Meeting the people and processes involved offers a closer understanding of a community project rooted in craft, inclusion and resourceful use of materials.

Sit down to a private breakfast in the Tarangire bush, served outdoors in a wilderness setting for your small group. Take time over the meal while listening to the surrounding landscape and watching for movement beyond the table.

With no dining-room walls between you and the park, this breakfast keeps the sights and sounds of safari close. It offers a quieter way to appreciate Tarangire’s open spaces and wildlife-rich setting.

Explore Gibb’s Farm near Karatu, walking through gardens, coffee fields and working farm areas before enjoying a farm-to-table lunch. See where fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown on the fertile slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands.

Founded in the 1920s, the historic coffee estate has long been part of this agricultural landscape. Produce grown on the property helps define its meals, connecting the lunch to the land and the farm’s continuing work.

Meet Hadzabe community members near Lake Eyasi to learn about hunting, gathering, food preparation and the detailed knowledge of the surrounding bush that supports these practices. Hear their distinctive click language and, if the opportunity arises, try archery.

Lake Eyasi lies within the Great Rift Valley, where the Hadzabe have a longstanding connection to the landscape. The visit focuses on skills and traditions shared by community members in their own environment.

Meet the Datoga near Lake Eyasi and learn about their cattle-keeping heritage and established metalworking traditions. Discover how blacksmithing skills continue to contribute to daily life in this part of northern Tanzania.

The encounter offers a perspective distinct from the area’s wildlife experiences. Hearing about craft and pastoral life from the community adds context to the human histories and livelihoods connected to the Rift Valley landscape.

Choose a Swahili lesson with a Local Expert during your time in the Karatu area. Learn an introduction to the language spoken widely across Tanzania and gain a more personal connection to everyday expressions.

Language offers a way into local culture beyond sightseeing. This is one of two included activities offered near Karatu; travellers select the lesson or a guided village walk with their Driver Guide.

Choose a guided walk through a Karatu village with your Driver Guide. Explore a community shaped by markets, farming and the mix of people who live in the highlands near Ngorongoro.

Walking offers a closer view of everyday life in a town that serves the surrounding agricultural area. This is one of two included activities offered near Karatu; travellers select the village walk or a Swahili lesson with a Local Expert.

Descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive across its grassland and lakeside habitats. Look for wildlife drawn by year-round water and grazing, and pause for a picnic on the crater floor beneath the steep caldera walls.

The crater is the world’s largest intact, unfilled volcanic caldera. Its enclosed terrain and concentration of animals create a safari setting unlike the open plains, with the scale of its volcanic origins visible in every direction.

Explore Serengeti National Park on game drives across open plains, around rocky kopjes and beside river lines. Look for lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra and antelope while observing how wildlife uses different parts of this vast ecosystem.

The name Serengeti derives from a Maasai expression for wide plains. Seasonal movement in search of grazing and water helps shape the park’s wildlife story, making each drive an opportunity to read the landscape as well as spot animals.

Gather for dinner in a traditional boma setting in the Serengeti. Share a meal with your small group in an enclosed, fireside space that brings conversation and the atmosphere of the bush together.

The circular layout draws on a style of enclosure long used across East Africa. Open fire, shared food and the sounds beyond the boma make this a dining experience rooted in its safari setting rather than a routine camp meal.

Head into Ol Pejeta Conservancy on a night game drive to experience the landscape beyond daylight safari hours. Travel with a guide and watch for wildlife activity in the dark, when the bush sounds and feels different from the afternoon plains.

This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour. It offers another perspective on the conservancy, complementing daytime viewing with the atmosphere of the African bush after sunset.

Ride on horseback through the grounds of Naivasha Sopa Lodge, experiencing its spacious, wildlife-rich setting from a different vantage point. The lodge’s grounds are known for sightings of giraffe, waterbuck and monkeys.

Moving at a horse’s pace offers time to take in the open lawns and lakeside surroundings. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; wildlife sightings depend on the animals present during the ride.

Explore Hell’s Gate National Park near Lake Naivasha, a landscape known for dramatic cliffs, volcanic formations and trails used for walking and cycling. Its striking geology offers a contrast to the freshwater lake and surrounding woodland.

The park’s open terrain makes it a distinctive Rift Valley outing for travellers interested in scenery as well as wildlife. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; confirm the available activities with your guide.
