Day 1
Start Villabassa
Start at Hotel Adler in Villabassa. The leader will give a short briefing to give an overview of the week ahead. Alternatively, why not soak up the atmosphere with a relaxing drink?

Day 2
Lago di Braies (Level 3 departures)
The ideal start to visiting this vast area is a walk straight from the hotel through the very pretty, flower-filled Braies Valley. We walk through small villages and farmland until we reach the magnificent Lago di Braies itself, one of the 297 glacial lakes in the area. It is certainly one of the most beautiful, surrounded by jagged peaks that are reflected in the extraordinary mirror-like surface of the water. We follow the route of SS hostages, the leaders of 19 countries who were freed after the second world war by the inhabitants of Villabassa.
Distance: 8mi (13km); ascent: 1,663ft (507m); descent: 521ft (159m)

Or you could journey to the attractive provincial capital of Lienz in Austria; or closer to the cosy town of Brunico.

Day 6
Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Level 3 departures)
Starting from Auronzohütte, walk clockwise around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, enjoying a picnic along the way and magnificent views throughout the day. The route then continues back to Auronzohütte in time for the return transfer.
The Tre Cime area also has a powerful historical significance: during the First World War, the front line between Italy and Austria ran through these peaks. Along the route, you can still see traces of this history, including fortifications, trenches, tunnels, iron ladders, and commemorative plaques.

To complete the week, we take the amazing eastern approach route up Monte Piana. After 1,969ft (600m) ascent we find ourselves upon the flat-topped mountain surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in the Dolomites. It is the site of an open-air museum dedicated to the first world war, where trenches, dugouts and shell craters can be seen among the alpine flowers. On our return, we have time to spot the brilliant blue gentians, alpine white edelweiss and bright saffron that create a beautiful scene around Lake Misurina, thanks to the beautiful pink of the limestone rock.
Distance: 8.5mi (13.7km); ascent: 2,450ft (747m); descent: 2,857ft (871m)
Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Food
All breakfasts, five lunches and six dinners, one of which will be an authentic Tyrolean gourmet dinner.
For breakfast, the hotel offers a large selection of cereals, fruit, cheese and cold meats, (along with tea and coffee).
Five packed lunches are provided by the hotel. Each morning there is a small buffet with items to make your own lunch (eg bread rolls, ham, salad…). In an effort to minimise the use of plastic and single-use items, the hotel provides paper bag and reusable cutlery.
Head chef Hélène Markart is a devotee of old traditional recipes but is not afraid to give them a modern twist. At the heart of her philosophy is a reliance on local produce, from the local farmer to vegetables from the hotel garden. It’s no surprise to learn her prowess has been favourably reported in reputable guides such as Michelin.
There is a set menu for standard evening meals (usually three or four courses), which may include some local specialties such as Speckknodel (a dumpling dish).
Our gourmet dinner will undoubtedly be the culinary highlight, though as keeping things fresh and seasonal is part of the charm, there’s no way to know quite yet what delights may be served.
Tyrolean Gourmet Dinner at Hotel Adler
Taste South Tyrol during an authentic Tyrolean gourmet dinner in the elegant dining room of the Hotel Adler. A refined, multi-course menu celebrates Alpine produce—speck, mountain herbs, forest berries—prepared with techniques inspired by Norbert Niederkofler’s philosophy of territory and seasonality.
Expect regional classics reimagined—perhaps speckknodel or river fish—paired with Alto Adige wines. The hotel’s sustainability ethos guides the seasonal selections, while attentive service turns dinner into a shared celebration of place and palate.
Tre Cime di Lavaredo Circuit from Rifugio Auronzo
Walk the iconic loop of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo from Rifugio Auronzo, circling beneath the sheer north faces of the Three Peaks. Trails traverse lunar scree fields and alpine turf, framed by the jagged Cadini di Misurina and sweeping mountain horizons.
This was a fiercely contested First World War frontline: pass trenches, tunnels, and iron steps cut into the rock. In the Tre Cime Nature Park, discover how time and ice sculpted these soaring Dolomite buttresses into today’s dramatic silhouette.
Lago di Braies Valley Walk & Lakeshore Circuit
Walk through flower-rich pastures of the Braies Valley to the emerald bowl of Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee). Trace the larch-fringed shore, pausing to photograph the classic wooden boathouse reflected in mirror-like waters beneath the dramatic wall of Croda del Becco/Seekofel.
Along the way, your leader recounts the poignant route of the SS hostages and the village courage tied to it. Within the Fanes–Sennes–Braies Nature Park, learn how glaciers carved this basin and infused the lake with its striking turquoise hues.
Kreuzbergpass Meadows & Alpe Nemes Hut
Explore high meadows skirting Kreuzbergpass (Passo Monte Croce), following high pastures and ridgelines near the Austrian border. Alpine lawns unroll toward vast views of the Rotwand and Monte Popera, while marmots whistle from rocky outcrops and gentians stud the grass.
Pause at the friendly Alpe Nemes hut for a slice of apple strudel or a restorative herbal tea. Hear how these slopes once straddled tense frontiers, where languages, cuisines, and customs still mingle in the heart of the Dolomites.
Strudelkopf/Monte Specie Summit & Dürrenstein Hut
Climb among pale limestone towers to the panoramic crest of Strudelkopf/Monte Specie. From the summit cross, sweep your gaze across the Dolomite amphitheatre—crisp views of the Tre Cime, Monte Cristallo, and the Braies range etched against the sky.
Celebrate the ascent at the Durrenstein Hut (Rifugio Vallandro) with a plate of Kaiserschmarrn, a Tyrolean classic. Your leader highlights the area’s distinctive geology and discreet wartime traces tucked along the ridgelines.
Monte Piana WWI Open-Air Museum Hike & Lake Misurina Views
Ascend the eastern approach to the flat-topped Monte Piana, a natural balcony over Lake Misurina and the serrated Cadini group. On the summit plateau, wander through the Monte Piana open-air museum, where trenches and dugouts remain among carpets of alpine flowers.
Your leader shares soldiers’ accounts that humanize this high-altitude battlefield. Linger for wide panoramas before descending through larch and stone pine, a thoughtful close to a hike rich in history and scenery.
