Meals
Eating is a big part of traveling. G Adventures understands the importance of breakfast to start your day, we strive to include a basic breakfast wherever possible. A typical breakfast may include toast, coffee and tea, however this may vary depending on the city. Should breakfast not be included, your CEO can suggest some local options.
Travelling with G Adventures you experience the vast array of wonderful food that is available out in the world. Generally meals are not included in the trip price when there is a choice of eating options, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. It also gives you more budgeting flexibility, though generally food is cheap. Our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other’s company. There is no obligation to do this though. Your CEO will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip.
For all trips please refer to the meals included and budget information for included meals and meal budgets.

About Accommodation
What to Take
We recommend using a backpack for your convenience, or a medium-sized suitcase if you prefer. A daypack is also essential for carrying everyday items. Space is limited on transportation, so there is a limit of one main piece of luggage per person. You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage. You must be prepared to carry your luggage up and down stairs, on and off transportation, and to hotels (max 15-20 mins.)
Spending Money
Every traveller is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travellers may drink more than others while other travellers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your own spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping and tipping. Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip.
Angra do Heroísmo UNESCO Walking Tour
Explore the elegant grid of Angra do Heroísmo on a guided stroll past pastel facades, arcaded squares, and the Sé Cathedral. Trace merchant routes that once funneled spices and silver through this mid-Atlantic haven.
Hear why Angra’s Renaissance plan earned UNESCO World Heritage status, and admire defenses like the Fortress of São João Baptista on Monte Brasil. Basalt-paved lanes, azulejo-lined chapels, and leafy gardens reveal centuries of maritime wealth and resilient island identity.
Lagoa do Fogo Crater Lake Hike
Descend through eucalyptus and Japanese cedar to the Lagoa do Fogo shoreline, a high-altitude caldera lake protected as a nature reserve. Follow quiet paths beside levada waterways, listening for chaffinches while clouds comb the ridges above.
On the shore, feel the hush of a pristine volcanic amphitheatre where endemic heather and laurel thrive. The climb rewards with sweeping views of the pristine crater shoreline and the Atlantic beyond—an elemental portrait of São Miguel’s raw geology.
Sete Cidades Caldera Ridge Walk
Walk the crater rim of Sete Cidades for vast views over twin blue-green lakes cupped within a dormant volcano. Trace smooth trails along hydrangea banks toward the famed Vista do Rei, pausing to feel the trade winds flowing over the heights.
Hear the island legend of a shepherd and a princess whose tears colored the waters two hues. Far below, the parish’s whitewashed church, hydrangea-lined lanes, and patchwork fields set a tranquil counterpoint to the caldera’s scale.
Rocha do Chambre High Trails (Terceira)
Traverse rolling highlands to the crest of Rocha do Chambre, where juniper, laurel, and Azorean heather fringe the path. Cross forest tracks and streamlets toward the Pico Alto crater, with island-spanning views that open to sky and sea.
Glance north to the Azinhal Valley and the rugged coast by Biscoitos, where wave-cut lava formations reveal Terceira’s volcanic bones. This is pastoral Terceira at eye level—stone-walled meadows, grazing cattle, and wind-rippled grasses under Atlantic light.
Mistérios Negros Trail & Algar do Carvão Lava Cave
Hike the undulating Mistérios Negros trail, skirting lava domes born of the 1761 eruptions. Tread over ropey basalt and mossy scoria as endemic heather softens the stark, black terrain.
After the hike, descend a stairway into Algar do Carvão, a volcanic chimney draped with silica stalactites and ferns. Gaze down to the clear subterranean lake, where filtered light and echoing chambers reveal Terceira’s interior geology in luminous detail.
Optional Welcome Dinner in Ponta Delgada
Join an evening in the Ponta Delgada old town to join an optional group dinner featuring Azorean flavors—from queijo São Jorge to grilled lapas and octopus stew. Toast the week ahead with a glass of island Verdelho as fishing boats bob in the harbor.
Share first impressions with your small group while you sample Azorean specialities in a convivial setting. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; venues and menus vary to showcase seasonal, locally sourced produce.
Ribeira Funda to Maia Coastal Hike & Praia da Viola
Hike the wild north coast on the Ribeira Funda to Maia trail, tracing clifftop paths and terraced fields down to a black-sand cove. Pause at Praia da Viola “secret beach” for lunch as Atlantic surf rolls against basalt headlands and seabirds bank on the wind.
Pass stone ruins of old water mills once powered by the Ribeira do Salto, reminders of subsistence life on São Miguel. Expect hydrangea-lined lanes, waterfalls that bead the rock, and coastline viewpoints that frame the ocean’s vast horizon.
Terra Nostra Gardens & Geothermal Hot Springs (Furnas)
Visit Furnas to wander camellia-sheltered paths and soak in geothermal hot springs at the storied Terra Nostra Garden. Slip into the ochre, iron-rich thermal pool as steam drifts through tree ferns and palms, or explore winding avenues of rare botanicals.
Founded in the late 18th century, the garden reflects Azorean acclimatization and Atlantic trade routes. Learn how Furnas’ volcanic soil powers local traditions—like slow-cooked cozido—while Furnas valley fumaroles and bubbling caldeiras animate this remarkable landscape.
Welcome Moment: Meet Your CEO and Group
Meet your fellow hikers and meet your CEO and group for an informal briefing that sets the tone for a week of island trails and Atlantic panoramas. Get practical guidance on kit, terrain, and weather, plus local tips and trail briefings tailored to São Miguel and Terceira.
Discover how Azorean culture shapes daily life—from dairy pastures hemmed by stone walls to festivals that animate village squares. This relaxed session builds confidence, clarifies logistics, and ensures you’re ready to enjoy a free afternoon or delve straight into Ponta Delgada’s waterfront cafés.
