Lakeside Villages Ride to Stein am Rhein
On day 3, pedal clockwise around the lake, tracing a necklace of waterfront villages with panoramic sun terraces. Quiet lanes drift past marinas and orchards, and you’ll coast between sleepy harbours that make unhurried stops for coffee or lunch easy. The day’s rhythm is gentle and scenic, leading you toward one of the lake’s best-preserved medieval towns.
Stein am Rhein greets you with frescoed facades around Rathausplatz, timber gables and the serene former Benedictine abbey of St. Georgen. Cobblestones echo underfoot, window boxes overflow with geraniums, and the river slides by beneath stone bridges. Take time to pause for photos and reflection amid the painted guild houses before settling into your hotel.
Gnadensee Shores & Reichenau Island UNESCO Heritage to Konstanz
On day 4, freewheel east and cross into Germany, skirting the Hornstaad nature reserve where you may spot cormorants and red-crested pochards. The path hugs the Gnadensee’s tranquil shoreline toward Klosterinsel Reichenau, whose fields and churches unfurl across the water — a serene prelude to the bustle of Konstanz beyond.
Founded in the 8th century, Reichenau’s Benedictine community helped illuminate Europe’s early medieval culture. Step onto the island to sense this legacy among its Romanesque churches and monastic orchards, then continue to Konstanz, the lake’s lively hub. Here, from Roman times to the Council of Constance, history threads through lanes leading to the Munster’s soaring nave and the harbour’s playful Imperia statue.
Staad–Meersburg Lake Ferry & Vineyard Town Walk to Friedrichshafen
On day 6, pedal through cool oak woodland to the pier and cruise the lake on the Staad–Meersburg ferry (15 minutes; ticket included). Approaching Meersburg, terraces of vines climb the hillside above the water. Step ashore to explore lanes crowned by the Altes Schloss and Baroque Neues Schloss, then choose a terrace with views for lunch.
In the afternoon, roll south along easy lakeside paths toward Friedrichshafen, passing beaches, marinas and bell towers that mark fishing villages. The waterfront broadens as you arrive, with long jetties and wide skies hinting at the city’s aviation heritage. It’s an effortless, scenic stage that balances movement with moments to pause for photos and reflection.
Lindau Island Finale & Lakeside Return to Bregenz
On day 7, trace the shore via Langenargen’s elegant lakeside and through vineyards and cherry orchards, an easy cadence set to water and mountain views. Lunch near the lake, then ride onto Lindau’s island old town, where the harbour’s Bavarian Lion and lighthouse frame long vistas to the Alps glinting across cobalt water.
After time to explore or pause for photos and reflection, follow the final lakeside stretch back to Bregenz. The path runs close to the water, sailboats purling past as alpine outlines sharpen in the afternoon light — a satisfying close that lets you soak in the lakeside atmosphere one last time.
Mainau Island Boat Trip & Palace Gardens
On day 5, take a short boat ride from Konstanz to Mainau, the Flower Island (additional cost, bookable on tour). Stroll the landscaped rose gardens, wander among giant sequoias and Mediterranean terraces, and step up to the Baroque palace created by the Teutonic Order, later the home of the Bernadotte family. The lake unfolds in shimmering views at every turn.
With seasonal plantings and a tropical butterfly house alive with colour, Mainau appeals to garden lovers and casual visitors alike. Boats run frequently, allowing a relaxed visit before you return to Konstanz to enjoy a free afternoon in the Altstadt or along the harbour.
Pfänder Cable Car Panoramic Ascent
On day 7, cap your loop with a ride on the Pfänderbahn cable car from Bregenz to the 1,064 m summit (additional cost, bookable on tour). From the top, survey a sea of peaks — the Allgäu, Lechtal and Swiss Alps — and the full sweep of Lake Constance, its bays and islands charting the route you’ve cycled.
Short summit trails, viewpoints and a breezy terrace make lingering easy as you soak in the lakeside atmosphere from above. It’s a fitting finale of perspective and calm before an evening by the water.
Local Train to Güttingen: Shorten the Ride
On day 3, if you prefer an easier stage, hop on a local train to Guttingen (additional cost, bookable on tour) and rejoin the lakeside route from there. This option trims distance and elevation while keeping the day’s waterside charm intact — ideal if you want more time in cafés or at the water’s edge.
Your route notes outline departure times and the simple boarding process. With the logistics handled, you’ll glide back onto quiet paths, free to enjoy a free afternoon and the serene approach into Stein am Rhein’s frescoed old town.
Friedrichshafen Zeppelin Museum Visit
On day 6, deepen your time in Friedrichshafen with a visit to the Zeppelin Museum (additional cost, bookable on tour). Housed in the historic harbour station, its galleries blend art and technology, including a faithful section of the Hindenburg’s passenger rooms that brings the golden age of airships vividly to life.
Friedrichshafen’s waterfront tells the city’s story: from pioneering aviation workshops to a modern promenade of piers and cafés. After the museum, wander the quay or pause for photos and reflection over broad lake views before continuing your journey.
Konstanz Old Town & Münster Self-Guided Walk
On day 5, wander the narrow streets of Konstanz’s Altstadt, where guild houses, courtyards and small museums invite discovery. Step inside the Konstanz Munster to admire its layered Romanesque-Gothic fabric and echoing cathedral nave. Linger along the harbour to see the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben—sorry, wrong city—Konstanz’s historic council house and the harbour’s revolving Imperia statue.
Konstanz prospered as a medieval trading port and famously hosted the 15th-century Council. Today, the mood is easygoing and café-lined. Use your free time to browse boutiques, enjoy a free afternoon by the lake, or trace the city walls toward the Rhine bridge, where water and sky open out in a wide sweep.
Bregenz Old Town Arrival Stroll & Lakeside Promenade
On day 1, settle into your historic coaching inn, then stroll the cobbled lanes of Bregenz’s compact Oberstadt toward the lake. Drift past pastel facades, arcaded courtyards and the hushed parish church as you soak in the lakeside atmosphere. Down on the waterfront, the long promenade frames wide horizons toward the Alps and the city’s celebrated floating stage of the Bregenz Festival.
Centuries ago this was Roman Brigantium; later, merchants and monks shaped its streets. Today, cafés spill onto pavements and cyclists glide by the water. Pause to pause for photos and reflection at the moles, or watch evening light gather over the lake and Pfänder mountain — a gentle prologue to your week of riding.
Southern Shore Cycle & Rhine Delta Wildlife Watch (Bregenz to Arbon)
On day 2, set out along flat lakeside paths skirting Lake Constance’s southern shore before you cross the Rhine delta into Switzerland. Reeds whisper in the breeze as you scan for kingfishers flashing through the channels, alongside cormorants and elegant grebes. The route keeps close to the water, with benches and jetties inviting short breaks.
The Rhine delta’s marshes form an important refuge where river meets lake — a living mosaic of lagoons and meadows. Rolling into Arbon, you’ll find half-timbered houses and Schloss Arbon near the shore. Wander the quay, enjoy a free afternoon lingering over coffee, and watch sails tack across the bay while church bells chime over the old town’s rooftops.
