Additional information

Enter the Cave of the Apocalypse on Patmos and visit the Monastery of St John high above the island. The cave’s cool, enclosed rock is traditionally associated with the visions recorded in the Book of Revelation.

Founded in the 11th century, the monastery remains a commanding presence in Patmos’s religious landscape. Together, the sites offer insight into why the island became an important place of Christian pilgrimage. This optional shore experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers in Athens for an introduction to the small-group journey. It is a chance to put faces to names and hear about the ancient sites, mainland landscapes and Aegean islands featured on the tour.

The gathering offers a personal starting point in a city where classical landmarks remain part of everyday life. Your Travel Director will accompany the mainland portion of the journey, helping bring its places into focus.

Explore Athens with a Local Specialist, climbing the Acropolis to see the Parthenon above the city. Continue through its classical landmarks, including the Panathenaic Stadium, the columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch.

At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, watch the Evzones’ ceremonial change of guard, marked by their distinctive uniforms and measured steps. The tour connects ancient Athens with the modern capital, where centuries of history remain visible in its streets and public spaces.

Pause for something sweet at Vryssaki Art Cafe in Athens, where the terrace offers a view of the Acropolis above the surrounding rooftops. This café visit gives you time to take in the setting as well as the flavours of a local treat.

Set within the city’s older neighbourhoods, the café offers a different perspective on Athens’ best-known landmark: ancient stone framed by contemporary city life. It is a relaxed, hosted moment amid the capital’s classical sightseeing.

Look down into the Corinth Canal, where a narrow strip of water runs between steep rock walls. The viewpoint reveals the scale of the cut that separates the Peloponnese from mainland Greece and links the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf.

Completed in the late 19th century after much older schemes to cross the isthmus, the canal is a striking work of engineering. Its sheer-sided passage makes the geography of this historic route immediately clear.

Walk through the Lion Gate into ancient Mycenae with a Local Specialist. Explore the remains of its Bronze Age citadel and learn about the royal tombs associated with a civilisation that dominated parts of mainland Greece more than three millennia ago.

Massive stone walls and beehive-shaped tombs give substance to stories of Agamemnon and the Mycenaean kings. Your specialist helps distinguish archaeological discoveries from legend at a site whose treasures reshaped understanding of ancient Greece.

Meet Sophia and Anthony at Axion Esti, their family-run organic beekeeping facility. Put on beekeeper gear to see the hives up close, explore the on-site museum and taste local honey while learning how it is produced.

This hands-on visit introduces the work behind an award-winning local enterprise and the role of bees as pollinators. As a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, it connects a distinctive Greek food tradition with the protection of healthy ecosystems.

Walk Delphi’s Sacred Way with a Local Specialist, climbing past the reconstructed Athenian Treasury and the Polygonal Wall towards the Temple of Apollo. The sanctuary occupies a mountainside setting above the olive groves of the Amfissa plain.

Here, ancient visitors sought guidance from the Oracle of Delphi. Hear how the sanctuary also hosted the Pythian Games, where athletic contests joined music and poetry in honour of Apollo, giving this dramatic archaeological site a cultural importance far beyond its temple ruins.

Look across the plain at Thermopylae, beneath the slopes of Mount Kallidromos, and consider the terrain associated with the stand of King Leonidas and his Spartans against a Persian army in 480 BCE.

The landscape has changed since antiquity: land now covers much of what was once a narrow passage between mountain and sea. Seeing the site helps make sense of why this route mattered strategically and why the battle remains so prominent in Greek history and storytelling.

Visit one of Meteora’s monasteries with a Local Specialist, entering stone-built spaces set high on towering rock pillars above Kalambaka. From this elevated setting, look out across the formations and the Thessalian plain.

Monastic communities established themselves here from the late medieval period, seeking seclusion on heights once reached using ladders and rope nets. The visit reveals how faith and daily life took shape on the cliffs, where the scale of the landscape is as compelling as the centuries-old buildings.

Spend three nights cruising the Aegean, travelling between Greek islands and a Turkish port aboard MV Celestyal Discovery. Watch rugged coastlines and whitewashed settlements come into view from the water as the ship approaches each destination.

The cruise is an experience in its own right: open sea, changing island silhouettes and working harbours give a sense of the maritime routes that have connected Aegean communities for centuries. It provides the setting for included port visits and a choice of additional shore experiences.

Walk through Mykonos Town, known as Chora, during the island port call. Follow narrow lanes between whitewashed buildings, blue-painted doors, small chapels and courtyards brightened by bougainvillea.

Mykonos is nicknamed the Island of the Winds, and the breeze is part of the atmosphere along its compact streets and waterfront. Exploring on foot lets you notice the details of Cycladic island life at your own pace, from tucked-away corners to the town’s lively gathering places.

Explore ancient Ephesus on a complimentary shore experience from Kusadasi. With a Local Specialist, walk its marble streets and see major remains including the Library of Celsus and the great theatre.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was one of the Roman world’s most important cities. Its broad avenues, monumental facades and surviving public buildings reveal the ambition of urban life here, making Ephesus more than a collection of ruins: it is a place where the scale of an ancient city remains legible.

Spend time exploring Patmos during the Aegean cruise’s island call. Take in its harbour setting and the island’s distinctive atmosphere, shaped by the sea, hillside settlements and its longstanding religious associations.

Patmos is closely linked to St John and the Book of Revelation, giving this small island a significance beyond its size. The included port visit allows for independent exploration; entry to the Cave of the Apocalypse and Monastery of St John is offered as a separate optional experience.

Explore Fira, Santorini’s cliff-top town, and look out over the caldera from its position high above the Aegean. White buildings step down the volcanic slopes, while the water and islands within the flooded crater fill the view.

Santorini’s dramatic shape was formed by volcanic activity, and Fira offers an immediate sense of that geography. Enjoy the contrast of pale streets, dark cliffs and blue water at your own pace; a guided journey through the island’s villages to Oia is available separately.

Discover Nafplio’s landmarks on an optional experience, looking towards Palamidi Castle above the town, across the harbour to Bourtzi Fortress and towards the Sleeping Lion carved into the rock. Share dinner at a family-run local restaurant.

Fortifications and seafront views reflect Nafplio’s layered history, including its role as Greece’s first capital after independence. The meal adds a sociable introduction to local hospitality. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Take a seat for a hosted lunch at a local restaurant during your time around Delphi. Share plates with fellow travellers and enjoy a meal away from the archaeological site’s pathways and viewpoints.

The experience offers time to appreciate the hospitality of this mountainous part of central Greece, where food is best enjoyed at an unhurried table. It is a dedicated dining choice rather than an included tour meal. This optional lunch is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Gather at an Athens taverna for an optional evening of traditional Greek dishes and drinks with your fellow travellers. Plates are shared around the table, with the possibility of joining the dancing as the night unfolds.

The taverna is a familiar setting for Greek social life, where conversation and food are as central to the evening as any entertainment. This hosted meal offers a convivial way to experience that atmosphere. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Explore the Palace of Knossos as a choice of shore experience in Crete. Walk among the remains of its monumental Minoan complex and see the vivid wall paintings associated with this Bronze Age site.

Knossos is central to understanding Minoan civilisation and is entwined with later Greek stories of King Minos and the labyrinth. Its courts and rooms convey the scale of a culture that flourished long before classical Greece. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Travel inland through Crete’s countryside and taste Cretan food on an alternative shore experience. This choice shifts the focus from the island’s ancient palace ruins to its rural landscape and culinary traditions.

Cretan cooking has strong ties to local produce and the agricultural life of the island. Tasting its food in this setting offers a direct connection between place and plate, with time to see more of Crete beyond the port. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Travel through Santorini’s villages and vineyards to Oia on an optional shore experience. See whitewashed buildings and church domes along the island’s slopes, and look across the caldera from this celebrated cliff-top village.

The route reveals more of Santorini than its seafront views alone: vineyards occupy land shaped by volcanic activity, while settlements cling to the crater’s rim. In Oia, the flooded caldera opens beneath the village. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.
