Insight Vacations

Meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers over a welcome dinner in Athens. Share a table and savour local cuisine while getting acquainted with the group.

Greek dining places conversation at the centre of the meal. This hosted evening offers a sociable introduction to the country’s food culture and the people you’ll travel with.

Explore Athens with a Local Specialist on one of two included choice experiences. See the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Arch of Hadrian before ascending the Acropolis, where the Parthenon stands above the city.

Examine the Temple of Athena Nike and the Caryatids of the Erechtheion, carved figures supporting its Porch of the Maidens. These monuments reveal how religion, civic identity and artistry shaped ancient Athens.

Walk through Plaka with your Travel Director on one of two included Athens choice experiences. Follow its winding streets beneath the Acropolis, discovering tucked-away corners and the neighbourhood’s mix of old buildings, small shops and cafés.

Often called the Neighbourhood of the Gods, Plaka brings everyday Athenian life into the shadow of the ancient citadel. The guided walk gives you a closer look at its character than a view of the Acropolis alone.

Visit the monument to King Leonidas near the site of the Battle of Thermopylae. See the setting of the Spartan-led defence against the Persian army of Xerxes I in 480 BC and consider why this pass mattered.

The terrain helped a smaller Greek force delay the Persian advance into mainland Greece. Although the coastline has changed since antiquity, the memorial keeps the battle and its place in Greek history in view.

Get to know Kalambaka with your Travel Director on an orientation of the town beneath Meteora’s towering rock formations. See how its streets and buildings sit at the foot of the immense stone pillars.

Kalambaka is the inhabited gateway to a landscape long associated with Orthodox monastic life. The orientation helps you place the town in its remarkable setting and appreciate the scale of the rocks rising above it.

Visit a centuries-old Meteora monastery with a Local Specialist, entering one of the religious communities built high on the region’s rock pillars. Look out across the Peneios Valley from this UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

The monasteries were established in an isolated setting that offered both refuge and space for contemplation. Their buildings, perched above the plain, make the relationship between Orthodox faith and Meteora’s extraordinary geology tangible.

Explore Delphi with a Local Specialist, climbing the Sacred Way past the Treasury of the Athenians and the carefully fitted stones of the Polygonal Wall. Reach the Temple of Apollo on the slopes of Mount Parnassus.

Ancient visitors came here to consult Apollo’s oracle on matters of public and private importance. Walking through the sanctuary reveals how its monuments marked the approach to one of the Greek world’s most influential sacred places.

Explore the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games at Olympia. See the remains of the Temple of Zeus and athletes’ training grounds, and enter the ancient stadium, where stone markers still show the sprint’s starting line.

The games began in 776 BC as a festival honouring Zeus; Olympia also hosted the Heraia, women’s games dedicated to Hera. Standing beside the track connects the surviving ruins with the contests once held here.

Join a local chef for an immersive cooking demonstration in Olympia. Learn how regional ingredients become familiar Greek dishes, including cool, garlicky tzatziki, and savour the flavours prepared for dinner.

The experience brings Greece’s food traditions off the page and into the kitchen, with the chef sharing a passion for local produce and preparation. It is a chance to connect the textures and tastes of the meal with the hands-on techniques behind them.

Enter Mycenae through the Lion Gate with a Local Specialist and walk among the citadel’s immense Cyclopean walls. Visit the distinctive tholos tombs, whose beehive-shaped chambers speak to the wealth and authority of Mycenaean rulers.

This was a powerful centre of Late Bronze Age Greece. The surviving fortifications and burial places offer evidence of its society and kingship, beyond the legends long associated with the site.

Discover Nafplio with your Travel Director on an orientation of its waterfront and historic centre. Take in neoclassical buildings, lively streets and the Palamidi fortress overlooking the town.

Nafplio was chosen as the first capital of independent Greece, a chapter reflected in its public buildings and civic character. Its setting beside the water gives this guided introduction a different atmosphere from the country’s ancient archaeological sites.

Meet artisan Maria Gonidou and her daughter Nefeli at their Nafplio atelier. Watch a live demonstration on an ancient loom and learn how hand-weaving techniques turn thread into distinctive textiles.

The family-run workshop keeps traditional skills in active use rather than behind a museum display. This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® experience supports the craft and the people practising it, with an opportunity to see their one-of-a-kind work up close.

View the Corinth Canal from its crossing point, looking down between steep limestone sides to the narrow waterway below. The cut marks the division between mainland Greece and the Peloponnese.

Opened in 1893, the 6.3-kilometre canal links the Aegean and Ionian seas, shortening the route for vessels that can navigate it. Its sheer walls make the scale of this engineering project particularly clear from above.

Gather for dinner in true Greek style at a local restaurant in Athens. Share a meal with your fellow travellers and enjoy the lively conversation that is as much a part of the occasion as the food.

Greek meals are often enjoyed at an unhurried pace around a shared table. This hosted evening gives the group a chance to reflect together on the places, crafts and flavours encountered across Greece.
