We set off on a tour of the Romantic Road, one of the most well-travelled tourist routes in Germany. We combine picture-book scenery and sweeping vistas with visits to the medieval walled towns of Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuhl, which feature beautiful half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets and quaint alleyways.

Germany’s Romantic Road, Munich & Lake Constance

Our destination is the town of Lindau, uniquely located on an island on the eastern side of Lake Constance and set against a stunning backdrop of mountains. Explore the historic structures, lively squares and picturesque alleyways of the Old Town, stroll along the lakeside promenade or head to the bustling harbour where the entrance is flanked by a Bavarian lion and lighthouse.

We visit Munich, the capital of Bavaria and one of Germany’s most attractive cities. Lying near the foot of the German Alps, the city is famous for its stunning architectural wonders, including the Frauenkirche, Munich’s largest church with its two dome-topped Gothic towers and the City Hall in the Marienplatz, a lively square in the heart of the city.

Explore the Heidelberg Old Town, strolling from Marktplatz to the Church of the Holy Spirit and over the Old Bridge for a sweeping castle panorama. Linger by the Neckar riverfront as red-roofed lanes tumble beneath the sandstone ruins above.

Home to Germany’s oldest university (1386), Heidelberg inspired Romantic poets and philosophers. Baroque facades rebuilt after wars line narrow streets filled with bookshops and wine taverns, creating an intimate atmosphere beneath wooded hillsides and echoing church bells.

Visit the elegant spa town of Baden-Baden for an easy orientation including the Kurhaus and casino, the frescoed Trinkhalle colonnade, and the plane-tree-lined Lichtentaler Allee. Enjoy manicured gardens, grand facades, and cafe terraces that spill onto sunlit promenades.

Renowned since Roman times for thermal springs, Baden-Baden bloomed in the Belle Époque as Europe’s resort of choice. Set in the Black Forest foothills, it offers refined calm, sculptures amid flowerbeds, and stately architecture that speaks to centuries of leisurely culture.

Set sail on a cruise on Lake Constance from Lindau’s harbor, gliding past the Bavarian Lion and lighthouse toward sweeping views of vineyards and villages. Capture the Alpine horizon while gentle waves and gulls frame wide-angle photos.

This optional excursion is at additional cost and bookable on tour. Timed to local schedules, the cruise typically offers multilingual commentary and a relaxed vantage point on one of Central Europe’s great inland seas, with ample time for scenic photography.

Explore Lindau’s island Old Town and stroll the lakeside promenade, where the harbor is framed by the Bavarian Lion and lighthouse. Browse arcaded boutiques on Maximilianstrasse and feel the lake breeze with an Alpine backdrop shimmering across the water.

A former Free Imperial City, Lindau charms with medieval towers such as the Mangturm and pastel facades around lively squares. Photographers prize the harbor’s mirror-calm mornings and late-day glow along the quay, when sail masts and bell towers reflect across Bodensee’s glassy surface.

Follow the Romantic Road to the storybook towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbuhl. Walk cobbled lanes to Rothenburg’s photogenic Plonlein, trace the town walls, and admire gabled merchants’ houses around Dinkelsbuhl’s St George’s Minster.

This celebrated route threads Franconian landscapes and market towns popularized in the 1950s for their intact medieval cores. Sample a crisp Schneeball pastry, browse woodcarving workshops, and pause at viewpoints where timber-framed rooftops stack above river bends and red-tile spires.

Join a guided panoramic tour of Bavaria’s capital to the heart of Marienplatz and the New Town Hall, where the clockwork Glockenspiel performance enlivens the square. Wander past market stalls at Viktualienmarkt and admire the twin domes of the Frauenkirche, framing views toward the distant Alps on clear days.

Discover layers of history from Wittelsbach rulers to post-war renewal as you pass the Residenz and broad boulevards planned by Ludwig I. Your Tour Manager points out grand beer halls and green courtyards locals love, capturing the city’s blend of tradition and contemporary design.
