Margate Seaside Promenade & Turner Contemporary
Stroll Margate’s breezy promenade and gaze across its sandy bays, a shoreline long celebrated by artists and holidaymakers. Browse retro shops and vintage arcades, or step inside the acclaimed Turner Contemporary gallery to see how modern art dialogues with coast and sky. Time permitting, you might also visit the mysterious Shell Grotto (entry at own expense).
Feel the creative spirit that drew J.M.W. Turner to these horizons, where big skies bathe the town in shifting light. Cafés, sea views, and a relaxed rhythm invite you to soak in the seaside atmosphere at your own pace.
Dunkirk Beaches & Operation Dynamo Sites
Visit Dunkirk’s windswept shoreline and the resort of Malo-les-Bains, where the sands and seawall hold echoes of 1940. Walk the promenade and reflect at plaques and memorials that recall Operation Dynamo, when a vast armada of naval vessels and “little ships” evacuated Allied troops under fire.
Beyond the wartime history, discover a working harbour and lively town squares that were carefully rebuilt after conflict. Keep an eye out for the historic belfry and estuary views that underline Dunkirk’s enduring bond with the sea and the Channel.
Boulogne-sur-Mer Walled Old Town & Ramparts
Explore the walled Haute-Ville of Boulogne-sur-Mer, where cobbles lead to quiet squares, artisans’ shops, and sweeping views from its 13th-century ramparts. The lower town and harbour bustle with fishing boats and seafood stalls, offering a classic Pas-de-Calais tableau.
Step into grand history at the Basilique Notre-Dame, crowned by a soaring dome that dominates the skyline, or linger by the gates and bastions that once guarded this Channel port. The mingled scents of sea air and bakery windows complete a richly French coastal mood.
Channel Ferry Crossing: Dover to Calais
Cruise the English Channel by ferry, stepping out on deck for bracing sea air and wide-angle views of the White Cliffs of Dover. As the English coast recedes and the French coastline draws near, watch gulls wheel and ships traverse one of the world’s busiest sea lanes.
This classic route layers scenery with maritime heritage, from lighthouse silhouettes to bustling port activity. Settle in with refreshments on board or head outside to feel the sea breeze and capture photographs of chalk cliffs, open water, and arriving harbours.
Evening Entertainment at the Grand Burstin (Folkestone)
Unwind after a day’s exploring with light evening entertainment at your Folkestone hotel. Settle into the lounge, order a drink, and enjoy an easygoing programme that might feature live music, quizzes, or dancing, creating a relaxed social atmosphere among fellow travellers.
Between songs and conversation, glance toward the harbour lights and feel the resort’s nostalgic seaside character. It’s a convivial way to round off your coastal discoveries, with informal performances designed to complement—not crowd—your time by the Kentish shore.
Canterbury Cathedral City (Optional Excursion)
Explore Canterbury’s medieval heart, where timber-framed shopfronts line the King’s Mile and spires rise above ancient lanes. View the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral—part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site—and, time allowing, choose to step inside independently to admire its soaring nave and stained glass (entry not included).
This excursion is at additional cost (£16pp) and bookable on tour. Enjoy free time to browse bookstores and cafés or walk stretches of the medieval city walls before rejoining your group.
Sandwich Medieval Town & Old Walls Walk
Explore the medieval lanes of Sandwich, set beside the tranquil River Stour. Amble past timber-framed houses and quiet quays as you trace one of England’s most complete Old Town walls. This beautifully preserved port rewards unhurried wandering, with photo stops at weathered gateways and peaceful churchyards.
Discover how Sandwich thrived as one of the Cinque Ports, guarding the Channel trade routes for centuries. Story-filled plaques and evocative vistas invite you to pause for photos and reflection while you take in the town’s intimate scale and authentic medieval character.
