Our full-day tour begins with a visit to the historic Holy Island of Lindisfarne, lying just off the Northumberland coast and accessible only twice daily at low tide. This beautifully unspoilt island, where Christianity first took hold in Britain, offers a serene atmosphere, rich history and remarkable wildlife, along with the striking 16th-century Lindisfarne Castle perched above the shoreline.
Later, we continue to the charming coastal village of Bamburgh, known for its dramatic setting and sweeping sea views. Explore its historic church, enjoy the peaceful walking trails or simply take in the sight of its iconic castle rising above white sandy beaches with views stretching out to the Farne Islands.
Durham, Holy Island & Beamish
The fascinating and ever-popular living museum of Beamish gives us the opportunity to discover the amazing industrial heritage in the North of England. From the 1940s farm to the early 20th-century Pit Village, we take a step back in time as we meet costumed characters and catch a tram through The Town; a typical market town from the years leading up to the First World War.
Durham, Holy Island & Beamish
From a morning departure at your local pickup we travel to Durham, where we enjoy a visit en route to our hotel. Durham is a handsome university city set on the River Wear, where we find an abundance of impressive historical buildings and sights set amongst the cobbled streets and picturesque riverbanks. These include the unique 11th-century castle, the university’s Botanic Garden and the highlight of the city’s skyline, the magnificent Norman cathedral. Later, we continue our journey to check in at our hotel.
Bamburgh Coast & Village Walk with Castle Views
Explore the coastal village of Bamburgh, where dunes, stone cottages and white-sand beaches frame the mighty profile of the iconic Bamburgh Castle. Stroll the shoreline for sweeping views to the Farne Islands and Holy Island, or pause in the green for photographs against the castle’s dramatic backdrop.
Uncover layers of history from the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Bernicia to the Victorian restoration led by industrialist William Armstrong. Step into St Aidan’s Church or follow the beach path, letting the North Sea breeze and long, luminous skies set an atmospheric scene.
Beamish Living Museum: Town, Pit Village & Tram Ride
Step into Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, where costumed interpreters animate everyday life across a vast open-air site. Catch a vintage tram through The Town, browse the sweet shop or bakery, and wander the early-1900s Pit Village and 1940s Farm to see coal-fired ranges, allotments and colliery cottages in action.
Trace the North East’s industrial story of coal, steam and craft amid cobbles, chimneys and whirring workshops. Authentic smells of coal smoke and freshly baked scones heighten the time-travel effect, while friendly guides share insight into work, community and social change.
Durham Riverside Views & Cathedral Close Orientation
Visit the handsome university city set in a wooded loop of the River Wear, and admire skyline views of Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle crowning the peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk cobbled lanes and riverside paths for superb photo angles across ancient rooftops and towers.
Learn how Norman builders began the cathedral in 1093 to honour St Cuthbert, and how the powerful Prince-Bishops once ruled from the castle. Enjoy time to browse independent shops, trace stone archways around the cathedral close, and appreciate the city’s scholarly calm and medieval grandeur.
Holy Island of Lindisfarne Tidal Crossing & Village
Discover and visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, reached only at low tide when you cross the tidal causeway to a serene world of sea-washed sands and stone cottages. Wander the harbour and village lanes with views to Lindisfarne Castle, keeping an eye on the shore for waders and seals along the Northumberland coast.
Gain a sense of sacred history at the cradle of Northumbrian Christianity, where monks created the Lindisfarne Gospels under St Aidan and St Cuthbert. Hear tales of Viking raids and quiet resilience as you explore at your own pace, soaking up briny breezes and wide horizons.
