Additional information
Arctic Circle Crossing & Eternity Fjord Scenic Sail
Stand on deck to cross the Arctic Circle, a time-honoured polar milestone marked by crisp air and far-reaching views. Glide toward the mouth of Eternity Fjord, where steep granite walls appear to soar 2,000 metres above the sea and glaciers spill their blue shadows into deep water.
Listen for the crackle of brash ice and watch seabirds wheel along the cliffs while your team interprets the geology and glaciology that sculpt this coast. Keep your camera ready and take a moment to pause for photos and reflection amid classic Arctic scenery.
Kangaamiut Village Visit & Cultural Encounter
Venture ashore by Zodiac to the island community of Kangaamiut, a colorful settlement shaped by fishing and hunting traditions. Stroll past bright wooden houses, nets, and boats pulled up on the rocks, meeting residents who maintain deep ties to sea and season.
Gain perspective on how supplies arrive, how winter sea ice dictates travel, and how language and craft sustain identity. Your guides share insights into traditional Greenlandic life while you enjoy coastal vistas and the sound of waves folding against the fjord.
Kitsissuarsuit Community Visit or Shore Landing
Conditions permitting, set out for an expedition landing at tiny Kitsissuarsuit or a nearby shore, a world of skerries, kelp-fringed bays, and sea-smoothed stones. Walk with your guides to explore a wild Arctic shoreline, where the rhythm of tides and ice defines daily life.
In this small community setting, the scale of Greenland becomes intimate—boats bob in the harbor, sled dogs echo from the hills, and the ocean’s resources remain central. Conversations and field interpretation reveal the settlement’s close connection to the sea and the resilience it inspires.
Ilulissat Icefjord Boardwalk, Icefjord Centre & Sermermiut Hike
Walk the wooden boardwalk to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, where cathedral-sized icebergs drift from Sermeq Kujalleq into Disko Bay. Photograph sculpted pinnacles and deep blue crevasses as light shifts across the pack, then visit the Icefjord Centre to engage with exhibits on ice, climate, and local life.
Continue on foot to hike to Sermermiut, an ancient Inuit settlement site framed by tundra and sea. Your guides share stories of migration and survival while you take in vast horizons, the distant rumble of calving ice, and Arctic cotton grass moving in the wind.
Vaigat Sound Zodiac Cruise & Nature Walks
Launch Zodiacs to cruise among brash ice in Vaigat Sound, the narrow strait between Disko Island and the Nuussuaq Peninsula. Cliffs tower overhead while seabirds ride the updrafts; your guides adjust the route to read wind, swell, and ice for the day’s best vantage points.
Come ashore for a nature walk on the tundra, tracing shorelines where Arctic willow hugs the ground and lichens paint the rock. Scan for kittiwakes and fulmars, listen for distant glacier crackles, and take time to pause for photos and reflection in this raw, high-latitude seascape.
Disko Island Basalt Landscapes & Qeqertarsuaq Visit
Embark by Zodiac to cruise between ice floes before stepping onto Disko Island’s volcanic shores. Hike through Arctic tundra nourished by basaltic soils, where summer brings wildflowers and the basalt forms striking columns and red, flat-topped peaks.
Continue into the town of Qeqertarsuaq, nestled beneath basalt cliffs and columns. Learn how geology shapes daily life, from fishing grounds to freshwater sources, and capture scenes of colorful houses, waterfalls threading the rock, and the steady pulse of the Greenlandic West Coast.
Itilleq Village Visit & Kaffemik Welcome
Call at Itilleq, a small settlement near the Arctic Circle where traditions remain strong. Walk the lanes between bright homes and the shoreline before you join a traditional kaffemik—a warm community gathering over coffee, cake, and conversation hosted in a local home or communal hall.
Hear personal stories of fishing seasons, winter travel, and the importance of kinship as you meet local hosts. Depending on community schedule, a friendly soccer match or church visit may be possible, offering a vivid window into coastal life near the Arctic Circle.
Daily Expedition Lectures & Naturalist Recaps
Throughout the voyage, join engaging lectures that illuminate Greenland’s geology, culture, and wildlife. Specialists translate sea-ice charts, currents, and glacial dynamics into clear stories, deepening appreciation for wildlife and ice ecology across Disko Bay and the central west coast.
In the evening, gather for an evening recap that reviews sightings, shares photography tips, and previews the next landings. Discussions of Arctic history and culture connect today’s communities with ancestral lifeways, adding layers of meaning to each shore visit and Zodiac cruise.
Meet Your Expedition Team & Onboard Briefing
Embark and meet your Expedition Team for an in-depth introduction to Greenland’s west coast and the unique rhythm of expedition cruising. Learn how to join Zodiac operations, dress for Arctic conditions, and follow respectful community and wildlife guidelines that safeguard this fragile environment.
