Additional information

On day 2, pedal out of Heraklion toward Crete’s most storied site. At Knossos, walk the courts of the Minoan Palace, exploring storerooms, the throne room, and colorfully reconstructed frescoes that evoke the myth of the Minotaur. After your visit, continue through fertile hills to the stone-paved lanes of Koutouloufari, a traditional village draped in bougainvillea.

Knossos is often called Europe’s oldest city. Excavated by Sir Arthur Evans, its early 20th-century restorations remain a talking point in archaeology. As you ride onward, you’ll sense how the palace once commanded the surrounding landscape, from olive groves to the sea. Arriving in Koutouloufari, pause at a kafenio to soak in the village atmosphere before a slow Cretan evening.

On day 3, climb into the Dikti foothills, threading through thyme-scented slopes and the quiet lanes of Vrahasi, where it can feel as though time has paused. In Neapoli, stop at the Vassilakis Estate to sample fresh-pressed extra-virgin olive oil and learn how families have tended these groves for generations before descending to lakeside Agios Nikolaos.

Olive oil is the backbone of Cretan cuisine and culture; tasting the fruit of Lassithi’s sunlit groves connects you directly to island traditions. Roll into town beside Lake Voulismeni, a near-circular waterbody linked to the sea, and enjoy a free afternoon by Mirabello Bay, where cafés spill onto the promenade and small fishing boats bob in sheltered waters.

On day 5, a rewarding coastal stage carries you west along cliff-backed shoreline and citrus-fringed valleys. Glide into Myrtos for a coffee stop under tamarisk shade, then continue through low-key Tertsa and Keratokambos where the pace is unhurried and the sea is never far. Finish by rolling into tranquil Tsoutsouros and its broad, sandy beach.

This is the Crete of everyday rhythms—small chapels, olive terraces, and the tang of salt on the wind. The route invites you to pause for photos and reflection at viewpoints and to swim whenever a cove tempts. In Tsoutsouros, kick off your shoes and let the day end with toes in the sand and the sound of surf.

On day 6, a short included transfer sets you at Mesohori for a countryside ride to one of Crete’s great Bronze Age capitals. At Phaistos, step across sun-baked courtyards and storerooms where rulers once oversaw the Messara Plain. After exploring, descend quiet lanes to the seaside town of Agia Galini, tucked between hills and harbor.

Phaistos rivaled Knossos in power, famed for the enigmatic disk unearthed here and for views stretching to Mount Psiloritis. The palace’s unembellished masonry contrasts with Knossos’ reconstructions, offering a different lens on Minoan life. Agia Galini greets you with whitewashed steps, bobbing boats, and waterfront tavernas—an ideal place to enjoy a free evening by the water.

On day 7, transfer to Spili to fill bottles at its lion-head fountains before riding through chestnut and plane-tree valleys toward Limni ton Potamon (Lake of the Rivers). Cross the Potamon Dam for wide open views and a chance to sample rustic dishes at lakeside tavernas, then descend toward the coast.

Rethimno awaits with a Venetian harbor, Ottoman minarets, and the ramparts of the Fortezza crowning the headland. The city’s lanes reveal layers of Cretan history from republic to empire. Arrive with time to enjoy a free afternoon wandering cafés, workshops, and the shoreline promenade as the light softens over the Aegean.

If you choose to add an extra night in Agios Nikolaos, set out on a scenic 32 km loop skirting Mirabello Bay. Spin along the coast to Elounda and, time permitting, take a short local boat to Spinalonga, the islet crowned by a Venetian fortress. Back on shore, return via coastal lanes with sea views and cafés for a swim stop.

Spinalonga’s bastions once guarded the bay; later, its settlement became a leper colony until 1957, leaving poignant stone alleys and ramparts to explore. This optional add-on deepens your sense of Crete’s maritime history and offers freedom to ride at your own pace. Additional cost applies and it is bookable on tour.

From Ierapetra on day 4, you may opt to cruise across the Libyan Sea to Chrissi Island (Gaidouronissi). Land on white-gold sands backed by a rare juniper–cedar forest, then spend a few unhurried hours swimming in turquoise, gin-clear water and wandering the shell-strewn shoreline.

Chrissi is a protected Natura 2000 reserve, prized for its luminous shallows and fragrant dunes. Bring sun protection and water; facilities are minimal, which preserves the island’s cast-away feel. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour (weather and local schedules permitting).

On day 4, trace the coastline east before turning south through olive-cloaked hills to the Libyan Sea. The road reveals coves and long arcs of sand; pause to slip into the water at a golden beach and feel the warmth of the south coast sun. Your destination is Ierapetra, a relaxed waterfront town with a palm-lined promenade.

Ierapetra is Europe’s southernmost town, shaped by trade and the sea. Venetian and Ottoman traces linger around the small fortress and old quarter, while fishing boats bring in the day’s catch for simple tavernas. As evening falls, soak in the seaside atmosphere with a plate of grilled fish and a view across the Libyan Sea.

On day 1, settle into Heraklion and take a self-guided stroll through the old town to the seafront. Follow the harbor wall to climb the bastions of Koules (Rocca a Mare), the Venetian stronghold that has guarded the port for centuries, and stroll the seafront promenade lined with fishing caiques and cafés. Return via the market streets to enjoy a free afternoon in Crete’s lively capital.

Those curious about Minoan art can step inside the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home to masterpieces such as the “Bull-Leaper” fresco and the “Prince of the Lilies”. This gentle orientation sets the tone for your journey, linking Venetian walls and busy squares with the island’s Bronze Age legacy and preparing you for the sites you’ll encounter later in the week.
