Then, cycle through rice fields and along beaches. Right by Santo Andre Lagoon, and part of a Nature Reserve, the Costa de Santo Andre Beach is a long stretch of sand with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calm waters of the lagoon on the other. Additional information
Porto Covo Fishermen’s Village & Vila Nova de Milfontes Coastal Ride
On day 3, follow quiet lanes past São Torpes Beach, then roll along cliff-backed coves into Porto Covo, a whitewashed fishing village of cobbles and blue-trimmed cottages. All streets seem to lead to the tiny harbor, tucked into a rocky inlet where boats bob between swells. Continue south to the Mira River and the seaside town of Vila Nova de Milfontes.
Milfontes straddles river and ocean, with viewpoints over Furnas Beach and superb late-day light. As you enjoy a free evening, taste grilled fish in a taverna and watch the tide slide past the sandbars—classic Alentejo coast, unhurried and elemental.
Cabo Sardão Cliffs, Stork Nests & Zambujeira do Mar Ride
On day 4, follow the Rota Vicentina’s Historical Way via Almograve’s red cliffs and dunes to the wind-scoured headland of Cabo Sardão. Here, Atlantic swells hammer dark schist cliffs where, uniquely, white storks nest on sea stacks. Ride on to the peaceful village of Zambujeira do Mar, perched above a crescent of sand.
This stretch forms the heart of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. The geology is raw and folded, the air tangy with sea spray. Pause for photos and reflection at cliff-edge miradouros, then descend toward village cafés where fishermen swap weather notes over espresso.
Aljezur Castle & Coastal Loop Ride
On day 5, spin inland to Aljezur, crowned by a Moorish hilltop castle. Choose the shorter route for beach time near your hotel, or opt for the longer coastal loop over tranquil gravel tracks that dip to secluded coves before returning to the valley.
Built in the 10th–11th centuries, the Moorish castle surveys the fertile Ribeira de Aljezur. Its crumbling walls recall centuries of frontier life between Algarve and Alentejo. Whichever route you select, you’ll enjoy a free afternoon to swim, wander village lanes or linger over a pastry in the shade of cork oaks.
Carrapateira, Bordeira Dunes & Amado Surf Beaches Ride
On day 6, ride west to Carrapateira, a low-slung village near the ocean’s edge. Skirt the Bordeira dunes, where winds sculpt vast sand waves, and continue to Praia do Amado, a famed surf beach backed by ochre cliffs. Take time for a casual seafood lunch in Carrapateira before turning inland along sandy tracks to Vila do Bispo.
This is the Vicentine Coast at its most elemental—gorse-scented headlands, the hiss of surf and wide Atlantic light. Waymarks and quiet lanes keep your focus on the coast’s textures and rhythms as you soak in the lakeside atmosphere of dune-rimmed lagoons and shorebirds.
Sagres Peninsula & Cape São Vicente Lighthouse Ride
On day 7, trace clifftop tracks to Praia da Cordoama before angling toward the wind-beaten tip of Europe at Cabo de São Vicente. The road rolls through gorse-strewn meadows until the red-domed lighthouse appears, standing sentinel above sheer cliffs. Pause for photos and reflection at the “end of the world” before looping toward Sagres and back to Vila do Bispo.
The cape’s lighthouse and small museum echo Portugal’s maritime story, while nearby Sagres recalls Prince Henry the Navigator and the spirit of exploration. Ocean, stone and sky meet in stark geometry here—an elemental finale to your coastal ride.
Departure Transfer to Faro Airport
On day 8, a comfortable included transfer whisks you from Vila do Bispo to Faro Airport. Settle back and retrace the coastline by road, catching final glimpses of cork forests, whitewashed hamlets and the blue edge of the Atlantic.
This quiet journey bookends your week on the Rota Vicentina, from Setúbal’s estuary to the Algarve’s western capes. It’s a gentle moment to pause for photos and reflection and to carry the cadence of sea, wind and wheel into the rest of your travels.
Kayaking the Mira River to Furnas Beach
From Vila Nova de Milfontes, slip into a kayak and paddle the calm Mira River toward Furnas Beach, where river meets ocean (ideal late on day 3 or early on day 4). Reedbeds whisper, cormorants dive and the coastal breeze carries the scent of eucalyptus as you explore the river’s gentle bends.
The Mira is one of Portugal’s cleanest rivers, flowing un-dammed to the sea. This optional outing offers a fresh waterside perspective on the town’s setting and sandbars. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour, weather and tide permitting.
Sagres Fortress & ‘End of the World’ Visit
Complement your day 7 ride with a visit to the Fortaleza de Sagres, the clifftop bastion linked to Portugal’s nautical lore. Walk the ramparts, step onto the stone wind rose (rosa dos ventos) and gaze across the meeting of ocean currents at Europe’s far southwest.
Associated with Prince Henry the Navigator, the fort’s exhibits trace maritime science, cartography and life at the edge of the known world. Entry is at additional cost and bookable on tour, with time to explore before or after reaching the cape’s lighthouse.
Setúbal Dolphin-Watching Boat Trip
Enhance your time in Setúbal with an afternoon or sunset dolphin-watching boat trip on the Sado estuary (typically on day 1). Skim past sandbanks and marshes as guides help spot the resident bottlenose dolphins and identify waders along the shoreline. The low, golden light amplifies the estuary’s serene palette.
The Sado is one of Europe’s few estuaries with a stable dolphin community, a testament to its protected waters and fishing heritage. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to sea conditions and availability.
E-Bike Upgrade for the Rota Vicentina
Prefer a little assist on breezier headlands or longer loops? Upgrade to a pedal-assist e-bike for smoother climbs and extra range along the coast. The boost lets you extend scenic detours or simply ride in a lighter cadence while keeping pace with companions.
E-bikes open the route to a wider range of riders without altering the self-guided spirit of the trip. This upgrade is at additional cost and bookable on tour (or in advance), subject to availability and size confirmation.
Sado Estuary Ferry Crossing & Wildlife Spotting
On day 2, board the ferry across the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, scanning the water for the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins and the sky for herons and white storks. As the boat glides toward Tróia, breathe the saline air and watch reedbeds and sandbanks slip by, a tranquil prelude to your first coastal ride.
This protected mosaic of mudflats and marshes sustains rich biodiversity and the fishing traditions of Setúbal. The crossing links city quays with the pine-scented Tróia sandspit, where you’ll pause for photos and reflection before rolling into the rice fields and beaches that define Portugal’s quiet lower Alentejo coast.
Comporta Rice Fields to Santo André Lagoon Coastal Ride
After the ferry on day 2, cycle through Comporta’s rice paddies, maritime pines and sandy tracks toward the Costa de Santo André. Here the Santo André Lagoon mirrors the Atlantic, with a ribbon of dunes between lagoon-calm waters and ocean surf. Expect briny breezes, the cry of gulls and the occasional fisherman mending nets by the shore.
The lagoons form part of a protected reserve, a haven for waders and migratory birds. Continue along the coastline, where challenging Atlantic swells attract local surfers, while you trace quieter paths skirting the dunes. The day blends motion and stillness—broad skies, long horizons and the steady cadence of your wheels.
Arrival Transfer & Setúbal Orientation Stroll
Touch down in Lisbon and relax with an included transfer to Setúbal, your gateway to the Sado estuary. In the evening on day 1, wander the riverfront and stroll the historic lanes toward the Convento de Jesus, a Manueline gem, before you climb to Forte de São Filipe for sweeping views across the estuary and the Tróia Peninsula.
Founded in the late 15th century, the convent showcases filigreed stonework linked to Portugal’s Age of Discovery, while the star-shaped 17th-century fort guarded Setúbal’s harbor. Pause to soak in the bayside atmosphere, then settle into the rhythm of coastal Portugal, readying for the rides ahead along the Rota Vicentina.
