Additional information

On day 2, set out along spruce-fringed lanes to the fishing village of Port Clyde, pausing at wharves where traps and buoys dry in the salt air. Continue to Marshall Point Lighthouse to pause for photos and reflection at the wave-washed point made famous in Forrest Gump. Watch lobsterboats trace the horizon as gulls wheel overhead.

Your route reveals quintessential Midcoast Maine: clapboard houses, tide-carved ledges, and pocket beaches. Hear how lights like Marshall Point once safeguarded mariners threading these rock-studded channels. Return to your inn with time to soak in the lakeside atmosphere of the garden and let the day’s sea breeze linger into evening.

On day 3, enjoy a coastal spin to Birch Point State Park, where cobbled coves meet granite headlands. Continue toward Owls Head Lighthouse, a petite sentinel guarding Penobscot Bay. The ride rolls into Rockland, a maritime town famed for its lobster heritage and friendly galleries.

At Owls Head, climb the short stairway for far-reaching views once vital to sailors navigating fog and ledges. In Rockland, stroll Main Street’s independent shops or relax by the waterfront as working boats return with the day’s catch. The evening is yours to enjoy a free afternoon exploring this arts-forward community.

On day 4, board the early ferry across Penobscot Bay, cruising to Vinalhaven as seabirds skim the wake and pine-topped isles slide past. Pedal quiet roads through coastal hamlets, then veer inland to former granite quarries where still, clear pools invite a refreshing swim in summer.

Vinalhaven’s pink-and-gray granite once paved America’s cities; today its village wharf hums with island life as bait trucks rumble and dinghies bob at their moorings. Browse downtown or seek peaceful lanes lined with wild roses before the afternoon ferry ride back to Rockland, watching the bay glow toward evening.

On day 5, follow the shoreline to postcard-pretty Camden, then extend your miles with the Beauchamp Point loop—an 11 km ribbon through a protected peninsula of shingled cottages, wind-bent pines, and sparkling coves. Return along lanes scented with beach rose and salt spray.

Camden’s snug harbor, ringed by hills and forests, has sheltered coasters and schooners for generations. Pause for photos and reflection by the docks, then wander local bakeries and bookstores. The mix of sea air, sail masts, and clapboard storefronts captures the classic New England mood that has lured artists and sailors for over a century.

Also on day 5, add the Camden Hills State Park loop (24 km) for sweeping panoramas of Camden and Penobscot Bay. The climb rewards steady pedaling with lookouts over forested islands and working harbors—an ideal place to pause for photos and reflection.

From Civilian Conservation Corps-era trails to the historic stone Mount Battie Tower, these hills frame the coast’s rugged beauty. Expect shifting scents of balsam and salt as you crest ridges and descend toward town, returning with a well-earned appetite and a deeper feel for Maine’s granite backbone.

On day 6, transfer to Bar Harbor and ride the Carriage Roads of Acadia National Park—a car-free network designed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. to thread forests, lakes, and mountain shoulders. Pedal smooth crushed-stone paths beneath birch and spruce, crossing graceful granite-arched bridges that frame mirror-still ponds.

Along the way, detour to vistas above Jordan Pond and the Bubble Mountains, or coast through ferny glades where hermit thrushes call. Hear how the park’s conservation legacy preserved this coastal wilderness, then roll back into Bar Harbor as the light softens over Frenchman Bay.

On day 7, cross Frenchman Bay on the ferry from Bar Harbor to Winter Harbor and ride the wild shores of the Schoodic Peninsula. Pink granite ledges, stunted spruce, and dramatic surf set a bracing rhythm as views open toward Cadillac Mountain and offshore lights—Mark Island, Baker Island, and Egg Rock.

Schoodic’s working heritage endures in its traditional lobstering community, where stacks of traps and coiled warp line the docks. Note: if you’ve selected an e-bike, the ferry does not accept them; an alternative route on quiet Southwest Harbor roads will be provided so you can enjoy a similarly scenic day’s ride.

On day 8, trace Acadia’s famous Park Loop Road along craggy shorelines and spruce headlands, with photo stops at Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs. The ocean’s pulse and the scent of fir guide you from overlook to overlook.

Those with energy to spare can tackle the climb to Cadillac Mountain—the North Atlantic seaboard’s highest point—for a final panorama over islands scattered like stepping stones. It’s a fitting close to your week of coastal riding before your midday transfer returns you to Portland.

On day 3, use your evening in Rockland to visit the Farnsworth Art Museum, home to an acclaimed Wyeth family collection and galleries that explore the Maine coast’s place in American art. Discover paintings inspired by weathered boats, granite quarries, and salt-streaked barns.

Docents illuminate the region’s artistic lineage—from N.C. and Andrew Wyeth to contemporary voices—revealing how Maine’s light and working waterfronts continue to shape creative expression. This is an optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour through your local host.

If you arrive early or add nights in Portland, join a whale watching cruise from the Old Port to spot minke and humpback whales, porpoises, and seabirds riding the onshore winds. Naturalists help interpret behaviors as lighthouses and forts slip by the harbor mouth.

Feel the salt spray and open-ocean breeze while learning about Gulf of Maine ecology and the conservation that safeguards these rich feeding grounds. This is an optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour via your hotel or local host, and operates seasonally and weather permitting.

Extend your time in the city to attend a performance by the Portland Symphony Orchestra, one of New England’s finest. Settle into Merrill Auditorium as the hall fills with warm acoustics and a program ranging from Baroque masters to contemporary works.

It’s a graceful counterpoint to the week’s sea air and cycling, offering a window into Portland’s vibrant cultural life. This is an optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour through your hotel, with schedules varying by season.

On day 2, meet your Headwater-appointed local representative for a concise welcome, bike fitting, and safety overview before the coastal rides begin. You’ll be shown how to use the Headwater navigation app for turn-by-turn directions, scenic detours, and points of interest, ensuring a smooth self-guided experience along Maine’s back roads.

Learn about local road etiquette, where to find the best coffee stops, and how to spot working lobster wharves tucked into quiet coves. With logistics handled and luggage transferred between inns, you’re free to enjoy a free afternoon settling into your seaside surroundings and preparing for your first ride.
