Today’s route takes you through the Green Heart of Holland, a true cycling paradise, with characteristic peat and polder landscapes, small farming communities and picturesque historical towns such as Oudewater. It was to this place that women who had been accused of witchcraft fled from all over Europe to try to have their innocence proven by weighing. Finish your ride in medieval Gouda, discover this beautifully preserved town centre, visit the Gothic town hall and St. John’s church. Stop off at a bakery to buy fresh syrup waffles (Gouda is the hometown of the famous stroopwafels) and pick up some Gouda cheese.

Overnight Best Western Plus City 4*, Gouda.

From Gouda you’ll continue through the Green Heart of Holland to the village of Kinderdijk. Explore the site on which 19 windmills have stood majestically since 1740 and used to drain excess water out of the low-lying polder up into the River Lek. You can even pay one of the mills a visit. Your destination, Papendrecht, is just a ferry crossing away from of one of Holland’s oldest towns; Dordrecht, which is completely surrounded by rivers. Beautiful bridges take you across the water into the heart of town with its many monumental buildings around the harbour

Follow today’s route past one of the few remaining freshwater tidal areas in Europe: the Biesbosch National Park. Crossing a one-kilometre-long bridge high above Holland’s Diep river, you arrive in the south of the Netherlands. Continue through village after village, with Brabant hospitality enticing you in to stop for a cup of coffee and a big slice of fruit tart. Bergen op Zoom, today’s destination, is 800 years old and the town’s narrow streets, old squares and hundreds of monuments testify to a rich and dramatic past. Be sure to feast your eyes on Markiezenhof, a late-gothic mansion built by the local noble family in 1485, that now serves as a museum and archive, before you settle down at one of the many pavement cafes.

Please note you will only be able to cycle through the Biesbosch park on days when the ferry is running, which is not daily. An alternative route will be provided for days when there is no ferry service.

Overnight Grand Hotel De Draak 4*, Bergen op Zoom.

The landscape along today’s cycling route is predominantly wooded. On the border between the Netherlands and Belgium, catch your breath in De Zoom – Kalmthoutse Heide, a lovely cross-border nature reserve. The route takes you along the Scheldekaaien (quays on the River Scheldt) right into the historical heart of Antwerp, Belgium’s most important port city and the largest town in Flanders. After seeing the historical centre you might like to venture to the hip and trendy parts of the city: ‘t Zuid and Het Eilandje. If you’ve worked up a thirst on your journey, consider a visit to the De Koninck beer brewery. It has been going strong since 1833 and has a new visitors centre welcoming guests wishing to look around and do some tasting. This brewery is best known for its ‘bollekes’, a type of rounded beer glass.

Overnight Park Inn Hotel by Radisson 3*, Antwerp.

Meals: Breakfast

After a short stretch on the banks of the River Scheldt, change course to follow the River Rupel, the shortest river in the country (nearly 10km long). Along the way you’ll see abandoned brick works and chimneys as silent witnesses of a tough industrial past. A good place to stop for lunch is the old town of Mechelen, within sight of the church tower of 13th century St. Rombold’s cathedral or the Grand Place with its fabulous architecture. Continue along the River Dijle to end your day in the delightful university town of Leuven, where the oldest houses date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Also visit the early-Gothic church of St. John the Baptist (1304) and the Old Market Square (Oude Markt), nicknamed ‘the longest bar counter in the world’ due to the enormous number of bars and cafes on the square.

The hills of Belgian Brabant and the expansive Sonian Forest set the scene for today’s cycle. There are also train options if you don’t feel like cycling into the big city of Brussels. The city’s main attraction is the fantastic Grand Place and the nearby little statue of Manneken Pis still draws the crowds although there’s plenty more to see. Your visit to Brussels should involve culinary treats such as delicious hot waffles, chocolate, triple-fried frites and beer. You should also enjoy the shopping and culture; you’ll be hard-pushed not to want to stay longer.

Additional information

On day 4, trace the edges of Biesbosch National Park, one of Europe’s rare freshwater tidal wetlands. Glide past willow woods, creeks and shimmering inlets where kingfishers flash and the current quietly breathes with the tide. When the park ferry operates, your route threads deeper into this aquatic maze; an alternative route is provided on non-operating days.

Cross into North Brabant and roll through villages known for warm hospitality and generous pastry portions, before arriving in Bergen op Zoom’s medieval core. Admire the late-Gothic Markiezenhof city palace and settle at a pavement café as the bells ring over intimate squares.

Day 5 unfolds through the cross-border reserve of De Zoom–Kalmthoutse Heide, a landscape of heather, pines and sandy paths where skylarks rise over the moor. The frontier slips by almost unnoticed as you roll into Flanders toward the broad River Scheldt.

Follow the Scheldekaaien quays right into Antwerp’s historic heart, where the skyline lifts to the Cathedral of Our Lady and the Grote Markt guildhouses. From bustling docks to Renaissance squares, the ride captures the city’s dual identity: maritime vigor and artistic heritage.

On day 6, swing from the Scheldt to the short River Rupel, passing abandoned brickworks and tall chimneys that hint at a tough industrial past. Pause in Mechelen’s Grand Place beneath townhouses and the mighty silhouette of St. Rumbold’s Cathedral, then follow the River Dijle to leafy paths.

Arrive in Leuven’s Old Market Square—nicknamed the longest bar in the world—and wander the beguinage lanes and university facades that have shaped scholarly life for centuries. The day balances quiet riverscapes with living history in two of Flanders’ most characterful towns.

Day 7 brings gentle climbs over the hills of Brabant and into the Sonian Forest’s beech cathedral, where filtered light and birdsong set a contemplative rhythm. If you prefer, opt for a train transfer into the city and keep the afternoon free.

Wheel triumphantly into Brussels’ Grand Place, a theatrical square encircled by ornate guildhalls, and detour to Manneken Pis and art-lined arcades. It’s a fitting finale that ties together the Low Countries’ love of craft, trade and convivial streets.

Before your first full ride—typically on day 2—meet the local team for a personal bike fitting and safety check. Saddles and controls are adjusted to your comfort while staff outline daily distances, terrain and way-finding. You’ll also receive a walkthrough of the turn-by-turn navigation app that guides each stage.

The session covers roadside basics and how luggage transfers keep your cycling light and carefree. With routes, support contacts and timing tips explained, you set off with confidence to enjoy the landscapes, towns and culinary stops along the way.

Make your first night special with an evening cruise on Amsterdam’s canals. Glide beneath brick arches and past Golden Age gables as the water mirrors the city’s warm lights. Live commentary traces the story of merchants, shipyards and trading companies that shaped the canal ring.

This relaxed introduction offers sheltered seating, broad waterside views and a chance to enjoy a free evening afterward in the Jordaan or along the Nine Streets. Optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour.

Enhance your day 3 visit by stepping inside a working museum mill at Kinderdijk. Climb the narrow stairs, feel the timber creak and see how families once lived among gears and sails while the mill fought back encroaching water. Exhibits and short films explain the area’s ingenious system of boezems and sluices.

Nearby, the pumping station completes the picture of Dutch water mastery. It’s a vivid, hands-on counterpart to your ride through the polders. Optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour.

On day 2 in Gouda, delve deeper into local flavors with a visit that explores the craft of Gouda cheese and the city’s signature stroopwafel. Interactive displays and tastings illuminate dairy traditions, aging methods and the caramel-filled waffle that sweetens Dutch coffee breaks.

Learn how market days shaped civic life around the Gothic town hall, then savor subtle differences between young and matured cheeses. It’s a delicious counterpoint to your ride through grazing country. Optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour.

Reward day 5’s ride with a tour of De Koninck brewery, a city institution since 1833. Interactive exhibits trace Antwerp’s beer routes and glassware traditions before you sample beers in the classic bolleke, the rounded glass beloved by locals.

Sip, compare styles and learn how Flemish brewing culture pairs with cheeses and charcuterie in neighborhood cafés. It’s a convivial taste of Antwerp’s everyday life. Optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour.

Break your day 6 journey with a climb of St. Rumbold’s Cathedral tower. Ascend the broad steps past historic bells to a skydeck where you can pause for photos and reflection across Mechelen’s rooftops, the River Dijle and, on clear days, as far as Antwerp’s spire.

Interpretive panels chart the tower’s construction and the city’s role between Brussels and Antwerp. The climb adds a literal high point to your riverside ride. Optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour.

In scholarly Leuven on day 6, join a guided tasting that samples regional Belgian beers amid the lively cafés of the Old Market Square. Learn about styles from crisp blondes to complex Trappist ales, proper glassware and the art of pairing.

Along the way, your host touches on centuries of brewing lore connected to the university and local guilds. It’s an easygoing way to unwind after your ride and tune into Flemish café culture. Optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour.

Celebrate arrival on day 7 with a hands-on session that tempers chocolate and molds pralines under a chocolatier’s guidance. Discover why Belgian couverture shines—bean origins, conching, and the precise snap and sheen of a polished ganache shell.

After creating your own bites, sample regional styles and stroll to the Grand Place with a sweet souvenir. A delicious finish in the capital of confections. Optional experience at additional cost, bookable on tour.

On day 2, pedal across peatland polders and ribbon-straight dikes through the quiet fields of the Green Heart. You’ll pass reed beds, canal-side farmsteads and grazing dairy herds en route to story-book Oudewater, where you can pause for photos and reflection by slender drawbridges and cobbled quays.

Continue to medieval Gouda, home of a Gothic town hall and the celebrated Sint-Janskerk stained glass. The day blends easy cycling with Dutch heritage—cheese markets, centuries-old weighing houses and intimate canals—showing how water management sculpted this landscape and its livelihoods.

Day 3 carries you to Kinderdijk’s 18th-century windmills, aligned like sentinels above the wetlands. Here, generations once pumped polder water up to the River Lek, protecting low-lying farms from floods. Follow reed-lined paths where the sails turn with the breeze and marsh birds skim the ditches.

From here, a short local ferry crossing brings you toward Dordrecht’s historic harbours, a city encircled by waterways and trimmed with timbered warehouses and brick merchants’ homes. The ride marries engineering ingenuity with river town charm, revealing how the Dutch mastered water to build trade and communities.

Arrive in the Dutch capital and wander the 17th-century canal district, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of gabled townhouses, stone bridges and rippling reflections. On day 1, make your way through the Jordaan lanes and Rembrandtplein, pausing to soak in the waterside atmosphere and watch cyclists glide past corner cafés.

Trace the story of a city built on trade and tolerance as you explore the Golden Age canals that shaped Amsterdam’s prosperity. Your evening is free to dine, people-watch and enjoy a free night in the city before tomorrow’s first ride. This gentle introduction sets the tone for a week of slow travel between remarkable Low Countries cities.
