Cross-Country Skiing in Skåbu, Norway route map

Begin your adventure in Skåbu, a small Norwegian village thought to be named after Skadi, the Norse goddess of skiing and hunting.

Around 8pm, say hallo to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.

Your tour leader then ensures a big Norwegian welcome by arranging dinner at the hotel, our first taste of the gourmet offerings put together by head chef Lukasz B. Socha.

Explore the wonderous snowy landscapes of Skåbu on our cross-country ski adventure! We have a flexible itinerary, expertly crafted by your guides to optimise for local conditions and the group’s overall ability, though there is on- and off-track skiing all week.

We have a ski fitting on the morning of Day 2 and start skiing on flatter areas to learn the basic techniques or rediscover our ski legs, before we adapt our skills to the off-track terrain. Trails are prepped as soon as snow falls, many of them ideal for less experienced skiers. Our routes are changeable but could include going through sheltered birch forest and up into the mountains for magnificent panoramas.

Returning to our hotel each evening, we enjoy storytelling in the living room before dinner. Most nights we have an innovative two-course meal; on Day 7, however, we enjoy a five-course gourmet menu – the perfect send off for a week of thrilling cross-country skiing.

Dark Sky experience: On one night (chosen by the tour leader based on weather conditions), we embark on a two-hour Dark Sky experience. Together, we go up into the mountains behind the hotel in snowshoes (or on foot depending on snow and ground conditions). During the experience, our guide tells us about stars in Norse mythology and illuminates us on navigation in the Stone Age and Viking eras.

Additional information

Dinners are mostly two-course gourmet menus, put together by award-winning chef Lukasz B. Socha, though we have a five-course menu on the final night.

His food is solely created from local produce (most of it from the hotel farm). For example, you might be served Skåbu elk with mashed potatoes and vegetables, plus cheesecake for dessert. All meals are served with bread, and the hotel is experienced in serving hungry skiers.

For lunch, you make your own packed lunches from the produce at the buffet breakfast. The hotel does have paper bags and a few thermos bottles to lend out. However, we strongly recommend you bring your own reusable lunch box and thermos to cut down on waste and ensure availability.

Vegetarians can be catered for – please let us know at least three weeks before departure if you have any dietary requirements.

Worth knowing

As there is no coffee shop around, you should bring snacks if you think you might want them throughout the day. However, coffee, cakes, drinks and snacks are available all day at the hotel (payable locally).

Hike with snowshoes under a Dark Sky, climbing into the quiet slopes behind Skåbu Fjellhotell to trace constellations over the valley. Move by headlamp through powder-soft snow and feel the clear, crystalline cold as the high country settles into the hush of a Norwegian winter night.

Experience navigation traditions from the Stone Age and Viking eras as your guide shares Norse star lore. This included outing is scheduled for the most promising evening during your stay, keeping the route flexible and conditions-led to maximise stargazing while ensuring comfort and safety.

Get fitted with skis, boots and poles before stepping onto gentle terrain for a focused skills session. Learn classic cross-country technique—diagonal stride, kick-and-glide, efficient poling, braking and cornering—with coaching tailored to your level. Build confidence on gentle terrain as guides fine-tune balance, rhythm and glide for smooth, energy-saving travel.

Discover Norway’s deep ski heritage while you practise around Skåbu’s forest loops and farm fringes. Expect clear instruction, supportive pacing and practical drills. This workshop typically takes place on day 2 so everyone moves into the week prepared and ready to explore longer routes across the fjell.

Join an expert-led ski day across a network of groomed tracks with optional off-track sections, gliding through sheltered birch forest to open fjell plateaus with big-sky views. Routes are tailored to your level, with small groups matched by ability for an easy, social pace and plenty of time to take in the scenery.

Explore terrain between the gateways of Jotunheimen, Rondane and Langsua National Parks, where local teams prepare trails as soon as snow falls. Hear the crisp squeak of cold snow, feel the dry mountain air, and pause for wide horizons—the essence of Norway’s winter landscape.

Gather for fireside storytelling in the hotel’s cosy living room as your host shares local legends, mountain-life anecdotes and the tale of Skåbu’s namesake, the Norse goddess Skadi. Settle into warm light and timbered spaces as the day’s cold fades and the village rhythm takes over.

Learn how Norway’s highest permanently inhabited village balances tradition with modern hospitality, and how a former cooperative was reborn as today’s boutique hotel. These relaxed sessions foster camaraderie within the group and add cultural depth to the landscapes you explore on skis.

Celebrate your week with a five-course tasting menu in Restaurant Skadir, showcasing produce from the hotel farm and surrounding mountains. Expect precise Nordic cooking—silky game reductions, bright pickles, winter root vegetables and fragrant breads—served with thoughtful pacing and a calm, candlelit mood.

Meet chef Lukasz B. Socha’s creative approach to seasonality as your hosts share the stories behind each plate. This elegant finale distils the flavours of Innlandet and the warm hospitality of Skåbu, a fitting close to days spent gliding through snow-laden forests and fjell.

Meet your group and meet your Tour Director for a succinct briefing before settling into the candlelit Restaurant Skadir. Savour locally sourced Norwegian mountain produce shaped into refined, seasonal plates—an elegant first taste of Skåbu Fjellhotell’s hospitality and the rhythms of life in Norway’s high mountain village.

Discover how this former cooperative building was revived as a boutique retreat and how award-winning chef Lukasz B. Socha champions ingredients from the hotel farm and surrounding forests. Expect clean Nordic presentation, deep game flavours and fresh breads—an inviting prologue to days spent out on the snow.
