Insight Vacations

Walk with your Travel Director through Brussels’ historic centre to the Grand-Place, framed by ornate guild houses and the Gothic Town Hall. Visit the nearby Manneken Pis, the small bronze statue whose irreverent character has become a symbol of the city.

Share a welcome dinner with wine at a restaurant in the Old Town and meet your fellow travellers. The Grand-Place’s richly decorated buildings reflect the civic and mercantile wealth that earned the square UNESCO World Heritage status.

Choose a private truffle-making lesson and tasting with a master chocolatier, learning how one of Belgium’s best-known confections is made. Explore central Brussels with a Local Expert, including the cobbled Grand-Place and its landmark Town Hall.

This included Insight Choice combines hands-on chocolate making with the city’s architectural heritage. The UNESCO-listed square has served as a setting for markets, celebrations and public life for centuries. This experience is offered as an alternative to the Waterloo visit.

Choose to visit the Battle of Waterloo site, where Napoleon’s forces were defeated in 1815 by allied armies led by the Duke of Wellington and Marshal Blucher. Explore the museum and underground Visitor Centre, including a 3D film and panoramic battle painting.

Your Travel Director provides context for the fighting that ended Napoleon’s imperial rule. Seeing the terrain alongside the exhibits gives this included Insight Choice a perspective distinct from a conventional museum visit. It is offered as an alternative to the Brussels chocolate experience.

View the Atomium’s connected metallic spheres, Brussels’ distinctive landmark built for the 1958 World’s Fair, and see the contrasting Chinese and Japanese Pavilions. This sightseeing experience brings together two very different expressions of the city’s international outlook.

The Atomium represents an iron crystal magnified on an immense scale, a symbol of postwar confidence in science and design. The pavilions, commissioned under King Leopold II, add an unexpected architectural counterpoint with their ornate Far Eastern-inspired forms.

Explore Ghent’s historic streets with a Local Expert, passing its waterside quays, churches and squares. Visit St Bavo’s Cathedral and see the imposing Castle of the Counts, a medieval fortress beside the city’s old centre.

Ghent’s merchant wealth left a legacy of monumental buildings amid an active modern city. Your expert-led walk reveals that contrast while introducing the cathedral’s artistic heritage, including its association with the Van Eyck brothers’ celebrated Ghent Altarpiece.

Walk Bruges’ cobbled streets with a Local Expert, admiring stepped-gable houses and the Market Square’s medieval belfry. Explore Burg Square, where the Gothic town hall stands near the Basilica of the Holy Blood and its decorated chapel.

Canals and remarkably preserved buildings recall Bruges’ prominence as a medieval trading centre. The belfry once helped regulate civic life and commerce; seeing it within the surrounding square makes the city’s mercantile history tangible.

Visit Maredsous Abbey in Wallonia’s green Molignée valley and learn about its Benedictine community and the production traditions associated with Maredsous beer and cheese. Taste beer and creamy, golden-crusted cheese in the setting of the abbey grounds.

Founded in the late 19th century, the abbey has long been a centre of education, craft and religious life. The tasting connects those traditions with two Belgian specialities shaped by the region’s monastic heritage.

Savour a farm-to-table dinner at Les Écuries du Parc in Clervaux, where a former stable setting provides a characterful backdrop for dishes made with locally sourced, seasonal produce. Take a stroll to see Clervaux Castle illuminated against the village skyline.

The castle’s origins reach back to the 12th century, while the surrounding Luxembourg Ardennes retain a distinctly rural atmosphere. Together, the regional meal and evening walk offer a sense of place beyond the grand duchy’s capital.

Explore Luxembourg City’s UNESCO-listed Old Town with a Local Expert, seeing the cathedral and Grand Ducal Palace. Admire the Pétrusse Valley from Pont Adolphe and visit the grave of U.S. General George S. Patton.

The capital’s historic fortifications occupy a dramatic landscape of cliffs and ravines. At the Luxembourg American Cemetery, Patton rests among American service members who died in the Second World War, adding a moving wartime perspective to the city’s layered history.

Visit Bastogne’s star-shaped Mardasson Memorial, dedicated to American forces who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. You may climb to its upper level for views across the surrounding countryside. Explore the Bastogne War Museum and its interactive account of the Second World War.

Bastogne was a focal point of the fierce winter fighting in 1944–45. The memorial landscape and museum together place military events alongside the experiences of people caught in the conflict.

Discover Rotterdam with your Travel Director on an orientation featuring the striking Markthal and the cable-stayed Erasmus Bridge. Their bold forms show why the city has become a showcase for contemporary Dutch architecture.

Much of central Rotterdam was rebuilt following devastating bombing in 1940. Its changing skyline tells a different urban story from the canal cities elsewhere in the Netherlands, while the bridge reflects the continuing importance of the city’s river and port.

Visit Delft’s last surviving original Delft Blue pottery factory, established in 1653, and see how master painters hand-decorate ceramic pieces. Discover the painstaking brushwork behind the familiar blue-and-white designs.

Delftware flourished during the Dutch Golden Age, when local makers developed a distinctive response to imported Asian porcelain. Watching the craft at its historic source reveals the skill and continuity behind a style now closely associated with the Netherlands.

See the Dutch Parliament in The Hague and view the Peace Palace, home to the International Court of Justice. This sightseeing introduction highlights the city’s dual role in Dutch government and international law.

The Hague has long been the Netherlands’ seat of government, despite Amsterdam being the constitutional capital. The Peace Palace, opened in 1913, gives visible form to efforts to resolve disputes between nations through legal institutions rather than armed conflict.

On select departures, visit Keukenhof Gardens to wander landscaped paths and seasonal displays of spring flowers. The gardens are particularly associated with colourful tulip beds, alongside other flowering bulbs grown in the Dutch countryside.

Keukenhof showcases the Netherlands’ long-established bulb-growing tradition on a grand scale. Displays depend on the season and growing conditions, and this included visit is offered only on departures scheduled to call at the gardens.

Cruise Amsterdam’s UNESCO-listed canals while enjoying dinner inspired by the city’s Dutch-Indonesian culinary heritage. See gabled merchant houses and waterside streets from the water, where the canal network’s graceful curves become especially clear.

Amsterdam’s waterways were central to its 17th-century expansion as a trading city. Indonesian flavours also reflect a complex colonial history whose influences remain present in Dutch food culture. The combination of city views and a distinctive menu makes this more than a standard sightseeing cruise.

Explore Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum with a Local Expert, gaining insight into the Dutch national collection and its celebrated Golden Age paintings. See major works including Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, alongside art that illuminates centuries of Dutch life.

A specialist perspective helps reveal the details, patrons and historical setting behind the paintings. The museum’s collection brings together portraits, everyday scenes and objects that trace the Netherlands’ artistic and cultural development.

Travel through the Dutch polder landscape towards Monnickendam and visit a rustic workshop to learn how local cheese is made, from milk to finished product. Watch a craftsman shape a wooden clog from a block of wood.

The demonstrations offer a close look at practical traditions associated with rural Dutch life. Seeing the work in progress makes the craft behind these familiar Dutch products more tangible than a display of finished pieces alone.

Gather with your Travel Director and fellow travellers for a Celebration Dinner with wine at a restaurant in Monnickendam. The village’s historic streets and waterside setting provide a quieter contrast to nearby Amsterdam.

Once connected to the region’s maritime trade, Monnickendam retains the scale and character of an old Dutch town. Sharing a hosted meal here offers time to savour its atmosphere and the company of the group.

Choose an optional visit to Antwerp, Belgium’s lively port city, during your time in Brussels. Its historic centre, fashion culture and long association with the diamond trade offer a different perspective on urban Belgium.

Antwerp grew into a major European trading centre in the 16th century, and its artistic heritage is closely linked with the painter Peter Paul Rubens. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; the precise programme will be confirmed locally.

Explore the historic market square of Ypres and attend the Last Post Ceremony, a tribute to those who died in the First World War. The ceremony is held at the Menin Gate, which bears the names of Commonwealth soldiers missing from the Ypres Salient.

Ypres stands amid the former battlefields of Flanders, where the scale of wartime loss remains part of the landscape’s identity. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Join a Local Expert to explore Trier, the German city known for its extensive Roman heritage and as the birthplace of Karl Marx. Its ancient streets offer an opportunity to encounter one of the region’s most historically layered urban centres.

Trier was an important city in the Roman Empire, and landmarks such as the monumental Porta Nigra recall its imperial past. This optional visit from Luxembourg City is at additional cost and bookable on tour; specific stops will be confirmed locally.

Venture into the Dutch countryside and cruise across the IJsselmeer to visit Marken and Volendam. Discover communities associated with wooden houses, fishing traditions and regional dress, with a chance to sample Dutch pancakes.

The IJsselmeer was formed when a great inland sea was enclosed by the Afsluitdijk in the 20th century. Its waterside villages preserve reminders of older livelihoods alongside everyday Dutch life. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Choose a hosted optional dinner in Amsterdam as another way to spend an evening in the Dutch capital. It offers a shared dining experience rather than independent time in the city.

Amsterdam’s restaurant scene draws on both Dutch traditions and the international influences that have shaped this trading city. The itinerary does not specify a venue or menu for this dinner, so details will be confirmed locally. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour.
