Cologne, Koblenz & the Mighty Rhine

Towering cathedral spires, riverside promenades and lively squares make Cologne one of Germany’s most captivating cities. Spend the day exploring at your own pace, whether admiring the magnificent cathedral that dominates the skyline, wandering the charming lanes of the Old Town or browsing the city’s many shops and museums. The city is also famous for its namesake perfume and traditional Kolsch beer, while a stroll across the iconic Hohenzollern Bridge offers wonderful views across the Rhine. This evening, there is time to enjoy dinner at leisure before returning to the hotel.

Cologne, Koblenz & the Mighty Rhine

Where the mighty Rhine meets the Moselle, Koblenz offers some of Germany’s most spectacular river scenery. From the Deutsches Eck, where the Rhine and Moselle meet beneath the impressive Kaiser Wilhelm Monument, our optional two-hour river cruise will take us along a beautiful stretch of the Rhine passing the Electoral Palace of Koblenz, the magnificent Lahneck and Stolzenfels Castles, and St. John’s Monastery at the mouth of the Lahn. Afterwards, enjoy free time at leisure to explore Koblenz’s Old Town, stroll along the riverside or perhaps catch the cable car to soar high above the river to the mighty Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Perched 118 metres above the Rhine and one of Europe’s largest fortresses, this remarkable landmark rewards visitors with breathtaking views across Koblenz and the surrounding river valleys. There’s time to find an early dinner at leisure too, before we return to our hotel.

Cologne, Koblenz & the Mighty Rhine

After breakfast, we check out of the hotel and head to Calais for our journey home on LeShuttle.

Visit Koblenz at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle, centring on the Deutsches Eck beneath the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument. Amble car-free lanes to Jesuitenplatz and Florinsmarkt, trace the river promenade past the Electoral Palace, and soak in the riverside atmosphere from quays and café-lined squares.

With Roman “Confluentes” origins and centuries of wine trade, Koblenz distils Rhine romance into walkable streets and river views. Expect time for independent discoveries—artisan bakeries, half-timbered corners, perhaps the cable car to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (ticket not included)—while the confluence panorama invites photos and reflection.

Cruise a scenic reach of the Rhine from Koblenz, gliding toward Lahnstein past vine-lined banks. Sail by rugged Lahneck Castle and romantic Stolzenfels Castle, and see St. John’s Monastery at the Lahn’s mouth. This is an optional sightseeing cruise on the Rhine at additional cost, bookable on tour.

Absorb the mood of the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley as castle silhouettes crown wooded hills and barges trace broad bends. Two hours on the water reveal fresh perspectives on fortresses, vineyards, and river towns—an evocative complement to exploring on foot.

Explore Cologne’s Old Town beside the Rhine, taking in the twin spires of the Kolner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), the arches of the Hohenzollern Bridge, and waterfront houses. Wander cobbled lanes around Alter Markt and Heumarkt, pausing by Great St. Martin Church and Kolsch beer halls.

Founded as Colonia Agrippina, Cologne layers Roman roots, medieval quarters and modernism. Admire the cathedral’s 1880 facade, browse Museum Ludwig’s precinct, and soak in the riverside atmosphere along the promenade. This city visit focuses on landmark views and time to explore at your own pace.
