Board small expedition boats to land at Gravneset, where a 17th-century whalers’ burial ground and oven ruins rest among polar willow and driftwood. Guides will share stories of the Dutch and English whalers who braved these waters centuries ago.
Returning to the water, cruise beneath tidewater glaciers, listening for the rifle-crack of calving ice and watching for bearded seals hauled out on floes. With luck, walruses may bob among brash ice as Arctic terns stitch the air above. This mix of raw geology and human endeavor brings Svalbard’s layered past into sharp relief.
Liefdefjorden & Monacobreen Small-Boat Glacier Exploration
On day 5, glide into Liefdefjorden and launch the expedition boats to cruise toward Monacobreen’s ice front. The glacier’s blue walls groan and hiss, sending brash ice and growlers sliding past the tubes of Arctic kelp. Keep your camera ready for ivory gulls and seals patrolling the floes.
Guides explain how Monacobreen’s retreat is recorded in striated rock and moraine arcs, linking what you see to a century of exploration and science. Depending on conditions, you may go ashore for a short hike to feel tundra underfoot—its saxifrages and moss campion brightening the gravel with summer bloom.
At-Sea Wildlife Watching & Expert Lecture Programme
On day 6, settle into the rhythm of the ocean and scan the horizon for whales, seabirds and drifting ice from warm indoor lounges or wind-brushed decks. Naturalists help you distinguish fulmars from kittiwakes and spot the tell-tale blows of minke or fin whales.
Between sightings, join engaging talks on Arctic geology, sea ice and wildlife behavior, and contribute to citizen science projects such as seabird counts or cloud observations. The ship becomes a traveling classroom, connecting the stories of explorers and researchers with the seascape sliding past your rail.
Nordvest-Spitsbergen: Smeerenburg Whaling History & Ytre Norskøya Hike
On day 7, come ashore at Smeerenburg on Amsterdamøya, once the bustling heart of Dutch Arctic whaling. Walk among low ruins of blubber ovens and scattered whalebone while guides trace the fortunes of 17th-century fleets and the fragile bounty that drew them north.
Nearby, hike on Ytre Norskøya for vast views across islets and skerries. Along the path, you’ll pass simple grave markers and shingle beaches where eiders nest. The mix of human industry and stark polar landscapes invites you to pause for photos and reflection on the costs and legacies of early Arctic exploitation.
Sailing to the Ice Edge at Phippsøya & Zodiac Cruise Among Floes
On day 8, if conditions allow, the ship will cross the 80th parallel toward Phippsøya and the shifting margin of the polar pack. The bridge team threads a path among drifting floes and new ice, while you watch for walruses sprawled on pans and ivory gulls quartering the leads.
When safe, the crew will lower the expedition boats for a quiet circuit among melt pools and pressure ridges. Guides outline how wind and current chisel the pack, and why this ever-moving ice edge teems with life. It’s an elemental, camera-ready encounter with the high Arctic.
Storøya Walrus Haul-Out & Bråsvellbreen’s Waterfall Front
On day 9, approach Storøya, a favored walrus haul-out where whiskered giants crowd shingle beaches and bergy bits. From a respectful distance, watch them jostle and doze while guides interpret their social behavior and historic comeback after overhunting.
Later, steer along the mile-wide face of Bråsvellbreen, an outflow of the vast Austfonna ice cap. In summer, meltwater cascades down the cliffed front in silvery ribbons—waterfalls plunging into the Greenland Sea amid drifting brash ice. The juxtaposition of warm-season torrents and blue glacial ice is a Svalbard signature scene.
East Svalbard Exploration: Freemansundet, Kapp Lee & Edgeøya Landings
On day 10, in true expedition style, your Captain will seek landings in Freemansundet and at Kapp Lee, gateways to the wilds of Edgeøya. Expect zodiac shuttles and guided hikes across polar desert where reindeer graze, Arctic fox tracks thread the gravel and walruses often loaf near the shore.
Naturalists outline how sea ice funnels wildlife through the sound and why Edgeøya’s raised beaches preserve thousands of years of coastal change. Every landing is dictated by weather, ice and wildlife presence, prioritizing safety while maximizing authentic contact with Svalbard’s east-side solitude.
Negribreen Glacier Front Cruise & Boltodden Shore Walk
On day 11, the ship noses toward the rumbling face of Negribreen, a dynamic tidewater glacier whose calving front is often studded with icebergs and bergy growlers. From the boats, you’ll listen for the deep thunder of seracs giving way and watch black-backed kittiwakes ride the spray.
Conditions permitting, land at Boltodden for a short, guided walk. Here, patterned ground, erratics and hardy plants reveal how permafrost and wind sculpt the landscape. Guides connect the scene to Svalbard’s glacial geology and birdlife while you pause for photos and reflection across Storfjorden.
Gnålodden Trapper’s Hut & Burgerbukta Glacier Bays, Hornsund
On day 12, come ashore at Gnålodden beneath teeming bird cliffs and visit a petite trapper’s hut linked to Wanny Woldstad, Svalbard’s pioneering female hunter. Your guide brings to life overwintering routines—fox traps, seal hunts and the grit required to thrive through months of darkness.
Later, weave by small boat into Burgerbukta, where blue tongues of glacier pour into jade bays. You’ll cruise beneath calving faces and watch kittiwakes pluck zooplankton from milky meltwater. The mix of human stories and glacial drama distills Hornsund’s character.
Bellsund Bird Cliffs & Historic Remains Scenic Cruising
On day 14, enter Bellsund, scanning cliffs busy with auks, guillemots and Northern Fulmars while reindeer graze the tundra below. Guides help you pick out Arctic fox dens and explain how nutrient-rich seabird colonies fertilize the slopes in summer bloom.
As you cruise past early mining sites and trapper stations, learn about Svalbard’s industrial starts and the hardy women and men—like Wanny Woldstad—who etched a life here. The fjord’s gentle light and layered history invite you to pause for photos and reflection before your voyage arcs back toward Isfjorden.
Hornsund Glacier & Mountain Panorama Day
On day 15, explore Hornsund, one of Spitsbergen’s most sculptural fjords, ringed by Hornsundtind’s jagged massif. From deck and by small boat, trace the crevassed faces of glaciers like Hansbreen, listening for the echoing crack of calving and watching for seals porpoising through turquoise meltwater.
Naturalists tie the scene to Svalbard’s geology—layer-cake strata folded by time—and the ocean currents that carry nutrients into this sheltered arm. It’s a day to soak in the fjord’s shifting light, from pewter mornings to silvered afternoons, and to understand why Hornsund is a touchstone for artists and scientists alike.
Sea Kayaking in Arctic Fjords (Conditions Permitting)
On select days between day 5 and day 12, slip into a drysuit and paddle a sea kayak in the shelter of glacier-carved bays. With an experienced guide, you’ll glide quietly among brash ice, hear the soft fizz of melting bergy bits and watch kittiwakes wheel against blue ice walls—a perspective only inches above the waterline.
This small-group experience offers a deeper sense of scale and silence than shipboard viewing. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour with the Expedition Team, subject to weather, ice and availability. Previous paddling experience is helpful but not always required.
Longyearbyen Coal Mine No. 3 Guided Visit
During your Longyearbyen stay (typically on day 2 or the morning of day 4), don a helmet and headlamp to step inside Coal Mine No. 3. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll walk through former galleries, see original drilling gear and learn how miners navigated permafrost, methane and polar night to power Svalbard’s economy.
The tour places today’s colorful town in the context of a gritty past, revealing how coal shaped streets, schools and social life from the 1920s onward. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to local scheduling and availability.
