Additional information
Ny-Ålesund Research Settlement & Krossfjord Zodiac Exploration
Explore the high-latitude science hub of Ny-Ålesund, a former mining town turned international research community. In deference to the nearby geodetic station, you’ll switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth before stepping ashore to see relics of early aviation and the era of Roald Amundsen and the airship Norge.
Afterward, board expedition boats for a Zodiac cruise by tidewater glaciers in Krossfjord and neighboring fjords. Glide past sculpted ice, hear the crack of calving fronts, and watch for seals and wheeling seabirds against a backdrop of serrated peaks.
Raudfjorden Wilderness Landings & Wildlife Watch
Venture by small expedition boats into Raudfjorden’s glacier-lined coves, with opportunities to go ashore to hike across tundra backed by steep, rock-ridge mountains and offshore islets. Your guides help scan the shoreline and floes for walrus, seals, and the compact, pale-coated Svalbard reindeer.
Early in the season there’s a real chance to scout for polar bears from a respectful distance. The Expedition Team interprets tracks, behavior, and sea-ice dynamics that shape life in this protected Arctic realm.
Liefdefjorden Glacier-Front Cruising
Cruise deep into Liefdefjorden, where glacier fronts descend to the sea and drift ice dots teal-green waters. The ship slows to cruise beneath creaking glacier fronts, creating time to frame photographs and watch for seals resting on bergy bits.
Your Expedition Team explains how Svalbard’s geology and climate influence these tidewater glaciers, and how wildlife—from seabirds to Arctic fox—adapts to the seasonal pulse of ice and open water.
Ice Edge Cruising to the 80th Parallel
Set a course toward the edge of the polar ice cap, attempting to cross the 80th parallel if conditions allow. The ship threads between floes in a shifting mosaic of blue-white ice, an otherworldly seascape where light and silence dominate.
When it’s safe, the team may lower our expedition boats for an immersive drift among floating ice. Keep watch for walrus and seals lounging on pans, and learn how winds and currents sculpt this ephemeral boundary.
Hinlopen Strait & Freemansundet Wildlife Safari
Navigate the storied Hinlopen Strait and Freemansundet, gateways to Svalbard’s wild east. Conditions permitting, Zodiacs ferry you beneath bird cliffs alive with Brunnich’s guillemots, while guides scan the ice for walrus haul-outs and the unmistakable silhouette of a polar bear.
Depending on sea ice, the day may focus on Edgeøya or Barentsøya shores, where the Expedition Team interprets geology, seabird ecology, and the food webs that sustain apex predators in this high Arctic corridor.
Hornsund & Bellsund Scenic Fjords
Admire the mountainous amphitheatre of Hornsund, where verdant tundra gives way to serrated peaks and calving glaciers that meet the sea. From the open decks, scan for whales and seals in glassy bays as light plays across snow-streaked summits.
Continue to Bellsund to trace stories of whalers and miners etched into the shoreline. Naturalists weave together pioneer history with today’s wildlife spectacles for a layered sense of place in Svalbard’s south.
Bamsebu Trapper Cabin & Coastal History
Visit the shores near Bamsebu, a historic outpost tied to Svalbard’s trapping era. Weather and ice permitting, land with your guides to explore beaches scattered with driftwood and timeworn artifacts that speak to Arctic trapping heritage.
Hear how seasonal sea ice, migratory wildlife, and isolation shaped life here. This encounter illuminates human resilience and changing ethics in the High North, adding cultural depth to the surrounding fjord scenery.
Guided Tundra Hikes with the Expedition Team
When conditions allow, join a guided hike over the Arctic tundra to read the landscape up close—permafrost polygons underfoot, lichens clinging to rock, and hardy flora shaped by wind and cold. Your guides pace the walk for safe, unhurried exploration.
Along the way, learn fieldcraft for spotting wildlife sign and how to move lightly under AECO guidelines. The experience balances quiet immersion with naturalist insight into life at the margins of ice and sea.
Onboard Lectures & Citizen Science Workshops
Deepen understanding through expert-led lectures on Arctic wildlife, geology, and exploration history. The Expedition Team brings the region to life with stories and science that enrich every landing and sighting.
Contribute observations to citizen science projects tracking climate and sea ice, seabirds, or marine mammals. This collaborative approach turns the ship into a floating classroom, connecting your voyage to ongoing research across Svalbard.
Wildlife Watching from the Open Decks
Join the team on deck to scan the ice edge and fjords with binoculars. Learn how to pick out blows of distant whales, identify seabirds in flight, and recognize walrus haul-outs or seal rests on drifting floes.
Guides share tips for ethical viewing and photography while you pause for photos and reflection. The constant interplay of light, sea, and ice turns the ship’s rails into Svalbard’s best front-row seat.
AECO Beach Clean-Up Participation
Give back to the places you explore by participating in a beach clean-up when conditions allow. Working alongside your guides, remove marine debris from remote shores to support Arctic conservation and wildlife safety.
Learn how currents transport plastics to the High North and why collective action matters. This hands-on effort embodies a leave-no-trace mindset and complements the voyage’s focus on science and stewardship.
Longyearbyen Panoramic Orientation Tour
Join a short panoramic bus tour to get your bearings in Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town. Take in colourful wooden houses, the fjord-scape of Adventfjorden, and landmarks like the Svalbard Church while keeping an eye out for the gentle, short-antlered Svalbard reindeer grazing near town.
Learn how this former coal-mining outpost evolved into a lively Arctic community at 78°N. Your Expedition Team offers context on daily life, wildlife, and safety, with time to pause for photos and reflection amid the delicate Arctic light.
