Your itinerary

Circumnavigating Spitsbergen – In the Realm of the Polar Bear with Extended Stay in Longyearbyen route map

Enjoy time in Oslo before flying to Svalbard: explore Ekebergparken, the Opera House and Munch Museum, floating harbour saunas and Sørenga’s urban beach and New Nordic cuisine, then overnight at an airport hotel.

Morning flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen. Begin two nights in this colourful Arctic frontier town and join a curated two‑day programme of excursions highlighting its history, nature and culture, from coal‑mining roots to today’s science and tourism.

Explore Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s largest settlement and administrative seat on Adventfjord. Visit UNIS and the Svalbard Museum; see mining relics around town. The airport operates year‑round, and most shops, hotels, restaurants and a hospital are within easy walking distance of the port.

Board your expedition ship in Longyearbyen. Meet the Expedition Team, settle into your cabin and set course for the remote High Arctic wilderness and wildlife.

Explore Ny-Ålesund and nearby fjords such as Krossfjord and Kongsfjord. Due to the nearby geodetic station, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are switched off. Learn about Roald Amundsen’s airship Norge and the town’s evolution from mining to a global science hub. Cruise among glaciers and, conditions permitting, use small boats for landings and hikes.

Explore the rugged tundra, steep mountains, glaciers and offshore islands of Raudfjorden. Scout for seals, walrus and reindeer, with an early‑season chance of polar bears. When conditions allow, kayak, take small‑boat cruises, go ashore for hikes or join a beach clean‑up.

Liefdefjorden

If conditions allow, sail north across the 80th parallel to the shifting ice edge. Watch for seals and walruses on the floes and, if feasible, launch small boats for close‑up cruising among the ice. If the ice edge is out of reach, explore Svalbard’s fjords, glaciers and coastal scenery.

If sea ice permits, venture through Hinlopen Strait toward Eastern Spitsbergen, scouting for polar bears, walrus and colonies of Brünnich’s guillemots. Possible visits include Freemansundet and Kapp Lee, or exploring Edgeøya and Barentsøya by Zodiac. If ice blocks passage east, continue in western Svalbard’s deep fjords and calving glaciers, with landings, hikes and kayaking as conditions allow.

Freemansundet

Cruise south to Hornsund’s picturesque fjord of colourful slopes and towering mountains. Watch for auks, guillemots and Northern Fulmars, plus Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, seals and whales. See Mount Hornsundtind and tidewater glaciers, and learn about Wanny Woldstad. Continue to Bellsund to view evidence of historic whaling and mining, with activities determined by weather.

Bamsebu

Disembark in Longyearbyen and fly back to Oslo to conclude your Arctic adventure.

Additional information

Board Zodiacs to launch our small expedition boats into mirror-calm coves of Krossfjord and Kongsfjord. Drift past blue seracs and bergy bits as kittiwakes wheel overhead and waterfalls stripe dark metamorphic cliffs.

Glide close to creaking glacier fronts while guides decode ice textures, moraine lines, and the glaciology shaping these waterways. Pause for photos and reflection amid the sound of popping brash ice and the distant rumble of calving.

Explore Raudfjorden’s islands and headlands on a wildlife-focused outing, scouting for seals, walrus and reindeer along sheltered shores. Early-season voyages keep us on the lookout for polar bears that roam the pack-ice margin.

Conditions permitting, go ashore to hike across tundra threaded with arctic willow and lichens. Guides weave in stories of historic expeditions and relics left by trappers, setting today’s sightings against centuries of human presence in the north.

Sail toward the pack ice to cross the 80th parallel when conditions allow. The ever-changing ice edge is a shifting mosaic of floes, leads, and ghost-blue pressure ridges alive with seal haul-outs and ivory gulls.

From the ship—and sometimes by Zodiac if feasible—guides help identify wildlife and interpret sea-ice dynamics. The chance to lower the expedition boats among silent floes delivers a rare perspective on the Arctic Ocean’s seasonal heartbeat.

Navigate to venture into Hinlopen Strait and the channels of Freemansundet, scanning cliffs and capes for foxes and bears while currents thread past basalt walls.

By Zodiac, approach Brunnich’s guillemot colonies and known walrus haul-outs, listening to wingbeats and surfacing snorts echo across the water. Flexible routing enables Zodiac landings where winds and ice open safe windows for exploration.

Cruise beneath Mount Hornsundtind where glaciers spill from the highlands into glassy fjord water. Scan for fulmars, seals, and distant whale blows as color-washed tundra gives way to serrated ridgelines.

Shore visits in Bellsund reveal evidence of former whaling and mining—boiling-try remnants, rail beds, and rust-red machinery weathering back into the landscape. Guides interpret geology and ice while you admire glaciers reaching into the sea.

Visit Bamsebu, a historic trappers’ cabin on Bellsund’s outer reaches, where driftwood walls and whale-bone relics recall winters of self-reliance.

Learn about Svalbard’s trapper heritage and modern stewardship as guides discuss overwintering traditions and scientific monitoring in the fjord. The stark Arctic silence and wide horizons set a contemplative mood for photography and quiet observation.

Join the team to participate in a beach clean up, collecting marine debris washed onto remote shores. Contribute to citizen science as data are logged to help researchers track sources, currents, and seasonal patterns.

This hands-on effort deepens understanding of ocean systems and helps preserve this fragile ecosystem. Guides brief safe practices around wildlife and surf zones while sharing insights into Arctic plastics pathways and community initiatives across Svalbard.

Meet your Expedition Team for dynamic talks that unpack the Arctic’s wildlife, geology, ice, and human story—from early hunters to modern research stations.

Engaging sessions on polar bears, sea ice, and climate connect the landscapes outside your window to global processes. Discussions of exploration history, including Amundsen’s era, prepare you to read the fjords with informed eyes.

Paddle among brash ice in small guided groups, skimming past sculpted bergy bits and quiet coves for a seal-level view of glacier-carved coasts.

This is an optional adventure at additional cost and bookable on tour. Routes depend on conditions; dry suits and gear are provided, and prior experience helps though is not always required. When seas are calm, the intimacy of kayaking in the High Arctic is unmatched.

Walk into Adventdalen on a guided tundra hike, moving gently across mosses, saxifrages, and permafrost polygons as ptarmigan rustle nearby. Scan for Svalbard reindeer and Arctic fox while your guide interprets tracks, seasonal light, and the silence of wide valleys.

Encounter historic cableway pylons and weathered relics that testify to Longyearbyen’s coal era. Pause for photos and reflection as the valley opens toward glacier tongues and braided rivers, a living lesson in Arctic ecology and resilience.

Visit Ny-Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost settlements, where the nearby geodetic station requires guests to switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Stroll past colorful research stations and quiet harbor quays set against serrated peaks and tide-scored shores.

On a heritage walk, hear how this former mining town became a hub for global climate research. See sites linked to Roald Amundsen’s polar flights and sense the frontier spirit that continues to draw scientists to the High Arctic.

Discover Longyearbyen on a guided orientation walk through colorful streets framed by Adventfjorden and snow-dusted ridges. Trace remnants of coal mining, spot the cableway tower silhouettes, and feel daily life at the edge of the Arctic wilderness where snowmobiles often outnumber cars.

Continue inside the Svalbard Museum to explore exhibits on geology, wildlife, trapping, and exploration. Learn how a mining outpost evolved into a community anchored by UNIS and science, and understand the codes that keep people and polar bears safely apart.
