Christmastime in Stratford-upon-Avon & the Cotswolds

After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and head for home.

On day 1, meet your Tour Director and fellow travellers and raise a welcome glass as you settle into the Royal Court Hotel. Each evening after dinner, unwind with after-dinner tea and coffee and light entertainment arranged by the hotel, creating an easygoing, sociable atmosphere.

Expect a rotating programme of light evening entertainment suited to the season — perhaps trivia, gentle live music or a hosted game — with time to chat and enjoy a free evening at your pace. It’s a relaxed way to connect, swap tips for the next day and enjoy the country-house surroundings between excursions.

Enhance your Boxing Day visit on day 4 and step inside Shakespeare’s Birthplace, the restored 16th-century timber-framed house on Henley Street. Explore timber-framed rooms with period details, see exhibits curated by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and wander the small garden where storytellers often share scenes and sonnets.

Learn about John Shakespeare’s trade, household life and how the town evolved from a guild centre to a literary place of pilgrimage. This is an optional visit at additional cost, bookable on tour and subject to seasonal opening hours. Your Tour Director will advise timings so you can enjoy a free afternoon afterwards to continue exploring the historic streets and festive displays.

On day 4, go behind the scenes at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on a guided tour that reveals how productions are brought to life on the banks of the River Avon. Walk the foyers and, when available, peek into the auditorium, learning about stagecraft, costume displays and props, and the rituals of performance days.

Hear how the 1932 riverside theatre, designed by Elisabeth Scott, was transformed in 2010 to create today’s thrust stage and tower views. This optional experience is at additional cost, bookable on tour, and subject to the RSC’s holiday schedule and limited availability. It adds cultural depth to your visit while leaving time to soak in the riverside atmosphere nearby.

During your Cotswolds day (day 2), opt to visit Broadway Tower, a hilltop folly by James Wyatt with sweeping views across the Cotswold escarpment. Climb the tower’s stairs to survey rolling fields and, on a clear winter’s day, pause for photos that can stretch towards a dozen counties.

Discover the tower’s links to the Arts and Crafts movement and William Morris, and note the Cold War monitoring post tucked into the hillside. This is an optional visit at additional cost, bookable on tour and weather permitting. It offers a bracing dose of fresh air and misty Cotswold vistas before you return to enjoy Broadway’s wide High Street and shops below.

On day 3, settle into a leisurely Christmas at the hotel. Enjoy breakfast and then savour a traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings — roast meats, crisp potatoes, seasonal vegetables and rich gravy — followed by Christmas cake, tea and coffee. Later, a light evening buffet is served so you can graze at your own pace.

Between meals, the hotel hosts festive entertainment, a relaxed way to mark the day in a country-house setting. Your Tour Director is on hand while you enjoy a free afternoon to chat with fellow travellers or take a gentle stroll in the gardens. This unhurried celebration highlights British holiday traditions, from crackers at the table to the comforting aroma of warm spices.

On day 4, arrive in Stratford-upon-Avon where a short orientation helps you get your bearings. Stroll along Henley Street past the exterior of Shakespeare’s Birthplace, continue to the Town Hall and High Street, then make your way to Bancroft Gardens by the River Avon for views of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and Holy Trinity Church. Seasonal lights and window displays set a festive tone.

Learn how a Tudor market town became the playwright’s home and a centre for performance. Then enjoy a free afternoon to browse independent shops, warm up in a café, or soak in the riverside atmosphere. Your Tour Director can point out optional visits and the best spots to pause for photos and reflection before the coach returns.

On day 2, travel by coach into the Cotswolds to explore Stow-on-the-Wold, its market square ringed by honey-coloured stone houses and antique shops. With your Tour Director, join a leisurely village stroll and pause for photos at the yew-framed doorway of St Edward’s Church. Continue to Broadway, famed for its wide High Street lined with picture-perfect cottages, independent boutiques and cosy pubs dressed for the season.

Hear how the medieval wool trade and later turnpike routes fostered handsome coaching inns and prosperous towns. Enjoy free time to browse artisan stores, sample a bakery mince pie, and soak in the winter light across the Cotswold stone before rejoining the coach. The day balances gentle sightseeing with unhurried moments to absorb the scenery and village atmosphere.
