Christmas in Scarborough & Historic York

We visit historic York, where we can wander the narrow cobbled streets with their distinctive overhanging buildings or spend some time in the city’s beautiful Norman Minster, which boasts some of the finest stained-glass windows in the world. Alternatively, why not take a stroll around the city walls that have stood since Roman times and wrap around the city for 2.5 miles or visit the famous Betty’s tea rooms?

On Boxing Day, we explore the enchanting coastal town of Whitby, where sea breezes, twinkling lights and a touch of festive sparkle fill the air. Steeped in maritime heritage and Gothic legend, this charming harbour town inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula and is famed for its beautiful jet jewellery, once adored by Victorian society. Wander the harbour, browse the Christmas stalls and cosy cafés or climb the famous steps to the abbey ruins for sweeping winter views over the North Sea – a magical taste of Yorkshire’s coast at Christmastime.

Browse tucked-away boutiques, sample a warming bite, and climb the 199 steps to St Mary’s churchyard for stirring views of Whitby Abbey silhouetted against the North Sea.

Feel the town’s maritime spirit—home to Captain Cook’s seafaring legacy—and the moody romance that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Seek out traditional jet jewellery, watch gulls wheel over the pier, and capture atmospheric photographs as waves break against the headland.
