Explore Thursday Island on a guided tour of the Torres Strait’s administrative centre. Arrive by ferry from Horn Island and discover an island surrounded by vivid blue water, with a history shaped by its position between mainland Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Learn about the island’s Torres Strait Islander heritage and its role as a meeting place for communities across the region. The journey also offers views over the Great Barrier Reef from the flight to Horn Island.

Take a bauxite mine tour in Weipa to learn how the region’s mineral deposits are extracted. The optional visit offers a closer look at an industry that has shaped the town and its place on western Cape York.

Bauxite is the principal ore used to produce aluminium, making Weipa’s mining landscape relevant far beyond Queensland. Discovering the extraction process adds an industrial perspective to the peninsula’s natural and cultural stories. This tour is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

AAT Kings

Stand at the northern tip of mainland Australia, where the waters of the Torres Strait stretch towards Papua New Guinea. Explore nearby Somerset’s historic remains, including masonry, old cannons and graves associated with pioneer Frank Jardine and his family.

Somerset was established as a colonial outpost in the 1860s, and its surviving traces offer a glimpse of life on this remote peninsula. At palm-fringed Anchorage Beach, take in views across the Albany Passage.

Swim in the clear pools of Fruit Bat Falls, a welcome place to cool off in Cape York’s tropical heat. Spend time wading, splashing or resting beside the falls, with a lunch stop that allows you to linger.

Located near the Old Telegraph Track, this freshwater setting is one of the peninsula’s best-known natural stops. The flowing water and surrounding bushland make the visit as rewarding for a quiet pause as for a refreshing dip.

Visit the historic gold town of Coen in the heart of Cape York Peninsula. Take in the character of this small outback settlement, where traces of the region’s mining past sit alongside the everyday rhythms of remote Queensland.

Gold discoveries brought prospectors to the area in the late 19th century. Coen offers a grounded look at that history, set against the red earth and tropical heat of a town that remains an important stop for peninsula travellers.

Explore Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, weather permitting, and look for birds around its broad, waterlily-covered billabongs. This vast Cape York landscape brings together wetlands, waterways and open country on a scale rarely encountered elsewhere in Queensland.

The park’s rich birdlife makes it a compelling place to slow down and observe the surroundings. Waterbirds and changing wetland scenery offer a vivid introduction to the peninsula’s natural diversity; sightings depend on conditions and the season.

View the dark boulder slopes of Black Mountain while travelling through the country south of Cooktown. This striking formation stands apart from the surrounding greenery and has long attracted stories and speculation.

The route also reaches the historic Lion’s Den Hotel, a long-established gathering place for Cape York travellers. Together, these landmarks reveal two sides of the region: its distinctive geology and the outback stopping places woven into its travel history.

Join a tour of Cooktown to learn how this remote coastal town became significant in Australia’s colonial history. Explore its story as a former gold-rush port and a place closely associated with James Cook’s 1770 voyage.

Cooktown’s history also extends far beyond European arrival, through the enduring culture of the area’s Aboriginal Traditional Owners. The tour places the town’s layered maritime and frontier past within the landscape of Far North Queensland.

Travel the rugged Bloomfield Track by 4WD, weather permitting, through rainforest country between Cooktown and Cape Tribulation. The route crosses the Bloomfield River near Wujal Wujal and offers a close-up sense of the peninsula’s steep, remote terrain.

At Cape Tribulation, the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics rainforest meets the coast beside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This rare proximity of two protected environments gives the journey its distinctive combination of dense greenery and Coral Sea views.

Cruise Weipa’s harbour and the Embley River towards Hay Point, watching for wildlife along the waterways of western Cape York. The optional excursion introduces the animals of this coastal environment and the Indigenous culture connected to the area.

Riverbanks, estuarine waters and wide skies provide a different perspective on the peninsula from its inland 4WD routes. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; wildlife sightings depend on local conditions.
