Additional information

Join an optional game drive through Nairobi National Park aboard an overland truck. Watch for wildlife around the park’s grasslands and waterholes, with Nairobi’s buildings creating an unusual backdrop to the search.

Few capitals have a national park so close to their urban centre. See city and savannah share the skyline while scanning for animals whose movements determine each drive’s sightings. This experience is available at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Trek through Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with local guides and trackers in search of a wild mountain gorilla family. Forest trails can be steep or muddy, and the length of the trek depends on where the gorillas are roaming.

Once located, spend one hour observing the gorillas as they feed, move and interact. Bwindi protects one of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla populations, making this carefully managed encounter a rare glimpse into their forest habitat.

It may be a simple ride through the reserve, but there’s still plenty of opportunity to spot wildlife along the way, with stops made for animal sightings and photos as we journey through Uganda’s famous savannah landscapes.

  • Amboseli: Get that iconic wildlife shot with the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro as a backdrop.

  • Amboseli: Get up early in search of the famous elephants in this iconic Kenyan National Park.

Follow local guides into Kalinzu Forest on a trek in search of wild chimpanzees. Listen for calls overhead and scan the canopy for movement as you walk trails beneath dense tropical foliage.

Chimp sightings depend on the animals’ movements, but the search itself reveals a forest rich in monkeys and birdlife. Watching chimpanzees in the wild, rather than in an enclosure, offers a compelling look at their speed, social behaviour and woodland home.

Travel through Queen Elizabeth National Park on a transit game drive, keeping watch for elephants, buffalo and antelope across its open savannah. Wildlife sightings can prompt stops for a closer look and photographs along the route.

Set against Uganda’s western rift landscapes, the park brings together grassland, crater lakes and distant hills. This is a wildlife-viewing journey through the reserve rather than a dedicated full-day safari, with every sighting shaped by what appears beside the road.

Stand at the Equator near Kikorongo and take a photograph at the marked line dividing the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. It is a brief but distinctive stop amid the landscapes around Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The Equator crosses Uganda on its way around the globe, giving this roadside landmark an unusual geographical appeal. Place a foot in each hemisphere and take in the setting before continuing through the country’s western region.

Search for wildlife in Murchison Falls National Park on a scenic transit drive and a dedicated sunrise safari. Look across the grasslands for giraffes, elephants, antelope and buffalo, with the possibility of seeing lions or other predators.

Uganda’s largest national park stretches around the Nile, creating varied habitat for its wildlife. The early drive brings cooler air and soft light, when animals may be especially active; sightings remain unpredictable and are part of the excitement of safari.

Cruise the Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls, watching the riverbanks for hippos, crocodiles and birds. The boat offers a water-level perspective on the national park and its wildlife.

As the falls draw closer, the broad river meets the dramatic gorge that gives Murchison Falls its name. Approaching the cascade from the river reveals a different side of this landscape from the park’s game drives, with time to observe life along the banks.

Visit the top of Murchison Falls for a close view of the Nile surging through a narrow gap in the rock before plunging into the gorge below. Stop at the viewpoint to take in the spray, sound and force of the water.

The falls form the park’s defining landmark, where a vast river is briefly compressed into a powerful chute. Seeing the Nile from above complements the river cruise’s view from below.

Head into Murchison Falls National Park after dark on a night game drive, scanning the bush for wildlife that may be harder to see in daylight. The experience changes the rhythm of safari, with attention drawn to movement and sounds beyond the vehicle.

Nocturnal sightings are never guaranteed, but darkness offers a fresh perspective on the park’s grasslands and their inhabitants. Explore the reserve at night for a wildlife encounter distinct from its sunrise and daytime drives.

Track rhinos on foot at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary with experienced rangers, observing these powerful animals from a safe distance in the bush. Walking rather than driving brings a different awareness of the landscape and the signs rangers use to locate wildlife.

Ziwa is central to efforts to restore rhinos in Uganda following their disappearance from the country’s wild populations. Hear about the sanctuary’s conservation work while seeing the animals it helps protect.

Visit Mirror of Hope in Nairobi’s Kibera neighbourhood and meet people involved in its work with local women and children. Learn about the initiatives directly from those connected to them, rather than viewing Kibera only from a passing vehicle.

Kibera is a lived-in community with its own networks, challenges and ambitions. Hear local perspectives on the work being done here and the people it supports, in an encounter centred on community voices.

Explore the Maasai Mara National Reserve on game drives across its grassy plains and rolling hills. Search for lions and cheetahs alongside elephants, zebras and other wildlife, with a picnic lunch in the reserve.

The Mara forms part of a wider ecosystem known for its seasonal wildebeest migration. Witnessing the Great Migration may be possible at the right time of year, but its timing and wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. The open terrain makes every drive a chance to observe the savannah at work.

Search Amboseli’s plains for elephants on game drives, including an early outing when the park’s wildlife is on the move. Watch for large-tusked elephants and other animals against the open landscape.

Across the border in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro can rise above the horizon when clouds clear. Photograph wildlife beneath Kilimanjaro if conditions allow: the combination of elephant herds, wide skies and mountain views is what gives Amboseli its distinctive safari setting.

Raft the Nile’s white-water rapids near Jinja for an active morning on one of East Africa’s best-known adventure rivers. Work with your rafting crew as the current carries you through stretches of moving water.

Jinja sits near the Nile’s outlet from Lake Victoria and has become a hub for river adventures. This is the higher-adrenaline choice for travellers who want to experience the Nile from the water. Available at additional cost and bookable on tour; conditions and participation requirements may apply.

Take a relaxed boat cruise to the Source of the Nile near Jinja, where the river begins its long journey north from Lake Victoria. Enjoy a gentler way to spend time on the water while taking in the riverside scenery.

The source has drawn explorers and visitors for generations, giving this calm outing a geographical story as well as a scenic one. It is an alternative to white-water rafting. Available at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Visit the Sheldrick elephant rehabilitation nursery in Nairobi for a chance to watch young elephants play and bathe. Hear about the individual animals and the care involved in their recovery.

The nursery is part of conservation efforts to give orphaned elephants a path towards life beyond its care. Learn their rehabilitation stories while observing the youngsters’ behaviour up close. This optional visit is available at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to availability.

Visit a Maasai village near the Maasai Mara and meet community members who share aspects of their traditions. The visit offers an opportunity to ask questions and learn from the people who live in this region.

Maasai culture is closely associated with the grasslands of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, yet its traditions are part of a living, changing community. Hear local perspectives on Maasai life rather than relying on safari imagery alone. Available at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Add another game drive in the Maasai Mara for more time searching its grasslands for wildlife. An extra outing gives you another opportunity to observe animals whose locations and behaviour change from one drive to the next.

Look across the open plains for big cats, grazing herds and elephants, knowing that no two safaris follow the same sightings. Spend more time in the reserve if wildlife viewing is your priority. Available at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Go white-water rafting in Sagana for an active river experience in central Kenya. Paddle with your group and follow your guide’s instructions as you navigate the current and its rapids.

Sagana’s riverside setting makes water-based adventure a defining part of a stay here. This option suits travellers seeking a hands-on challenge rather than a quiet afternoon beside the water. Available at additional cost and bookable on tour; conditions and participation requirements may apply.

Try rock climbing in Sagana as part of the riverside adventure activities available during your stay. Test your footing, balance and confidence on the rock in an activity focused on movement and problem-solving.

The setting offers a different kind of outdoor challenge from Kenya’s game drives and river excursions. Choose an active experience on land if you would rather climb than take to the water. Available at additional cost and bookable on tour; participation requirements may apply.

Have a go at archery in Sagana, one of the optional activities offered at the riverside base. Take aim and practise a skill that rewards a steady stance, concentration and small adjustments from shot to shot.

Archery offers a measured contrast to Sagana’s faster-paced rafting and ziplining options. Focus on the target at your own pace while enjoying an outdoor activity that does not involve the river. Available at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Try ziplining in Sagana for an aerial adventure at the riverside activity base. Clip in for a ride that swaps the pace of a road trip for a brief rush above the surrounding landscape.

It is one of several activities available here, giving thrill-seekers a way to experience the setting without rafting its waters or climbing rock. See Sagana from a different angle on this optional activity. Available at additional cost and bookable on tour; participation requirements may apply.
