  • Nairobi National Park: Yep – and it’s so worth it. After the Free Time Add-On Nairobi National Park game drive, you’ll have the option to swing by the Sheldrick Elephant Nursery. Note, however, that you’ll need to grab your own ticket in advance directly from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust website. This costs around $20 USD.
  • Maasai Mara National Reserve: Hot air balloon rides may be available in the Maasai Marai through independent local operators. While floating over the savannah sounds pretty iconic, this isn’t an activity Contiki promotes, sells or books, as local provider insurance does not meet our required standards. If you’d like to take a hot air balloon ride, you’re free to arrange and pay directly with a local operator while on tour. This is completely independent of Contiki and follows the operator’s own terms, safety standards and insurance cover.
  • Amboseli: Premium camping is classic camping, levelled up. Our road crew will set up these tents for you – all with premium facilities like chill-out zones, communal bathrooms and all the creature comforts.
  • Amboseli: Nope, you’re all good! All equipment (tents, sleeping bags, etc) will be provided for you.
  • Amboseli: You don’t have to. Your road crew will set up camp, cook meals, and clean up afterwards – but you’re always welcome to help!
  • Amboseli: You’ll have access to proper bathrooms with real toilets, hot showers and everything you need – just shared with the crew.
  • Nairobi: Meet the dedicated team and see for yourself the work being done to help the women and children who live here in the Kibera slum.

  • Maasai Mara National Reserve: Known for its grassy plains and rolling hills, home to lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos, the Maasai Mara is a jewel in Africa’s wildlife crown, so don’t miss your chance to explore it from sunrise to the afternoon, with a picnic lunch in the wild.
  • Amboseli: Get that iconic wildlife shot with the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro as a backdrop.

  • Amboseli: Get up early in search of the famous elephants in this iconic Kenyan National Park.

Visit Mirror of Hope in Nairobi’s Kibera neighbourhood and meet the team working with women and children in the community. Hear about their work directly from the people involved and gain a more personal perspective on life in the Kenyan capital.

This hosted visit offers a meaningful connection beyond the city’s familiar safari gateway. It centres the knowledge and efforts of local residents, giving you time to listen, ask questions and learn about the organisation’s work.

Explore the Maasai Mara National Reserve on game drives across its open grasslands and rolling hills. Watch for lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos, with a picnic lunch in the wild offering a chance to take in the landscape between wildlife sightings.

The reserve forms part of the wider Mara–Serengeti ecosystem. At certain times of year, you may also encounter the Great Migration, though animal movements and sightings can never be guaranteed.

Search for wildlife on game drives through Amboseli, including an early outing when the plains are coming to life. Look for the park’s celebrated elephants, among them the exceptionally large-tusked animals sometimes seen in this landscape.

Amboseli is known for views towards Mount Kilimanjaro rising beyond the savannah. Clear skies may give you the chance to photograph elephants against its distant peak, while the changing light and wildlife activity make each drive a distinct experience.

Take an optional game drive through Nairobi National Park aboard an overland truck. Scan the grasslands and waterholes for wildlife, with the capital’s skyline creating an unusual backdrop to the safari landscape.

Protected on the edge of Nairobi, the park brings wild habitat remarkably close to the city. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; wildlife sightings vary with conditions and the movement of animals.

Visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant nursery in Nairobi to watch young elephants play and bathe while learning about their rescue and rehabilitation. The visit offers a close look at the care involved in raising orphaned elephants.

The Trust’s work provides context for the conservation challenges facing Kenya’s elephants. This optional visit is at additional cost and requires a ticket purchased in advance directly from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust; it is not bookable on tour.

Visit a Maasai village near the Maasai Mara for an opportunity to meet community members and learn about their traditions. The experience adds a human perspective to a region often viewed chiefly through its wildlife.

The Maasai have long maintained close connections to the lands surrounding the reserve, while contemporary community life is varied and evolving. This optional cultural visit is at additional cost and bookable on tour.

Opt for another game drive in the Maasai Mara to spend more time searching its grasslands for wildlife. A further outing offers fresh chances to spot big cats and other animals that may have remained out of sight on earlier drives.

Wildlife moves freely through the reserve, so no two drives reveal quite the same scene. This extra excursion is at additional cost and bookable on tour; sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Join a white-water rafting adventure in Sagana, where the river provides a hands-on way to experience the area’s outdoor landscape. Work together on the raft and feel the shift between moving water and calmer stretches.

Sagana is a centre for adventure activities in central Kenya, offering a different pace from the tour’s wildlife drives. Rafting is at additional cost and bookable on tour; participation depends on local conditions and operator requirements.

Try rock climbing in Sagana for a physical challenge away from the safari vehicle. Focus on your footing and handholds as you tackle a climb in this central Kenyan adventure hub.

Climbing offers a more active way to engage with Sagana’s outdoor setting, with the satisfaction coming from each carefully judged move. This optional activity is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to local availability and operator requirements.

Take aim during an archery session in Sagana. Practise your stance, focus on the target and test your accuracy in an outdoor activity that rewards patience as much as a steady hand.

Among Sagana’s more energetic adventure options, archery offers a change of pace while still inviting a little friendly competition. This optional experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to local availability.

Choose a zip-lining experience in Sagana for a burst of speed and an elevated perspective on the outdoor setting. The ride turns a moment of anticipation at the launch point into a swift passage through the air.

It is one of several adventure activities available at this central Kenyan stop, offering a contrast to time spent watching wildlife on safari. Zip-lining is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to local availability and operator requirements.

Get active with mountain biking during your Kenya adventure, an opportunity highlighted alongside the tour’s rafting and zip-lining options. Travelling on two wheels brings you closer to the terrain and lets you experience the landscape at your own pace.

The supplied itinerary does not specify a route or confirm which location offers this activity, so details should be checked with the tour team. Mountain biking is at additional cost and bookable on tour if available.
